What are the best free VR flight simulator games?

Ian Stephens
In short

Compare the best free VR flight simulator games for combat and civilian flying, with costs, headset support, controls and common setup fixes.

The best free VR flight simulator games are DCS World for serious combat flying, War Thunder for accessible online air battles, and FlightGear for open-source civilian simulation. DCS offers the strongest ready-to-fly VR experience; FlightGear is genuinely free but needs more setup. X-Plane’s demo is also useful for testing VR hardware.

Best free VR flight simulator games compared

DCS World is our best overall recommendation because its free core combines convincing flight modelling with mature PC VR support.

SimulatorFree modelBest forMain limitation
DCS WorldFree core simulator with optional paid aircraftRealistic combat flyingSmall free aircraft selection and demanding performance
War ThunderFree-to-play with optional purchasesAccessible online air combatProgression grind and less systems depth
FlightGearFully free and open sourceCivilian flying and experimentationVR setup and aircraft quality vary

Which free VR flight simulator should you choose?

Choose according to the type of flying you want, rather than the number of downloadable aircraft advertised.

DCS World for realistic combat

Choose DCS World if combat realism matters more than having a large free hangar. Its free package includes the Su-25T attack aircraft and the unarmed TF-51D, along with free terrain, missions and multiplayer access.

The Su-25T uses command-based controls rather than a fully clickable cockpit, while the TF-51D provides more detailed cockpit interaction. A joystick or HOTAS is strongly preferable in both; VR motion controllers do not replace properly bound flight and weapon controls.

War Thunder for quick online battles

Choose War Thunder when easy matchmaking and shorter combat sessions matter more than study-level cockpit systems. Aircraft can be flown without paying, but progression is built around research, unlocks and optional purchases.

Its simulator-style modes work best with a joystick and physical throttle. Cockpits are primarily visual rather than fully clickable, so configure essential controls before putting on the headset. An internet connection and account are required.

FlightGear for free civilian flying

Choose FlightGear if you want civilian aviation without a paid base simulator. It has desktop VR support, worldwide scenery and a broad community-built aircraft library, but compatibility depends more heavily on the release, graphics backend and headset runtime.

Aircraft quality is uneven: one cockpit may have working three-dimensional instruments while another was designed mainly for monitor use. Our assessment of FlightGear’s realism, platforms and setup explains what to expect before downloading large scenery packages.

Is the X-Plane VR demo completely free?

The X-Plane 12 demo supports VR on a compatible PC, but it is a restricted trial rather than a permanently free simulator. It limits the available scenery area and disables joystick input after 15 minutes per session.

That restriction makes it unsuitable for regular flying, but useful for checking headset clarity, cockpit scale and computer performance. Our X-Plane 12 trial download provides the package and operating-system details.

What hardware and controls do free VR flight sims need?

You need a compatible PC VR headset, a computer capable of sustaining stable VR frame timing and at least a gamepad or joystick. Our practical flight-simulation VR hardware checklist covers the computer, connection and control requirements in more depth.

  • Headset: A tethered PC headset works directly, while a Quest normally streams the simulator from a VR-capable PC. These simulators are not standalone Quest applications; our Quest PC flight-simulation setup guidance explains the connection choices.
  • Flight controls: A basic joystick is the sensible minimum. A HOTAS is better for DCS and War Thunder, while rudder pedals help with warbirds, helicopters and crosswind handling but are not mandatory.
  • Cockpit interaction: Do not assume hand controllers will operate every switch. Bind trim, brakes, landing gear, flaps, recentering, pause and view controls to physical buttons before entering VR.
  • Platform: The strongest free choices are PC-based. Ordinary desktop support on an operating system does not automatically mean that its VR build supports the same headsets.

How do you fix common free flight simulator VR problems?

Most VR failures come from the wrong headset runtime, incomplete control bindings or desktop graphics settings that are too demanding for two high-resolution views.

  • The simulator opens only on the monitor: Start the headset software first, confirm the intended VR or OpenXR runtime is active, and then enable VR inside the simulator where required.
  • The headset is connected but remains black: Close unnecessary VR translation layers, restart the headset service and launch the simulator again. Running competing runtimes can send the image to the wrong device.
  • The controls do nothing: Check that the correct device and aircraft profile are selected. DCS stores bindings per aircraft, so controls assigned to the TF-51D do not automatically carry across to the Su-25T.
  • The view judders when turning your head: Reduce per-eye render resolution, shadows, clouds and mirrors before sacrificing cockpit texture clarity. Stable frame timing matters more in VR than maximum visual settings.
  • The seat position or cockpit scale feels wrong: Sit in your normal flying position and use the simulator’s VR recenter command. Bind that command to a physical button so it remains available with the headset on.
