How do I zoom the mini-map in MSFS 2024?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to zoom the MSFS 2024 mini-map by mouse, touch or controller, plus fixes when the EFB map ignores zoom inputs.

To zoom the mini-map in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, open the EFB Map page, move the pointer over the map and roll the mouse wheel. On a touchscreen, pinch with two fingers. With a controller, focus the map first, then use the zoom input assigned by your active control profile.

How do I zoom the MSFS 2024 mini-map?

The map must have input focus before a mouse, touchscreen or controller command will change its scale.

  1. Open the EFB Map page. In MSFS 2024, what many simmers call the mini-map is part of the Electronic Flight Bag rather than the separate toolbar window used by MSFS 2020. If it is not visible, follow our explanation of opening the EFB map in MSFS 2024.
  2. Place the pointer inside the map. Do not leave it over an EFB menu, button or another cockpit display.
  3. Choose the input for your device.
    • Mouse: roll the wheel forwards to zoom in and backwards to zoom out.
    • Touchscreen: spread two fingers to zoom in or pinch them together to zoom out.
    • Xbox or PlayStation controller: move the gamepad cursor onto the map, give the map focus, then use the assigned map zoom input. The exact control can differ between platforms and customised profiles.

A keyboard command will only work if the relevant map or EFB zoom action exists in the active control profile and has been assigned.

Why won't the mini-map zoom?

If the mini-map ignores the zoom command, the usual cause is focus or an altered control profile rather than a broken map.

  • The mouse wheel changes the cockpit view: the EFB has not captured the pointer. Move the cursor fully inside the map and select a blank part of it before trying again.
  • The map pans instead of zooming: you are using the map movement input. Use the dedicated zoom input or mouse wheel instead.
  • The controller does nothing: check that the map is focused and that you are editing the profile actually loaded for that controller. Custom profiles can omit or override EFB controls. Our guide to mapping and saving MSFS 2024 controller bindings covers the profile workflow.
  • The scale has stopped changing: you may have reached the map's minimum or maximum zoom level.
  • The whole EFB is unresponsive: switch to another EFB page and return to Map, or close and reopen the EFB. Restart the flight only if the tablet remains frozen.

Map imagery can also take a moment to sharpen after a large scale change. If labels and features redraw at a different size, zoom worked even if the background layer is still loading.

How do I pan or recentre the map after zooming?

Drag the map to pan, then use its aircraft or recentre control to return the view to your aeroplane.

Panning may take the map out of aircraft-follow mode, so the aircraft can fly towards the edge of the display even though the map itself is working. For the related controls and the differences between MSFS 2020 and 2024, see our guidance on panning, zooming and recentering the VFR map.

Is the MSFS 2024 mini-map the same as the MSFS 2020 VFR Map?

No. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 places its main flight map in the EFB, while MSFS 2020 uses a VFR Map opened from the in-flight toolbar.

Both support familiar actions such as zooming, panning and recentering, but their location and controller focus behaviour differ. Instructions that tell you to open the MSFS 2020 toolbar VFR Map therefore do not describe the MSFS 2024 interface.
