Can I use voice recognition for flight simulator ATC?

ATC voice recognition either maps recognised phrases to stock ATC menu commands or replaces the simulator’s controller with a separate ATC engine. These approaches should not be confused with controller voice output or microphone communication with another person.

Does Microsoft Flight Simulator have built-in ATC voice recognition?

The standard ATC interfaces in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 use selectable responses rather than general free-form microphone input. Hearing pilot and controller voices does not mean the simulator is listening to your readback.

How do I set up voice recognition for ATC?

A reliable setup requires compatible ATC software, the correct microphone device and a dedicated push-to-talk control.

  1. Check exact compatibility. Confirm support for your simulator, edition, operating system and aircraft type. An older FSX utility does not automatically work with Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane or Prepar3D.
  2. Select the recognition method. Choose voice-to-menu control if you want the stock ATC logic, or a separate ATC engine if you want it to issue and interpret clearances itself.
  3. Choose the microphone input. Select the headset microphone inside the ATC software as well as in the operating system. Avoid relying on an exposed laptop microphone in a room with speakers.
  4. Assign push-to-talk. Use a joystick or keyboard control that is not already assigned to another simulator, radio or multiplayer function. Push-to-talk normally produces fewer false activations than continuous listening.
  5. Configure the flight identity. Enter or import the correct callsign, aircraft and flight plan where the software requires them. If radios are modelled, tune the active COM radio to the expected frequency.
  6. Test a supported phrase. Start with wording shown by the software’s own phrase list. Check its input meter and recognition display before troubleshooting the simulator.

Why are my spoken ATC commands not recognised?

Most failed ATC commands come from the wrong audio device, an unsupported phrase, an inactive radio or a conflicting push-to-talk assignment.

  • No microphone activity: select the correct input and check the operating system’s microphone privacy permission for desktop applications.
  • Speech appears but no command runs: use the expected phrase structure and confirm that the ATC programme is in the correct flight or communication state.
  • The controller does not answer: verify the active COM frequency, radio power, flight-plan state and whether the airport or sector has simulated coverage.
  • The wrong callsign is recognised: make the aircraft identity in the ATC tool match the simulator or imported flight plan.
  • Commands work only with one window focused: check global key capture, push-to-talk conflicts and whether the simulator and companion application are running with different permission levels.
  • Cockpit sound triggers false commands: use a close-fitting headset microphone, lower speaker volume and prefer push-to-talk over voice activation.
  • Recognition works but ATC is silent: select the correct audio-output device. Speech input and controller voice output are separate settings.

Do I need to use exact ATC phraseology?

Most voice ATC tools understand a defined grammar rather than every natural-language sentence. Callsign, request type, runway, altitude and readback order may all affect recognition, although some systems accept more variation than others.

Follow the phrase examples supplied by the particular tool and speak at a steady pace. A common mistake is adding conversational wording that a human would understand but a constrained recogniser does not. Clear pronunciation matters more than imitating a particular accent.

Can I use ATC voice recognition on Xbox or PlayStation?

Console flight simulators generally cannot run the Windows companion applications or plug-ins used for third-party ATC recognition. A connected headset may support multiplayer communication, but it does not make stock ATC accept spoken commands.

This affects Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PlayStation. Unless the console version explicitly includes a supported voice-input feature, assume that its normal ATC interface still requires menu or controller selections.

Is voice recognition the same as live voice ATC?

No. Voice recognition interprets your words in software, while live ATC sends your microphone audio to a human controller who can understand flexible wording and react to changing traffic.
