What is the DRA in Train Sim World and how do you use it?

The Driver Reminder Appliance (DRA), also called the Driver’s Reminder Appliance, is a manually operated UK cab safety device in Train Sim World. Set it while stopped when you must not take power. Its red indication reminds you of the restriction and inhibits traction until deliberately reset; it does not apply the brakes.

What does the DRA do in Train Sim World?

The DRA prevents traction power being applied while set, guarding against an accidental start past a signal at danger. It is a reminder and traction interlock, not a system that reads signal aspects or controls the train automatically.

Both setting and resetting are manual. A signal changing to a proceed aspect does not release the DRA, and operating it does not make a service or emergency brake application. It appears primarily on fitted British rolling stock; its position and exact control design vary between trains and add-ons.

When and how should you use the DRA?

In straightforward Train Sim World operation, set the DRA after stopping at a signal displaying danger. UK operating procedures can also require it during certain station stops following a restrictive aspect, so follow the train’s tutorial or documented procedure rather than setting it at every station.

1. Stop and secure the train. Stop short of the signal, apply sufficient brake and confirm that the train is stationary.
2. Set the DRA. Operate the red DRA switch or button in the active cab. Confirm that its red indicator is illuminated.
3. Keep it set. Leave the DRA on while the signal remains at danger or you otherwise lack authority to move. An open timetable departure window does not override a red signal.
4. Confirm authority to proceed. Check for a valid proceed aspect or explicit authority to pass the signal, and complete normal departure checks such as closing the doors.
5. Reset the DRA. Move the control to its reset or off position and confirm that the red indication extinguishes. You can then release the brakes and apply power normally.

The dependable method is to operate the physical cab control with the mouse or controller interaction mode. Do not assume the AWS acknowledgement key will reset the DRA—they are separate controls.

Why is there no power after the signal clears?

If the signal has cleared but the train will not take power, check the DRA indicator first. A red DRA light means the traction interlock is still active, even if the route ahead is now clear.

• DRA light still illuminated: operate the switch to reset or off and verify that the indication goes out.
• DRA reset but no traction: check that the correct cab is active, the reverser is in direction, the doors are closed and all service, emergency and parking brakes are released.
• Safety-system brake demand present: complete the AWS or TPWS acknowledgement and release procedure. Cycling the DRA will not cancel a separate brake demand.

Do not reset the DRA against a red signal merely to test whether traction returns. The resulting power availability is exactly what the appliance is intended to prevent.

Is the DRA the same as AWS or TPWS?

No. The DRA is a manual reminder and traction interlock, whereas AWS and TPWS react to trackside safety conditions and can initiate a brake demand.

A mistake we see constantly is acknowledging an AWS warning and expecting the red DRA indication to disappear. It will not: each device must be handled separately.
