X-Plane 12 often looks foggy because its atmospheric scattering models moisture and limited visibility from the selected or live weather. Why can X-Plane 12 look foggy in clear weather?

Some haze in X-Plane 12 is intentional even when there are no clouds or precipitation. The simulator uses atmospheric scattering, so distant terrain loses contrast, particularly when looking towards a low sun or through a deep layer of atmosphere.

Clear weather does not mean unlimited visibility. A METAR showing 9999 means visibility of at least 10 kilometres, while reports capped at 10SM do not promise a perfectly transparent horizon. Codes such as HZ, BR and FG explicitly indicate haze, mist and fog.

Low cloud, precipitation and limited surface visibility can make the effect much stronger. Live weather may also interpolate observations between reporting stations, so conditions away from the airport can differ from the view a METAR alone suggests.

How can I tell atmospheric haze from graphics blur?

Atmospheric haze mainly reduces contrast with distance, while graphics blur also softens nearby aircraft details, cockpit text and runway markings.

How do I reduce haze in X-Plane 12?

The quickest fix is to establish a clean manual-weather baseline, then restore weather sources and visual modifications one at a time.

  1. Choose clear custom weather. Turn off live weather temporarily, remove precipitation and low cloud, and set a high visibility value. Apply the changes and allow the atmosphere to redraw.
  2. Test in daylight. Use a familiar airport and keep the sun behind or above the aircraft. Strong glare near sunrise or sunset can look like excessive fog even with good reported visibility.
  3. Compare cockpit and external views. If only the cockpit is affected, operate the aircraft's demist, defog or windscreen-heat system where modelled. Pitot heat does not clear a windscreen.
  4. Check the live-weather report. Look for restricted visibility and haze, mist or fog codes. If the report does not match the displayed conditions, reload the weather and confirm that the simulator's location and time are correct.
  5. Disable visual and weather add-ons. Do not run two weather injectors together. Temporarily remove shader scripts, atmospheric replacements and post-processing tools, then test the unmodified simulator before restoring them individually.
  6. Check rendering resolution. A reduced rendering scale or aggressive upscaling makes the whole scene look soft. Anti-aliasing can improve jagged edges, but it cannot remove weather-generated haze.

What should I check when live weather causes the haze?

Live-weather haze should broadly follow reported visibility, but sparse observations and weather transitions can produce a different result between stations. Test manual weather first; if that is clear, the graphics engine is probably not the cause.

What if a graphics add-on made X-Plane 12 hazy?

A shader, weather script or post-processing preset can alter contrast, exposure and atmospheric colour enough to resemble fog. Test with the add-on disabled rather than stacking another preset over it.

Can I disable atmospheric haze completely?

X-Plane 12 does not provide a supported master switch that removes atmospheric scattering while leaving the rest of its lighting system intact. Raising custom-weather visibility reduces weather haze, but distant objects may still lose some contrast because that is part of the simulator's lighting model.

Private datarefs, altered shaders and replacement scripts may change the effect, but updates can break them or create unnatural lighting and cloud boundaries. For a reliably clearer view, use high manual visibility, clear skies, a higher sun angle and an unmodified visual setup.
