Why are the joystick rudder and flight sim pedals fighting each other?

Does right rudder require left stick?

No, there is no general “right rudder, left stick” rule; once pedals own the rudder axis, left-and-right stick movement should control ailerons rather than yaw.

Pushing the right pedal forward should command right rudder and yaw the aircraft’s nose to the right. The left pedal moving backwards at the same time is normal because the two pedals are mechanically linked. If the simulator’s control indicator or aircraft nose moves left instead, reverse the rudder axis.

During the initial entry into a normal coordinated right turn, right aileron and enough right rudder are commonly used together. Opposite stick and rudder can be correct in a sideslip or crosswind landing, so control technique depends on the manoeuvre rather than a fixed pairing. What if my rudder pedals do nothing?

If rudder pedals do nothing, first establish whether the operating system can see their movement; that separates a USB or hardware problem from a simulator binding problem.

The same diagnosis applies when the symptom is described simply as doet ook niks, meaning “does nothing”. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Test outside the simulator: Open the operating system’s controller panel or the manufacturer’s utility. If no axis moves there, reconnect the cable, check any proprietary connection and try a direct USB port.
  2. Restart after connecting: Some simulators do not add a controller reliably when it is plugged in after launch.
  3. Inspect the correct device profile: Select the pedals rather than the joystick and check both assigned and unassigned controls. A blank pedal profile will not inherit the joystick’s mappings.
  4. Bind the analogue axis: Move the linked pedal mechanism and assign the detected input to Rudder Axis, not rudder-left and rudder-right buttons.
  5. Disable conflicts temporarily: Clear other rudder axes and turn off autorudder or simplified piloting assistance while testing.
  6. Use a valid test: At a standstill, watch the cockpit input indicator or external rudder surface. Aerodynamic rudder may not turn a stationary aircraft, and some aircraft use separate nosewheel or tiller steering.

If the pedals move correctly in the operating system but not in the simulator, the fault is almost always the selected profile, assignment or assistance configuration. If they fail outside the simulator as well, concentrate on the connection, driver or hardware rather than repeatedly changing in-sim sensitivity.
