This comprehensive add-on brings the Air Berlin Boeing 737-400 (registration D-ABAL) into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 in a freeware package. Created by FFX and Andreas Scherrer, it spans the classic 737 series, enhanced with a meticulously designed flight model, realistic animations, and authentic CFM56-3 engine sounds. Air Berlin was a notable German carrier that operated numerous 737 variants until it ceased operations, and this particular 737-400 reflects the airline’s short-to-medium-haul service across Europe.
Development Background and Design Approach
This project traces its roots to an initial FS2000 model using FSDS1, which then evolved into a fully Gmax-based design. Over time, it has covered the complete 737 Classic family, including the -300, -400, and -500 variants. The developers have indicated plans to include other 737 models in the future. The hallmark of this package is the faithful exterior geometry, capturing details like window arrangements and engine placements that are characteristic of the 737-400’s airframe. The end result is a model that stands out for visual clarity and structural accuracy.
Flight Deck and Engine Audio
Included in this release are high-fidelity CFM56-3 sounds recorded from various 737s, such as JAT 737-300s and an Air France 737-500, with contributions from Nils Alegren. These recordings capture the true intensity experienced without a headset in a real flight deck, where engine roar can overshadow other sounds. For those who prefer softer audio levels, the simulator’s own engine volume slider can be adjusted. The developers specifically request that users do not contact them about sound volume, emphasizing this authentic portrayal of cockpit noise.
Special Animations and Key Assignments
- Main Door Operation: Press Shift+E to open or close the primary cabin door. This aligns with the standard simulator command and matches the real-world hinged door movement.
- Airstairs Deployment: These stairs appear when you assign and use the wing fold command in the simulator. Bear in mind, once deployed, flight is not feasible since the stairs effectively replace the wing fold function in the sim’s code.
- Canoe Landing Lights: The Boeing 737-100 through -500 family employed retractable landing lights situated on the flap canoes. To replicate this feature here, set a key for tailhook within the simulator. Activating that function will extend or retract these lights.
Distinctive Features of the Air Berlin 737-400
This 737-400 variant reflects Air Berlin’s distinctive red and white livery, presenting accurate markings and paint details. In actual service, the 737-400 could accommodate around 146 to 168 passengers, making it well-suited for the airline’s typical short-to-midrange routes across Europe. The authenticity of this livery and the detailed fuselage lines highlight the dedication of the creators in providing a visually immersive flying experience.
Fully Integrated Freeware Package
The complete package, shared on Fly Away Simulation, includes the base model and the textures ready to operate within Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. Everything required to enjoy this aircraft—exterior model, sound set, animations, and flight dynamics—arrives assembled in a single installation. Flight sim enthusiasts can experiment with external walkarounds during preflight checks or experience the flight deck ambiance of early-generation 737s, all while appreciating the thorough attention to detail contributed by FFX and Andreas Scherrer.
