Can you use a joystick and throttle with Train Simulator Classic?

Train Simulator Classic does not provide universal native support for generic flight joysticks or HOTAS throttles. You can still use one by mapping its buttons and axis zones to keyboard commands with controller software, but it will normally behave as digital key presses rather than a fully synchronised analogue train controller.

Does Train Simulator Classic detect HOTAS controls?

Not as native train-control axes. Train Simulator Classic has no universal binding system that lets every DirectInput flight stick or throttle control the regulator, reverser and brakes as absolute analogue levers.

How do I map a joystick or throttle to Train Simulator Classic?

The dependable workaround is to translate HOTAS inputs into the same incremental commands used by the keyboard.

  1. Check the hardware in Windows. Confirm that every button registers, each axis reaches its full range and no axis jitters while untouched.
  2. Choose the commands. Start with power increase and decrease, train brake application and release, reverser, horn and any required safety-system acknowledgement. Use our reference for Train Simulator Classic keyboard commands rather than guessing the bindings.
  3. Create a simulator-specific profile. Use the joystick manufacturer's configuration utility or an input remapper to convert each button into the relevant keystroke. Avoid changing the device's global profile, which could affect other simulators.
  4. Configure axes cautiously. If the software supports axis bands, assign one direction to repeated increase commands and the opposite direction to repeated decrease commands. Add a central dead zone so a spring-centred stick sends nothing when released.
  5. Test with the HUD visible. Begin with a straightforward locomotive and watch the displayed regulator and brake values. Reduce the key-repeat rate if a small movement sends a control straight to its limit.
  6. Save separate profiles where needed. Combined power-and-brake handles, notched controllers and scripted locomotives may need different mappings.

For many users, buttons or a hat switch are more predictable than a throttle axis. A button press gives a controlled increment; a non-spring-centred flight throttle may keep issuing commands merely because it remains inside an active axis band.

Why does the throttle go out of sync with the cab lever?

A keyboard-mapped throttle can lose alignment because Train Simulator Classic receives relative increase and decrease commands, not the HOTAS lever's absolute position.

For example, moving the cab regulator with the mouse does not update the physical HOTAS position. Changing locomotives, opening a scenario with power already applied or encountering a scripted combined handle can cause the same mismatch.

  • Lever races to maximum: lower the repeat rate or use wider axis bands.
  • Control keeps moving after release: enlarge the dead zone and check that the mapper sends a key-release event.
  • Direction is reversed: invert the axis or swap the increase and decrease assignments.
  • Inputs appear twice: disable duplicate profiles or other controller layers that are sending the same key.
  • Physical and on-screen positions disagree: return the simulated control to a known limit, then move it using only the mapped controller.

Will one joystick profile work with every locomotive?

No single joystick profile is guaranteed to work correctly with every Train Simulator Classic locomotive. Standard controls usually accept the expected keyboard commands, while advanced add-ons may use scripted notches, separate brake systems or combined power-and-brake handles.

Build a basic profile first, then duplicate and adjust it for unusual locomotives. Test braking from low speed before beginning a full scenario; an incorrect brake mapping is much harder to diagnose once the train is moving quickly.
