The right pairing depends on resolution, aircraft complexity, traffic and Terrain and Object Level of Detail settings. These are desktop recommendations rather than guaranteed frame-rate targets; a detailed airliner at a busy handcrafted airport is much harder to run than a light aircraft over rural scenery.

Which CPU is best for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is our default recommendation for a new MSFS 2024-focused PC. Its eight fast cores and large 3D V-Cache suit a simulator that can distribute background work across several cores but still depends heavily on a critical main thread.

- Best discounted option: Ryzen 7 7800X3D, provided the complete platform costs noticeably less.
- Best budget AM5 options: Ryzen 5 7600 or 9600X, accepting lower performance around dense airports and heavy traffic.
The extra cores of a Ryzen 9 do not automatically produce more simulator FPS. Choose the 9950X3D for rendering, encoding or other core-heavy work alongside MSFS; the simpler 9800X3D is usually the better sim-only purchase. With a dual-CCD X3D processor, use a manufacturer-supported BIOS and AMD chipset driver so game workloads are assigned correctly.

Which GPU do I need for 1080p, 1440p, 4K or VR?
Choose a 16 GB mid-range GPU for a new 1080p or 1440p build, an RTX 5080-class card for high-setting 4K, and an RTX 5090 only when maximum 4K or high-resolution VR performance justifies the cost.
- 1080p: An RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB or RX 9060 XT 16 GB leaves useful texture and add-on headroom.
- 1440p and ultrawide: The RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT are the sensible performance tier.
- 4K: The RTX 5080 is the stronger high-setting choice. An RX 9070 XT remains viable with render scaling or selected settings reduced.
- VR: We favour the RTX 5080 or 5090 because headset resolution renders a very large image and benefits heavily from upscaling.

Nvidia or AMD for MSFS 2024?
Nvidia is our safer choice for VR and for pilots who intend to use DLSS and supported Frame Generation. AMD cards can offer better conventional rendering value and generous VRAM, making the RX 9070 XT a strong flat-screen alternative when it is priced substantially below an RTX 5070 Ti or 5080.
Frame Generation increases the displayed frame count, but it does not make the flight model, glass cockpit or main thread run faster. Starting from a low base frame rate can also produce control latency and visible artefacts around propellers, cockpit displays and rapidly moving scenery.
How much VRAM does MSFS 2024 need?
For a new graphics-card purchase, 12 GB is workable at 1440p, while 16 GB is the safer target for high-resolution textures, detailed airports, 4K and VR. An 8 GB card can run MSFS 2024, but texture quality, resolution and add-on use may need tighter limits.
VRAM exhaustion can appear as abrupt stutters, unusually large frame-rate drops or delayed texture detail. Extra VRAM does not make a slow graphics processor fast, however; 24 GB or 32 GB is valuable mainly for maximum-resolution workloads rather than ordinary 1080p flying.
Should I upgrade the CPU or GPU first?
Upgrade the CPU when MSFS 2024 is main-thread limited, and the GPU when it is GPU limited. Checking the limiter in your normal aircraft and airport is more reliable than choosing parts from an average frame-rate chart.
- Reproduce the demanding scenario. Load the aircraft, airport, weather, traffic and camera view that cause the problem.
- Read the simulator’s limiter. Follow our instructions to show the FPS overlay and identify its limiting component.
- Confirm a CPU limit. Reduce Terrain Level of Detail, Object Level of Detail and traffic. A meaningful improvement points towards the processor or those settings.
- Confirm a GPU limit. Lower output resolution or render scaling. If performance rises sharply, a faster graphics card will help.
- Rule out other causes. Network streaming, insufficient system memory, slow storage, overheating and background software can cause stutters that a new CPU or GPU will not fix.
Buying mistakes that waste money
- Pairing a flagship GPU with an older, slow CPU while using high traffic and Level of Detail settings.
- Buying an 8 GB card solely because its model number appears newer than a 12 GB or 16 GB alternative.
- Judging performance only by Frame Generation FPS instead of the underlying frame rate and latency.
- Assuming laptop and desktop GPUs with similar names deliver equivalent performance.
- Forgetting motherboard, BIOS, power-supply, case-clearance and cooling requirements when changing component generations.
