To track real-world flights on a map, open a web-based or mobile flight tracker, search by flight number, registration, callsign, airport or route, then select the aircraft. The map normally shows its position, track, altitude, groundspeed and estimated arrival, although coverage, privacy restrictions and data delays can hide or misplace flights.
How to find a flight on a live map
- Start with the operating flight number. Enter the airline designator and number without relying solely on the codeshare number printed on a booking. Several airlines may sell seats on the same flight, but only the operating carrier supplies the aircraft.
- Select the correct date and sector. Flight numbers are reused, sometimes more than once per day. Confirm the departure airport, destination and scheduled time before opening the map.
- Try another identifier. If the flight number fails, search by aircraft registration, transmitted callsign, airport or city pair. An airport view is especially useful once the aircraft is airborne but its route information is incomplete.
- Check the data timestamp. A moving symbol may be a received position, an interpolated estimate or the final known position. Look for labels indicating the source, update age or estimated coverage.
- Open the flight details. Confirm the aircraft type, registration, altitude and origin before assuming you have found the right flight.

How do flight-tracking maps locate aircraft?
Most tracked positions come from ADS-B, through which an aircraft broadcasts its GPS-derived position and other data to ground receivers or satellites. Trackers may also use multilateration, Mode S data, radar-derived feeds and airline schedule information.
Receiver coverage is strongest around populated areas and major airports. Over oceans, mountains and sparsely served regions, a tracker may depend on satellite reception, show fewer updates or estimate the aircraft's progress between known points. Different maps can therefore show the same flight differently.
What information does a live flight map show?
A flight map can show the aircraft's recent track, altitude, groundspeed, heading, registration, type, origin, destination and estimated arrival. Some details are measurements; others are database matches or calculations.
- Groundspeed is not airspeed: wind can make the displayed speed substantially higher or lower than the aircraft's indicated airspeed.
- Displayed altitude may be pressure altitude: it should not be treated as exact height above the terrain.
- The route label is not necessarily the filed route: it may come from a schedule database rather than the aircraft itself.
- The drawn line is sampled: gaps and straight connecting segments do not prove that the aircraft flew precisely along that line.
Why is a real-world flight missing from the map?
A missing aircraft does not necessarily mean the flight was cancelled. The usual causes are weak receiver coverage, an incorrect identifier, a codeshare mismatch, a delayed departure or restrictions applied to the aircraft's public data.
- The aircraft may not yet be transmitting usable airborne position data.
- Low-altitude reception can be blocked by terrain, buildings or distance from a receiver.
- Private, government and military aircraft may be filtered or shown with limited details.
- The callsign may have been entered incorrectly or associated with the wrong route.
- An aircraft substitution may make a previously noted registration invalid.
- The map may be displaying an estimated position after reception was lost.
For cancellation, gate and boarding information, use the operating airline or airport's official status information rather than treating the map as the final authority. A tracking map describes observed or estimated movement; it is not the airline's operational record.
How accurate is live flight tracking?
Flight tracking is usually accurate enough to follow an aircraft's broad progress, but it is not guaranteed to be instantaneous or complete. Updates may arrive within seconds under good coverage, while remote segments can be delayed, interpolated or absent.
Do not use a public flight map for separation, navigation, emergency decisions or an exact airport pickup time. Arrival estimates can change with winds, routing, holding, runway assignment and taxi time. Can tracked flights be used for flight simulation or spotting?
Yes. A completed track can provide a convincing aircraft, city pair, departure time and flown path for a simulator session.
