What are the best career add-ons for MSFS 2020?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Compare the best MSFS 2020 career add-ons for jobs, airline progression and company management, including PC/Xbox limits and tracking fixes.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020’s best career add-ons are NeoFly for a flexible free starting point, OnAir Company for a persistent online economy, Air Hauler 2 for deep company management, A Pilot’s Life – Chapter 2 for airline-pilot progression, and FSEconomy for a free shared economy. Most require the PC version.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 has no built-in persistent career with salaries, company finances or fleet ownership. That is the key difference explained in our guide to why MSFS 2020 needs external career software, whereas MSFS 2024 includes a native Career Mode.

Which MSFS 2020 career add-on should you choose?

Is NeoFly the best free career add-on?

NeoFly is the strongest first choice for most solo MSFS 2020 pilots. It combines jobs, money, aircraft ownership and pilot progression without forcing the player into one type of flying. Its mission mix suits general aviation particularly well, including cargo, passenger and specialist operations.

The core career can be used for free, while optional modules expand particular functions. Check what is included before buying extras; a mistake we see constantly is assuming every feature visible in a video belongs to the free package. Our detailed NeoFly setup and progression guide covers the career loop in more depth.

Should you choose OnAir or Air Hauler 2?

Choose OnAir for a server-based world; choose Air Hauler 2 for detailed company management under your own control. OnAir centres on persistent jobs, aircraft, finances and company activity in an online economy. It suits pilots who like market pressure and the sense that their company exists in a shared world.

Air Hauler 2 puts more emphasis on building a transport business, managing a fleet and using AI pilots alongside flights you operate yourself. It rewards careful planning, but importing aircraft and matching payload capacities can require attention. Neither is ideal if you only want an airline to assign your next route.

Which add-on is best for an airline-pilot career?

A Pilot’s Life – Chapter 2 is the clearest choice for an employed airline career. Instead of making you a company owner, it models applications, airline assignments, scheduled flights and career progression. That narrower focus works well for pilots who want to fly airliners and receive a roster rather than manage fuel prices, warehouses or hired crews.

When is FSEconomy a good choice?

FSEconomy suits pilots who value a free shared economy more than a modern interface. It offers assignments, aircraft rental or ownership and group operations across a long-running community economy. Aircraft type mapping, airport data and the connection client can feel dated, and scenery airports do not always align neatly with its database.

If the distinction between jobs, virtual airlines and persistent company finances is unclear, our explanation of how flight-simulation economy systems differ will help narrow the choice.

Do MSFS 2020 career add-ons work on Xbox?

The automatically tracked career add-ons above are effectively PC-only. They run as separate Windows applications and normally read simulator data through SimConnect or a supplied connector. Xbox Series X|S cannot run those external applications.

Owning the Microsoft Store edition on PC does not make an add-on an Xbox product. The PC Microsoft Store and Steam editions generally work with SimConnect applications, but Xbox compatibility must be stated separately. Do not buy a PC career manager on the assumption that it will appear in the in-sim Marketplace.

How do you install and run a career add-on correctly?

  1. Confirm MSFS 2020 support. Some products support several simulators or have separate connectors, so select the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 option rather than assuming automatic detection.
  2. Install the desktop application normally. Do not place the main Windows program in the Community folder. Add a supplied connector package there only when the product’s instructions explicitly require it.
  3. Create or import the aircraft carefully. Match the exact aircraft variant, capacity and registration where the career tool uses those details. A 737 variant, for example, should not automatically be treated as every other 737 model.
  4. Accept the job before departure. Start at the required airport in the accepted aircraft, then wait until the career application reports a simulator connection.
  5. Let the career tool handle operational values when required. Some systems calculate purchased fuel, payload or passenger numbers. Overwriting them in MSFS can produce an invalid flight or incorrect profit.
  6. Finish the flight completely. Park at the destination, set the parking brake and shut down as required. Wait for the application to record the result before closing either program.

Why did the add-on fail to record a flight?

Most missing flights come from connection, aircraft-matching or completion errors rather than a broken career file.

  • No SimConnect connection: restart the companion application, check the firewall prompt and confirm that it shows a connected simulator before departure.
  • Wrong aircraft or airport: verify the exact variant and ICAO code. Custom scenery can rename parking positions, but the underlying airport identity still has to match.
  • Slew, teleport or aircraft changes: many trackers reject flights after relocation, mid-flight aircraft changes or other unrealistic state changes. Time acceleration may also be restricted.
  • Incomplete arrival: crossing the runway threshold is not enough. Some applications wait for parking, engine shutdown or a final flight-submission command.
  • Fuel or payload disagreement: avoid changing values after the career application has dispatched the flight unless its rules permit this.

Can you use two career add-ons at the same time?

Two applications can often read the same MSFS 2020 flight, but one should remain the primary economy. Running two company systems can produce conflicting payloads, fuel quantities, airport requirements and financial penalties. Pairing one economy manager with an ATC or cabin utility is usually cleaner than maintaining two parallel company ledgers.

If the real goal is assigned airline routes, ranks and persistent records rather than business ownership, consider a virtual airline career with flight reporting instead. It can provide structure without adding another aircraft economy.
