Yes. In most PC flight simulators, you can use a joystick and separate rudder pedals at the same time, even from different manufacturers. Assign pitch and roll to the joystick, rudder and toe brakes to the pedals, then remove any duplicate rudder binding from the joystick’s twist axis.

How do I set up a joystick and rudder pedals together?

Connect both devices, give each flight axis one owner, and save the resulting control profile.

  1. Connect both controllers: Plug the joystick and pedals into their own USB ports, unless the pedals are designed to connect through a matching joystick, yoke or throttle base. Connect them before starting the simulator so it can identify both devices.
  2. Check device detection: Confirm that the operating system and simulator list the joystick and pedals separately. Use the manufacturer’s configuration utility when one is supplied; otherwise use the operating system’s controller panel to check movement and centring.
  3. Assign the joystick axes: Bind the joystick’s horizontal movement to Ailerons Axis and vertical movement to Elevator Axis. Bind its throttle slider separately if it has one.
  4. Assign the pedal axes: Bind pedal movement to the analogue Rudder Axis. If the pedals include toe brakes, bind them to separate left- and right-brake axes. Avoid digital commands such as Rudder Left and Rudder Right; they produce on-or-off input rather than proportional pedal movement.   5. Remove duplicate assignments: Clear the rudder binding from the joystick’s twist axis and check that no throttle, gamepad or other controller is also assigned to rudder.
  6. Test and calibrate: Check full left and right travel, a stable centre position and both toe brakes. Reverse an axis if the on-screen control moves in the wrong direction, then add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement.

Can the joystick and pedals be different brands?

Yes, different brands normally work together on a PC when both controllers have independent USB connections and the simulator recognises them.

If either controller disconnects intermittently, test it directly in a computer USB port before blaming the simulator. Unpowered hubs, loose cables and power-saving settings can cause devices to disappear or return under a different controller profile.

Why are the joystick and rudder pedals fighting each other?

The usual cause is two physical controls being assigned to the same rudder axis.

  • The joystick twist and pedals are both bound to Rudder Axis.
  • A gamepad, throttle rotary or another connected controller has retained a default rudder assignment.
  • Toe brakes have been mistaken for the rudder axis, or their direction is reversed.
  • Autorudder or another piloting assistance feature is altering the commanded rudder.
  • An uncalibrated or noisy axis is producing input near its centre position.

Should I disable the joystick twist axis?

Yes, if the pedals are controlling rudder, remove the twist axis from the rudder assignment. You may physically lock the twist mechanism when the joystick supports it, or leave twist available for a different function that cannot conflict with the pedals.

After setup, moving the stick should affect only pitch and roll, while pressing the pedals should move the rudder smoothly left and right. Ground steering can vary by aircraft because some models link the pedals to a nosewheel or tailwheel, while others use a separate tiller or steering axis.
