FSX F-4 Phantom II Smoke Effects

F-4 Phantom II engine smoke effects bring a more authentic afterburner trail to Ito/Rooks Phantom variants, including popular squadron paints like VX-4 Black Bunny and VF-101 Grim Reapers, in FSX. The package updates the aircraft.cfg smoke system and uses the included fx_smoke_f6 effect for clean, convincing visuals in flight.

Engine smoke effect for the Ito/Rooks F-4 Phantom II such as the "VX-4 Black Bunny" (VX-4BLACKBUNNY.ZIP) and the "VF-101 Grim Reapers" (VF101GRIMREAPERS.ZIP) models. Easy installation. By Tom Tiedman.

Installation:

  • Open your F-4 "aircraft.cfg" file, find the [SMOKESYSTEM] section, and delete it. It does not display properly in FSX. (The afterburner flames will still display... in fact, in FSX you will notice they are displayed in all throttle settings).
  • Copy and paste all of the [SMOKESYSTEM] info. below back into your F-4 "aircraft.cfg" file, replacing what you just deleted. (Then click 'file', then click 'save', of course).
  • Copy and paste the enclosed "fx_smoke_f6.fx" file into your FSX "Effects" folder. (It's probably there already).
  • Press your "I" key while flying your F-4 and enjoy the smoke coming off of the afterburner flames!

Requires dependencies

This add-on may require the following files to function properly. If this is a repaint, the dependency below is likely the base aircraft package.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D add-on
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place files per the readme

Most FSX add-ons go into one of: SimObjects\Airplanes\, Addon Scenery\, Effects\, or Gauges\.
  3. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
