Train Simulator Classic does not have a native macOS version. You can run it on an Intel Mac by installing Windows through Boot Camp, or try Windows virtualisation or a Wine-based compatibility layer. Rosetta 2 by itself cannot run Train Simulator Classic. Rosetta translates Intel macOS applications, whereas Train Simulator Classic is a Windows application.
How do you install Train Simulator Classic on an Intel Mac?
On a compatible Intel Mac, install a supported copy of Windows with Boot Camp and then treat the machine like a normal Windows PC.
- Confirm the processor: open About This Mac. Models showing an Intel processor can use Boot Camp; models showing an Apple chip cannot.
- Check performance and capacity: compare the Mac against the game's Windows hardware and storage requirements. Leave substantial extra space for routes, rolling stock and temporary files.
- Install Windows: use Boot Camp Assistant and install the Apple hardware drivers. The Windows release must be supported by both the Mac model and Train Simulator Classic.
- Install the base game: use its official Windows game client, then follow our clean PC setup and first-run checks.
- Test before adding content: run a supplied route and scenario first. Add DLC and third-party content only after the unmodified game works.
A mistake we see constantly is making the Boot Camp partition only large enough for the base installation. Train Simulator Classic libraries grow quickly, while resizing a Boot Camp partition later is awkward. If the Mac supports only an end-of-support Windows release, consider the security implications before using that installation online.
Can Apple silicon Macs run Train Simulator Classic?
Train Simulator Classic can sometimes run on Apple silicon through a Windows ARM virtual machine, but this is an unsupported compatibility chain rather than a dependable Mac version.
The Mac runs ARM Windows, Windows translates the game's Intel code, and the virtual machine translates DirectX calls for the Mac GPU. A fault at any stage can produce a black screen, missing textures, launcher crashes or poor frame rates even when the Mac appears powerful enough.
- Keep the virtual disk on a fast SSD and leave free space for route installation and shader data.
- Do not assign every processor core or all available memory to the virtual machine; macOS still needs resources.
- Install the base game and its supplied prerequisites in the same virtual Windows environment before trying add-ons.

DLC installed by the Windows game client has the best chance of working, while manual add-ons and specialist controls introduce extra compatibility risks.

- Controllers: keyboards and ordinary gamepads are the least troublesome. RailDriver and other specialist controls depend on Windows drivers and USB access, making Boot Camp more reliable than virtualisation or Wine.
Is a Mac a practical choice for Train Simulator Classic?
An Intel Mac with a secure, supported Boot Camp installation can be practical. An Apple silicon Mac is suitable only if you accept experimentation, reduced performance and possible add-on failures. If Train Simulator Classic is a main reason for buying hardware, a Windows PC remains the safer and more compatible choice.
