Zulu time is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the single worldwide clock used in aviation to avoid time-zone confusion. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, convert your planned departure to UTC, set the simulator’s date and time in the preflight controls, then verify that the cockpit clock or avionics shows the same Zulu time.
Zulu time in aviation
The letter Z identifies the zero-offset time zone and is pronounced “Zulu” in the aviation phonetic alphabet. Zulu time never changes for daylight saving, so pilots, weather reports and flight plans can use one reference worldwide.
For flight-simulation purposes, UTC and GMT show the same clock time, although they are technically different standards. Common formats include:

Set Zulu time in MSFS 2024
Set the simulator’s world clock to the required UTC time before starting the flight, rather than merely entering a departure time in the flight plan.
- Check the source time. Confirm whether your schedule, flight plan or briefing says
Z,UTCor local time. Passenger timetables are commonly local, while operational flight plans often use UTC. - Convert local time if necessary. Account for the airport’s UTC offset on the flight date, including daylight saving.

- Select the date first. UTC conversion can move the flight onto the previous or following day. Then adjust the clock or time slider until its UTC readout matches the required Zulu time.
- Read the field label. If MSFS displays UTC or Zulu, enter the Zulu value directly. If a control displays airport local time, enter the converted local equivalent instead. Do not put
1400into a local-time field simply because the flight plan says1400Z. - Distinguish schedule time from simulator time. A planned departure entered in the EFB does not necessarily change the environmental clock. - Verify inside the aircraft. Once the avionics are powered, compare the UTC page, GPS clock or cockpit clock with the intended time. If you must alter it after loading, use the available time controls from the in-flight toolbar panels. Career missions and scripted activities may lock these controls.
How do I convert local time to Zulu?
Subtract the local UTC offset from local time: UTC = local time − UTC offset. A negative offset is therefore added when converting to UTC.

Use the offset that applies on the simulated date, not necessarily the offset in effect where you live. A one-hour error is usually a daylight-saving mistake; a correct time on the wrong day usually means the UTC conversion crossed midnight.
Why does the cockpit clock not match Zulu time?
A mismatch normally means one display is showing local time while another is showing UTC, although aircraft initialisation and manually adjustable clocks can also cause it.
- Exact time-zone difference: one display is local and the other is UTC.
- One-hour difference: the wrong daylight-saving offset was used.
- Correct time but wrong date: the conversion crossed 00:00 UTC.
- Clock has not updated: some avionics need electrical power or GPS initialisation before displaying simulation UTC.
- Analogue clock differs from GPS: some aircraft clocks are manually set or have selectable local and UTC modes.
A mistake we see constantly is comparing the cockpit’s Zulu display with the computer or console clock. The device clock reflects your real local time; the aircraft should follow the simulator’s selected date and time.
Does Zulu time control Live Weather?
No. Simulator time and the weather source are separate controls in MSFS 2024, so you can use a custom Zulu time while retaining Live Weather, or pair that time with a preset or manually configured weather.
Live Weather does not become historical weather merely because you select an earlier date. This can produce present-day atmospheric conditions under lighting from another date or hour. Which flight times are normally Zulu?
METAR observations and aviation timestamps ending in Z are UTC, but an unlabelled schedule should not automatically be treated as Zulu.
- METAR and TAF timestamps: UTC, explicitly marked with
Z. - Operational flight plans: commonly UTC, but check the heading or legend.
- Airline passenger schedules: normally local time at each departure and arrival airport.
- EFB departure and arrival fields: follow the displayed UTC, Zulu or local-time label.
- Cockpit GPS and FMS clocks: usually UTC, although aircraft implementations vary.
