Why aren't throttle or brakes working in Train Sim World?

In Train Sim World, unresponsive throttle or brakes usually mean either the input is not reaching the simulator or the train is blocking it through a cab, reverser, door, brake or safety-system interlock. Check whether the cab handle or HUD indicator moves first; that separates binding faults from train-setup faults.

Does the cab control move when you press the input?

A moving handle or HUD indicator means the command has been recognised, even if the train does not respond. If nothing moves, concentrate on bindings, controller conflicts and whether that particular cab control is locked.

How do you restore throttle and brake control?

The safest fix is to return the train to a neutral state, activate the correct cab and clear each interlock in order.

  1. Return the power control to off. Many trains will not accept traction after an interlock until the throttle or combined handle has first been returned to its off or neutral position.
  2. Activate the driving cab. Insert or turn the master key, enable the desk or control switch, and make sure the cab at the opposite end has not been left active. The exact controls vary by train.
  3. Select a direction. Move the reverser from neutral only after the cab is active. Some reversers or brake handles remain mechanically locked until a key is inserted or another control is in the correct position.
  4. Close the doors and release parking controls. Door interlocks suppress traction on most passenger trains. Check the parking brake, handbrake and any locomotive-specific holding brake as well.
  5. Release the correct brake. Put the automatic or train brake in release, release the independent locomotive brake where applicable, and allow time for the brake pipe and reservoirs to recharge.
  6. Clear any emergency application. Reset the emergency control or safety-system penalty using the procedure for that train. Keep the throttle off while doing so.
  7. Test one input method. Use the mouse directly on the cab handle, then try the keyboard, followed by the controller. This reveals which layer is failing.

Do not start moving brake cut-out valves, isolation switches or circuit breakers at random. Scenarios and timetable services normally spawn with those systems correctly configured, and changing them can create a second fault that is harder to diagnose.

Why does the throttle move but the train still has no power?

If the throttle moves but tractive effort remains at zero, Train Sim World is receiving the input and the train is withholding power. The usual causes are:

  • The reverser is in neutral or the master key is not active.
  • Passenger or guard-operated doors are still open.
  • Brake-cylinder pressure remains applied even though the handle says release.
  • The parking brake or handbrake is on.
  • A safety system has made a penalty or emergency brake application.
  • The Driver's Reminder Appliance is set on a UK train.
  • AFB or another speed-control system is enabled with its target set to zero.
  • The throttle was not returned to off after an interlock cleared.

Why won't the brakes release?

Brakes that remain applied usually indicate a latched emergency or safety penalty, a parking brake, or an air system that has not finished recharging. Set power to off, reset the triggering system, select brake release and watch the brake-cylinder or brake-pipe gauges where fitted.

Long or freight consists do not release instantaneously. Air must propagate through the train, so applying power while cylinder pressure remains high will not help. On multiple units, door interlocks or a cab-change procedure can also hold the brakes.

Why do the brake controls move without slowing the train?

A responsive brake handle may still be commanding the wrong braking system or one that is ineffective in the present conditions. An independent brake acts mainly on the locomotive, while the automatic or train brake controls the whole consist.

Dynamic or electric braking can be weak or unavailable at very low speed, and some locomotives blend it with the air brake automatically. A long train also takes time to react after a brake-pipe reduction. Watch the gauges and the HUD braking indication rather than relying only on the handle position.

If no pressure or braking indication changes at all, return the handle to release and apply it again through a normal service range. Persistent failure in only one service can indicate a saved-state or scenario problem; restarting that service is preferable to altering isolation equipment.

How do you fix a controller or keyboard conflict?

Input conflicts are most likely when the cab controls twitch, reverse direction or jump back after you move them.

  • Disconnect unused controllers, throttles and steering devices, then test with one device attached.
  • Restore the affected control profile to its defaults if custom bindings are suspect.
  • Check that the same axis is not assigned to both power and braking.
  • Add a small dead zone if an analogue lever sends constant input near its centre or idle position.
  • On PC, test Steam Input both enabled and disabled for that controller rather than stacking it over a second custom mapping.
  • Make sure the game window has focus and that no menu, camera mode or overlay is capturing the command.

A physical axis can repeatedly overwrite keyboard or mouse commands, making a working cab handle appear to snap back. Disconnecting that device is the quickest way to confirm the cause.
