Which VR headsets work with FSX and Prepar3D?

Prepar3D can use VR headsets exposed through the Oculus/Meta PC runtime or SteamVR, making Rift, PC-linked Quest, HTC Vive and Valve Index models the main practical choices. FSX has no native VR support; those headsets work only through compatible third-party VR software or as a tracked virtual monitor.

VR headset compatibility at a glance

Headset compatibility depends on the simulator version and VR runtime, not just the name printed on the headset. Prepar3D releases differ in their support for Oculus/Meta and SteamVR interfaces, while neither boxed FSX nor FSX: Steam Edition includes a native VR mode.

VR hand-controller support is much less consistent than head tracking. Most Prepar3D users still operate the aircraft with a yoke, joystick, throttle, pedals and mouse rather than expecting full motion-controller interaction with every switch.

Does FSX support native VR?

No. Microsoft Flight Simulator X predates consumer PC VR and has no native stereoscopic rendering, headset tracking or OpenXR mode.

There are two very different ways to view FSX through a headset:

  • Third-party VR injection: compatible software creates separate eye views and transfers headset movement into the FSX camera. Support must cover the exact FSX edition, graphics mode and headset runtime.
  • Virtual monitor mode: the headset displays the normal FSX window on a large floating screen. This is useful for immersion but is not true cockpit VR with natural depth and unrestricted head movement.

A common mistake is buying a Quest and expecting an FSX application to appear in the headset. Quest models must first connect to a Windows PC, and that connection alone does not add VR rendering to FSX. FSX add-ons can create another limitation. Complex aircraft may depend on 2D pop-up panels, external configuration windows or small controls that are awkward inside a headset. Test with a stock virtual-cockpit aircraft before blaming the VR software.

How do I connect a VR headset to Prepar3D?

The reliable approach is to identify the interface supported by your exact Prepar3D release, then configure the headset through that same runtime.

  1. Check the Prepar3D version: confirm that it includes VR and determine whether it expects the Oculus/Meta runtime, SteamVR or another supported interface. Menu names and available APIs vary between releases.
  2. Set up the headset in Windows: install its PC software and verify tracking and display output outside Prepar3D first. For Rift hardware, our Rift and Rift S PC connection notes cover the main runtime differences.
  3. Put a Quest into PC VR mode: establish Quest Link, Air Link or the chosen streaming connection before starting the simulator. Running an application in standalone Quest mode will not expose Prepar3D to the headset.
  4. Start the matching runtime: open the Meta PC environment or SteamVR as required, then launch Prepar3D and enable its VR command.
  5. Test a simple scenario: use a default aircraft, an uncomplicated airport and conservative graphics settings. This separates basic VR compatibility from scenery, aircraft and performance problems.

Headset detection does not prove that the computer can render Prepar3D comfortably at the headset's resolution. Cockpit readability, field of view, comfort and GPU load should guide a purchase; our comparison of headset clarity and hardware demands explains those trade-offs.

Why does Prepar3D not detect my VR headset?

Most detection failures come from a runtime mismatch or from the headset still operating in standalone mode.

  • Wrong VR interface: SteamVR may recognise the headset while that Prepar3D release is trying to use the Oculus path, or the reverse.
  • Quest is not connected to the PC: the headset must enter PC VR mode rather than merely sharing the same wireless network.
  • Unsupported Prepar3D release: installing a modern OpenXR runtime does not add OpenXR support to an older simulator build.
  • Runtime started too late: initialise the headset and its required PC software before enabling VR in Prepar3D.
  • Conflicting translation layers: several API wrappers installed together can cause a black display, crashes or incorrect eye rendering. Test with one supported path at a time.
  • Add-on or performance problem: if VR opens but judders, freezes or shows broken panels, repeat the test with a default aircraft and scenery before changing headset drivers.

For FSX specifically, no headset is a plug-and-play choice. For Prepar3D, Rift-family, PC-linked Quest, Vive and Index headsets are the safest categories when the simulator version supports their runtime; less common or OpenXR-only devices require confirmation against that exact Prepar3D release.
