A lower-tier NVIDIA card does not beat a faster AMD card merely because it has DLSS. Compare desktop cards with desktop cards too: laptop GPUs carrying a similar product name can have different power limits, cooling and performance.

Does Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 support DLSS 5?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 does not expose a separate graphics option labelled DLSS 5, and its Sim Update 5 is not an NVIDIA DLSS version. Sim Update 5 was released in April 2026; the number identifies the simulator update.

This explains much of the confusion around “DLSS 5 MSFS 2024”. That phrase might refer to Sim Update 5, a DLSS library or model revision, or a marketed NVIDIA feature generation. Those numbers are not interchangeable.

The simulator normally presents DLSS through its anti-aliasing or upscaling settings, with frame generation controlled separately when the hardware and game integration support it. A driver or NVIDIA app profile may offer a newer model without changing the in-game DLSS label, but it cannot add a feature that MSFS has not integrated.

How can you check which DLSS features are available?

Use the simulator and driver controls rather than assuming that a numbered file or update means full feature support.

  1. Update the simulator through its normal PC platform so its graphics integration matches the installed build.
  2. Install a compatible NVIDIA driver and inspect the MSFS game profile for any officially offered DLSS overrides.
  3. Open the simulator’s graphics settings and check which upscaling and frame-generation options actually appear for your GPU.
  4. Avoid manually replacing DLSS libraries unless the simulator developer explicitly supports that method. A copied library may be overwritten, rejected or produce rendering faults, and its file version does not prove that every related feature is active.

What about DLSS 5 in MSFS 2020?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 also has no graphics mode specifically named DLSS 5. It offers DLSS features on compatible RTX PC hardware, but support must be judged from that simulator’s own settings, integration and driver profile—not from Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 or its Sim Update 5.

Where does NVIDIA have the advantage?

NVIDIA has the clearest advantage when DLSS, integrated frame generation or PC VR matters more than maximum native performance per pound.

  • DLSS Super Resolution: This renders below the output resolution and reconstructs the image. It can recover considerable GPU performance at 1440p, 4K and high VR render resolutions, but it does little when MSFS is limited by the processor’s main thread.
  • Frame generation: Compatible cards can insert generated frames between conventionally rendered ones. This can improve displayed smoothness even during a CPU-limited flight, but it does not accelerate the flight model, avionics or main thread.
  • VR compatibility: NVIDIA remains our safer general recommendation for demanding OpenXR headsets and wireless headsets that depend heavily on video encoding. Frame generation available on a monitor should not be assumed to work in VR.

DLSS is not always the best-looking cockpit option. At lower output resolutions, instrument lettering, moving maps, aerials and distant runway markings may look softer or show ghosting compared with native TAA. Judge it from the pilot’s seat rather than from an external view.

Frame generation also needs a stable base frame rate. Starting with an uneven or very low rendered frame rate tends to produce poor control response and more visible artefacts around propellers, display edges, menus and rapidly moving scenery.

When is AMD the better MSFS purchase?

AMD is the better choice when an equivalently priced card provides clearly more native rendering performance or useful VRAM and you mainly fly on a monitor.

This is especially relevant if you prefer native resolution or TAA to DLSS. More VRAM can also help at 4K and with detailed airports, high-resolution textures, complex aircraft and large scenery packages, although spare VRAM does not increase frame rate by itself.

FSR may provide upscaling or other supported features in configurations where MSFS offers them, but do not compare brand marketing alone. Check the actual simulator menu and benchmark the mode you intend to use. Driver-level frame insertion is not automatically equivalent to frame generation integrated into the simulator.

Is Microsoft Flight Simulator actually GPU-limited?

A GPU upgrade delivers its full benefit only when MSFS is limited by graphics rendering rather than the processor’s main thread.

A mistake we see constantly is judging performance in a simple aircraft over open countryside and then expecting the same result in an airliner at a detailed hub. Glass cockpits, AI traffic, airport activity and high Terrain Level of Detail settings can create a Limited by MainThread condition even with a powerful GPU.

  1. Disable frame generation for diagnosis and load the aircraft, airport, weather and traffic combination that causes trouble.
  2. Open the built-in developer FPS display and look for Limited by GPU or Limited by MainThread.
  3. Lower render scaling substantially. A large frame-rate gain points towards a GPU limit; little change usually indicates a main-thread or other bottleneck.
  4. Change the matching settings. Render scaling, clouds and resolution tend to expose the GPU, while traffic and Terrain Level of Detail frequently affect the main thread.

How much VRAM should an MSFS GPU have?

For a new card, 8 GB is a budget-level target, 12 GB provides more breathing room at 1440p, and 16 GB or more is preferable rather than mandatory for 4K, VR and texture-heavy add-ons.

These are practical buying guidelines, not hard simulator requirements. An existing 8 GB card can still perform well with suitable settings. Equally, a slow card with 16 GB does not become faster than a powerful 12 GB card simply because it has more memory.

Insufficient VRAM can cause repeatable frame-time spikes, texture reductions or heavy asset swapping. Memory allocation shown by monitoring software is not proof on its own; the useful test is whether lowering texture resolution, output resolution or render scaling removes the problem. MSFS 2020 vs 2024: does the GPU choice change?

The same buying principles apply to MSFS 2020 and 2024, but benchmark results and graphics-feature support should not be transferred blindly between them.

Aircraft, airport, weather, traffic, simulator update and CPU all influence the result. MSFS 2024 also depends heavily on streamed content, so a pause that appears to be graphics-related may come from asset delivery rather than the GPU. Compare cards using the same simulator version and a demanding scenario resembling the flights you actually make.

This AMD-versus-NVIDIA decision applies to PC only. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is available on PC and Xbox but was never released on PlayStation. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is also available on PS5 and PS5 Pro; console graphics hardware is fixed and does not provide a buyer-selectable NVIDIA DLSS option.

Which GPU should you buy for Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Choose NVIDIA when its MSFS features solve a need you actually have; choose AMD when the competing card provides meaningfully better conventional performance or memory for your budget.

  1. Choose NVIDIA for VR, especially when broad headset compatibility and wireless encoding are priorities.
  2. Choose NVIDIA for DLSS or supported frame generation, provided the card also has enough base performance and VRAM for your resolution.
  3. Choose AMD for monitor flying when it offers faster native or TAA performance, or more useful VRAM, at a similar price.
  4. Check the main-thread limit first. A CPU-limited setup may gain visual headroom from a faster GPU without gaining the expected rendered frame rate.
