Find the best NVIDIA driver for MSFS 2024, when to use Game Ready or Studio, and how to update, test or roll back without guesswork.
For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the best default is the newest compatible WHQL-certified NVIDIA Game Ready Driver that is stable on your GPU. There is no permanently “best” version: keep a known-good driver if MSFS runs properly, and roll back one release if an update introduces crashes, flicker, stutter or Frame Generation faults.
This advice applies to Windows PCs. Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles receive graphics drivers through their system software, so console players cannot select an NVIDIA driver.
Which NVIDIA driver should you install?
The latest WHQL Game Ready Driver is the right starting point for most MSFS 2024 PCs. An old version recommended in a benchmark may predate your GPU, Windows build or simulator update, so its results may not apply to your system.
| Driver choice | Choose it when | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Latest WHQL Game Ready | MSFS 2024 is your main gaming workload, especially with a newer RTX GPU, DLSS or Frame Generation | Even a certified release can introduce a hardware-specific regression |
| Previous known-good Game Ready | The latest release causes a repeatable problem that disappears after rollback | Do not remain on an old branch indefinitely without retesting newer releases |
| Studio Driver | The PC is primarily used for content-creation software and MSFS already runs correctly | Game-specific fixes and profiles may arrive on a different release schedule |
| Laptop manufacturer driver | The generic NVIDIA package breaks hybrid graphics, display switching, brightness control or power behaviour | It may be older than NVIDIA's general notebook package |
WHQL certification confirms that a package passed Microsoft's driver testing; it does not guarantee faultless performance with every aircraft, add-on and GPU. Use a hotfix driver only when its notes identify the fault you have rather than treating it as a routine upgrade.
Game Ready or Studio Driver for MSFS 2024?
Game Ready is our recommendation for a flight-simulation PC. It receives gaming profiles, compatibility changes and support for NVIDIA features on the gaming release schedule.
Studio Drivers use much of the same underlying technology and can run MSFS 2024 perfectly well. They are sensible when video, rendering or creative applications take priority, but switching to Studio should not be expected to increase flight-simulator frame rates. If an installed Studio Driver is completely stable, there is no need to replace it solely because of its label.
How should you update the NVIDIA driver?
Record the installed version and test one change at a time so that a regression can be traced and reversed. Our safe driver updating and rollback procedure covers the full process; the practical MSFS sequence is:
- Record the known-good version. Find it in the NVIDIA App or NVIDIA Control Panel and take note of any custom profile settings.
- Select the correct package. Match the driver to the exact desktop or notebook GPU and supported Windows edition. Legacy GPUs may need the newest driver available for their own support branch rather than NVIDIA's newest overall release.
- Try a normal upgrade first. A clean installation is useful when changing driver branches, recovering from corruption or troubleshooting a regression, but it is unnecessary for every release and can reset customised profiles.
- Restart Windows. Do this even if the installer does not insist, then verify that Windows has not substituted a different display driver.
- Allow the shader cache to repopulate. A driver change can invalidate cached shaders, so the first flight may stutter more than later runs. Do not judge the driver from the first few minutes alone.
- Run a repeatable test. Use the same aircraft, airport, weather, traffic and graphics preset. Compare frame-time consistency, visual faults and crashes rather than looking only at the highest FPS reading.
After installation, avoid forcing global anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering or undocumented overrides. Our sensible MSFS NVIDIA Control Panel profile explains the few settings that are genuinely useful and which ones should remain application-controlled.
Should you use a driver-removal utility?
No, not for a routine NVIDIA update. Start with the installer's normal upgrade or clean-install option. A separate removal utility is a last resort for repeated installer failures, corrupted packages or mismatched remnants that survive a clean reinstall; routine use adds risk without improving MSFS performance.
How can you tell if the latest driver is worse?
A driver regression is likely when a reproducible fault begins immediately after the update and disappears after reinstalling the previous package. Typical warning signs include:
- MSFS 2024 crashes or reports a graphics-device error in a scenario that was previously stable;
- clouds, cockpit displays or terrain begin flashing or showing corrupted artefacts;
- DLSS or Frame Generation develops new faults with unchanged simulator settings;
- VR starts disconnecting, flickering or suffering markedly worse frame pacing;
- the same controlled test flight shows persistent stutter after shader caches have had time to rebuild.
Restart and repeat the controlled test before rolling back. If the fault remains, reinstall the previous known-good driver using the clean-install option, restore any profile settings that were reset, and test again. If both versions behave identically, the cause is more likely to be a simulator update, add-on, Windows change or graphics setting.
Will a newer NVIDIA driver improve MSFS 2024 FPS?
Not necessarily; driver updates usually matter more for compatibility, stability and feature support than for a dramatic increase in average FPS. DLSS, NVIDIA Reflex and Frame Generation require suitable hardware, simulator settings and driver support, but the driver cannot remove every MSFS bottleneck.
Main-thread limits from traffic and object detail, exhausted VRAM, scenery streaming stalls and an overloaded Community folder can all resemble a driver problem. If changing drivers does not help, use our process to track down MSFS 2024 FPS and stutter bottlenecks instead of repeatedly reinstalling the same display software.
