Train not moving in Train Sim World? Check cab activation, brakes, doors, safety systems and traction power with this ordered fault-finding fix.
In Train Sim World, a train usually will not move because the cab is not activated, a brake remains applied, the doors are unlocked, or the locomotive has no traction power. Put the power handle to off, establish the correct driving direction, release every brake, wait for brake pressure to recover, then apply power gently.
What should I check first when a Train Sim World train will not move?
Work through the controls in order rather than repeatedly moving the throttle. The exact labels vary between locomotives, but this sequence covers most diesel, electric and multiple-unit trains.
- Cancel the power demand: place the throttle, regulator or combined power handle fully in its off or idle position. Some traction interlocks will not reset while power is demanded.
- Activate the driving cab: insert or turn the master key where fitted, cut in the driver's controls and select forward or reverse. Only the cab being driven should be active; shut down the cab at the other end.
- Close the doors: close the correct side and wait for the door interlock indication. Many passenger trains block traction while any door remains released or unlocked.
- Establish traction power: start the diesel engine, or raise the pantograph and close the main circuit breaker on an overhead electric locomotive. Dual-mode stock may also require the correct power source.
- Release every brake: check the train brake, locomotive or direct brake, parking brake and any handbrakes on coupled vehicles. A locomotive brake can remain applied even when the train brake says
Release. - Wait for the brake system: after changing ends, coupling vehicles or recovering from an emergency application, allow the brake pipe and reservoirs to recharge. Watch the gauges rather than assuming the brakes release instantly.
- Apply a low power setting: use the first notch or a small power demand. If the train is on a gradient, increase power progressively and use sand if the wheels begin slipping.
A mistake we see constantly is applying full power while an interlock is active. That does not clear the fault and may produce wheel slip as soon as the brakes release. How can I tell what is blocking the train?
The brake and tractive-effort indications usually separate a power problem from a brake problem.

Why are the brakes stuck on?
Brakes that will not release usually indicate an inactive cab, incomplete recharge or a safety-system penalty. On air-braked stock, the brake pipe normally charges while brake-cylinder pressure falls towards its released value; vacuum-braked stock instead releases as vacuum increases.
If AWS, TPWS, PZB, SIFA, an alerter or another fitted system has triggered an emergency application, return the power controller to off and acknowledge or reset the warning. Some trains require the brake handle to be moved through a reset or emergency position before it can be released. Then wait for the brake system to recharge.
The driver's brake controls may also need to be cut in after changing cabs. Avoid moving brake isolation cocks unless the locomotive's tutorial specifically requires it: putting one in the wrong position can leave the consist without a controllable brake pipe.
Why does the locomotive have no traction power?
The required power setup depends on the type of train, so use the absence of tractive effort as the clue.
Electric trains
Check the battery or control power, pantograph, main circuit breaker and selected electrical supply. The throttle must normally be off before the breaker will close. A train stopped in a neutral or dead section cannot draw normal traction current until it reaches an energised section or the route-specific recovery procedure is followed.
Diesel trains
Confirm that the engine is running and that any generator field, transmission or engine-run control modelled in the cab is enabled. Engine sound alone does not prove that the transmission is supplying traction.
Steam locomotives
Check boiler pressure, reverser position, regulator, locomotive brake and tender handbrake. Use a modest regulator opening and suitable cut-off; excessive regulator on a standing start can cause wheel slip without useful movement.
Could a controller or keyboard binding be causing it?
If a cab lever moves and then snaps back, another assigned input may be overriding it. Temporarily disconnect extra controllers or RailDriver hardware, then operate the control with the mouse or keyboard. Our Train Sim World control reference for keyboard users lists the common driving inputs.
Also check that the physical control reaches its actual detent. A combined handle that appears close to off may still be commanding minimum power or braking, preventing the reverser, breaker or safety reset from responding.
Why will a Free Roam train not move?
A spawned Free Roam train still needs a valid path and normal cab preparation. Set a destination so the dispatcher can route the train, activate the leading cab, establish power and inspect any newly coupled vehicles for applied handbrakes.
A red signal should not be passed simply because the train can produce power. If the route has not cleared, correct the path or wait for authority; our Free Roam train spawning and pathing instructions explain that process.
When should I restart the service?
Restart only after the controls, brake gauges and power source have been checked. In a training module, return the requested control to its starting detent and repeat the instruction slowly; moving several controls ahead of the prompt can prevent the objective from registering.
If the correct cab is active, the doors are locked, all brakes indicate release, traction power is available and no effort appears, restarting the service is reasonable. On the next attempt, complete the locomotive's preparation in the displayed order and pause long enough for pressure, electrical contactors and door interlocks to respond.
