Learn how VATSIM model-matching liveries work in MSFS 2024, how vPilot selects aircraft, and how to fix white, wrong or missing models.
In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, VATSIM model-matching liveries are local aircraft models and textures selected by vPilot. vPilot reads another pilot’s aircraft type and callsign, applies VMR rules, then displays the closest installed model and airline paint. Nothing is streamed from VATSIM, and other pilots may see a different livery.
What decides which VATSIM livery appears?
The visible aircraft is chosen from VATSIM data, your vPilot rules and the models installed on your own PC. Four components are involved:

| Local model package | This contains the geometry, textures, animations and levels of detail that MSFS 2024 actually renders. |
For example, a rule can match an A320 using a particular airline prefix and point ModelName to that airline’s locally installed A320 model. The VMR file contains selection instructions only; it does not contain or download the aircraft and textures.
If no exact airline-and-type combination exists, vPilot falls back to another suitable installed model. Depending on the available library and rules, that might be the correct aircraft in generic colours, another operator’s paint or a related aircraft type. General aviation, military, charter and unusual callsigns are more likely to reach a fallback.
How do I install model-matching liveries in MSFS 2024?
A reliable installation needs a compatible model package, all required textures and an enabled VMR rule set.
- Use the PC edition. vPilot is a Windows pilot client, so this model-matching method does not work on the Xbox or PlayStation editions of MSFS 2024. Our guide to VATSIM platform support in Microsoft Flight Simulator explains that limitation.
- Install an MSFS 2024-compatible model package. Put each complete package in the active
Communitydirectory. The package folder containing files such asmanifest.jsonandlayout.jsonmust not be buried inside unnecessary wrapper folders. See our advice on checking livery folders and aircraft compatibility if the repaint does not appear. - Check the dependencies. Many downloads are texture repaints, not complete aircraft. They require the exact base AI model named by the author; owning a different version of the same aircraft type is not enough.
- Enable the supplied VMR files in vPilot. Add them to vPilot’s custom model-matching rule sets and retain the recommended priority. A broad generic rule placed ahead of more specific airline rules can produce the wrong paint.
- Restart and verify. Restart MSFS 2024 and vPilot after changing model packages, then check vPilot’s model-matching output for referenced model names that cannot be found. A missing model indicates an installation, dependency or compatibility problem rather than a VATSIM connection fault.

Dedicated traffic models versus normal liveries
Dedicated low-polygon traffic models are normally the best choice because they are built to display many aircraft with suitable exterior animations and levels of detail. They usually place a much smaller load on the simulator than complex flyable add-ons.
An ordinary aircraft livery can work only when its underlying model can be injected as traffic and a VMR rule references its exact configured title. A texture-only repaint cannot replace a missing base model. Complex flyable aircraft may also show incorrect gear, lights or control surfaces when used as traffic, while detailed interiors can reduce frame rates sharply at busy airports.
Why are VATSIM aircraft white, wrong or missing?
A white or incorrect aircraft normally means vPilot reached a fallback because its preferred model was unavailable. The appearance points towards the likely fault:
- Generic white aircraft: the type was recognised, but no matching airline livery was installed or selected. Confirm the callsign rule and required model package.
- Correct airline but wrong aircraft: the exact type is missing, the remote pilot supplied an inaccurate type code, or a broad rule is taking priority over a specific rule.
- Magenta checkerboard textures: texture files or their fallback references are missing or incompatible. Reinstall the complete package intended for the correct aircraft and simulator generation.
- Invisible aircraft or failed injection: the VMR may reference a model title that MSFS 2024 cannot load. Check that the model exists locally and that the package explicitly supports MSFS 2024.
- Duplicate aircraft: native MSFS multiplayer, AI or live traffic is probably running alongside vPilot-injected VATSIM traffic. Disable those traffic sources while using VATSIM.
- Severe stutters at busy airports: too many high-detail flyable models are being used as traffic. Replace them with optimised model-matching aircraft or reduce the number of displayed aircraft.
A mistake we see constantly is mixing several large VMR sets without checking their order or dependencies. When troubleshooting, enable one known model library and its matching rules first, confirm that it works, then restore additional rule sets one at a time.
Will other VATSIM pilots see my exact livery?
No. Every pilot sees traffic through their own installed models and model-matching rules. Selecting a special livery on your aircraft does not send those texture files to other users or force their simulator to display that paint.
Using the correct ICAO aircraft type and a conventional airline callsign gives other clients the best chance of selecting an accurate model. Special anniversary, retro and fictional liveries generally appear only when the observer already has a matching local model and a rule designed to select it. Model matching affects appearance only; it does not change aircraft position, ATC service or network connectivity.
