AMD or NVIDIA for Microsoft Flight Simulator? Compare VRAM, DLSS, frame generation, VR and bottlenecks before choosing your MSFS GPU.
For Microsoft Flight Simulator, NVIDIA is usually the safer all-round GPU choice because DLSS, frame generation on supported cards and generally strong VR support are useful in this simulator. AMD can be the better-value buy when an equivalent budget gets you more raster performance or VRAM. Compare exact cards, not brands.
AMD vs NVIDIA in Microsoft Flight Simulator
Neither manufacturer wins every MSFS configuration; resolution, headset use, VRAM, processor speed and the exact graphics card matter more than the badge.

Do not mix benchmark results from MSFS 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. They can place different loads on the same hardware, and graphics features, drivers, aircraft, airports, weather and traffic all affect the result.
Where does NVIDIA have the advantage?
NVIDIA is the stronger default choice when you want DLSS, supported frame-generation features or the least troublesome route into PC VR.
- DLSS: It can recover substantial GPU performance at 1440p, 4K and high VR render resolutions. Glass-cockpit text, moving maps and thin scenery details can look softer than native TAA, so image quality still needs checking from the pilot's seat.
- Frame generation: Supported NVIDIA cards can create extra displayed frames when the simulator is GPU-limited. It does not make the flight model, avionics or main thread run faster.
- VR support: NVIDIA is generally the safer choice for demanding OpenXR headsets, especially when upscaling or wireless-headset encoding is part of the setup.
This does not mean every NVIDIA card beats its AMD rival. A lower-tier NVIDIA GPU remains a lower-tier GPU, regardless of its feature list.
When is AMD the better purchase?
AMD is often the better MSFS buy when it provides meaningfully faster conventional rendering or more VRAM at the same real purchase price.
That is particularly attractive for a monitor-based setup using native resolution or TAA, where DLSS and VR compatibility carry less weight. Extra VRAM can also help with 4K, high-resolution textures, detailed add-on airports and complex aircraft, although unused VRAM does not increase frame rate by itself.
Compare cards with the same simulator version, resolution, graphics preset and processor. A benchmark using a lightweight aircraft over open countryside tells you little about performance in an airliner at a large hub.
Is Microsoft Flight Simulator actually GPU-limited?
A faster graphics card only helps fully when MSFS is limited by the GPU rather than the processor's main thread.
Large airports, glass-cockpit aircraft, AI traffic and dense scenery often produce a Limited by MainThread condition. Replacing the GPU in that situation may improve resolution or visual settings without producing the expected frame-rate gain. Network or scenery-streaming pauses in MSFS 2024 can also resemble GPU stutter. Lowering graphics settings will not repair a connection, server or cache problem.
How much VRAM should an MSFS GPU have?
For a new purchase, 8 GB is best treated as a budget target, 12 GB gives more room at 1440p, and 16 GB or more is safer for 4K, VR and texture-heavy add-ons.
These are practical buying guidelines rather than simulator minimums. Resolution, render scaling, texture resolution and add-ons determine actual use. Insufficient VRAM can cause abrupt frame-time spikes, asset swapping or reduced texture quality; excess capacity simply remains unused. Does DLSS or frame generation settle the choice?
No, DLSS and frame generation are valuable tools, but neither compensates for an underpowered base GPU or a severe main-thread bottleneck.
Frame generation inserts generated frames between conventionally rendered ones. It raises the displayed frame rate, but it can add visual artefacts around propellers, cockpit displays and fast-moving edges, and it does not reduce all input latency. Start with a stable base frame rate before enabling it.
DLSS reduces the internal rendering load, but some pilots prefer native TAA because instrument lettering and distant runway details can look clearer. Test from the cockpit rather than judging only an external view.
Which GPU should you buy for MSFS 2020 or 2024?
For most buyers, we would use these decision rules:
- Choose NVIDIA when VR, DLSS or supported frame-generation features are priorities and the competing cards have similar raw performance and VRAM.
- Choose AMD when it offers clearly more native rendering performance or VRAM for the same budget and you mainly fly on a monitor.
- Choose the exact card, not the brand after checking MSFS-specific results at your intended resolution with a comparable processor.
- Check the bottleneck first because a CPU-limited simulator may benefit more from processor, traffic or settings changes than from a new GPU.
