How does Career Mode differ in MSFS 2020 and 2024?

Ian Stephens
In short

Compare MSFS 2020 vs 2024 Career Mode: licences, missions, credits, companies, aircraft ownership, add-on limits and progress transfer.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 has no built-in Career Mode; it is a sandbox, with separate activities such as training, landing challenges and bush trips. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 adds a structured career with certifications, specialisations, missions, reputation, credits, companies and aircraft ownership. No career progress carries over from 2020.

Career Mode is optional in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Free Flight and other activities remain available, as explained in our breakdown of MSFS game modes and activities.

How does MSFS 2024 Career Mode work?

MSFS 2024 connects qualifications, paid missions and business ownership in one progression system rather than treating each flight as a standalone session.

  1. Gain pilot qualifications. Complete the opening requirements, then acquire the certifications needed for more demanding aircraft and work.
  2. Unlock specialisations. These open mission categories such as sightseeing, cargo, charter, search and rescue, firefighting and airline operations when their prerequisites are satisfied.
  3. Fly employee missions. The employer supplies the aircraft, making these jobs the lower-risk way to build credits and reputation.
  4. Start a company. Freelance work requires a suitable company and compatible aircraft, but gives the pilot control over business expansion.
  5. Manage the consequences. Mission performance changes reputation, while damage to an owned aircraft can turn a profitable flight into an expensive repair.

Employee work and freelance companies

Employee missions use an aircraft supplied for the job, so the pilot does not buy it or pay its repair bill. The reward is generally lower, but these missions are useful for building capital and unlocking more of the career.

Freelance missions use aircraft owned through the pilot's company. Their gross rewards can be higher, but running costs, maintenance and damage belong to the business. A mistake we see constantly is treating the displayed reward as pure profit.

Before buying an aircraft, check that it suits the intended company and mission category, then retain credits for maintenance. The cheapest purchase can become the expensive option if its condition is poor or it cannot fly the work available to that business.

If a mission type appears to be missing, check its certification and specialisation requirements, the active mission filters and aircraft eligibility before assuming the mode is broken.

Can you play Career Mode in MSFS 2020?

No. Flight training, bush trips, landing challenges and the logbook do not form a connected career in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. There are no native pilot licences, job earnings, company finances or aircraft purchases.

Third-party career tools and virtual airlines can supply schedules, jobs, ranks and an external economy. That progression belongs to the outside system rather than MSFS 2020 itself; our guide to virtual airline and external career systems explains how that arrangement works.

Does MSFS 2020 progress transfer to 2024 Career Mode?

No. MSFS 2020 has no native career database for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 to import. Flight hours, logbook entries, completed activities and achievements from 2020 do not grant 2024 certifications, reputation, credits, companies or owned aircraft.

Add-on ownership and content compatibility are separate from career progression. An aircraft entitlement carrying into the newer simulator would not make it automatically eligible for Career Mode or award the qualifications needed to fly it.

Can add-on aircraft be used in MSFS 2024 Career Mode?

Only when Career Mode recognises the aircraft for a supported role and the pilot meets the relevant certification and specialisation requirements. Installing an aircraft does not guarantee that it will appear in the career aircraft market or mission list.

Free Flight is less restrictive, so an add-on can work there while remaining unavailable for career jobs. We cover the eligibility checks and common incompatibilities separately in our explanation of how Career Mode handles mods and add-on aircraft.

Choosing between MSFS 2020 and 2024 for career flying

Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 if you want built-in goals, qualifications, generated work, an economy and company management. Choose MSFS 2020 if you prefer unrestricted sandbox flying and are content to create your own rules or use an external career service.

Career Mode is one distinction among many. Our full comparison of the two simulator generations covers the wider differences in aircraft, activities, technology and content.
