Our default recommendation is to start with X-Plane 12’s own real weather, then add a commercial engine only when you can name the feature you are missing. Which X-Plane 12 weather add-on should I choose?
Active Sky XP 12 is the strongest all-round choice when weather operations matter more than dramatically changing the cloud renderer. It suits IFR flying, changing conditions along a route and users who want a proper weather interface rather than a collection of visual presets.
xEnviro is the better fit when you want one product to take greater control of both weather and its appearance. That broader scope also means more potential for frame-rate loss, visual quirks after simulator updates and incompatibility with other environment tools.
VisualXP makes more sense when your priority is cloud shape, sky colour, lighting and environmental presentation. Check the exact edition before buying because its visual and weather-engine features are not identical across packages. Can I run two weather add-ons together?
No: only one program should control live weather at a time. Two injectors can repeatedly overwrite the same conditions, causing sudden wind shifts, clouds that vanish and rebuild, weather that resets to clear, or data that never matches either source.
- Establish a clean baseline. Confirm that native real weather works before installing anything else.
- Remove old injectors and scripts. Move unused plugin folders completely out of
Resources/plugins. Simply renaming a folder may not stop X-Plane loading the plugin binary inside it. - Check FlyWithLua separately. A script under
Resources/plugins/FlyWithLua/Scriptscan continue changing weather datarefs after its companion plugin has been removed. - Install one XP12-specific product. Use its installer or documented location rather than copying an old X-Plane 11 installation.
- Restart and inspect the log. If the weather engine does not appear, check
Log.txtin the X-Plane folder for missing libraries, blocked network access or an unsupported plugin build.
A visual package may coexist with a weather engine only when its documentation explicitly supports that combination and its own weather control can be disabled. Never assume that two products are compatible merely because both load without an error message.
Why does add-on weather not match the METAR?
A small difference does not necessarily mean the engine is broken. A METAR is a timed observation at one station, while X-Plane depicts a three-dimensional weather volume and blends conditions between reporting points to avoid an abrupt wall of weather.
- Compare the same airport identifier and observation time; nearby stations can report very different visibility and wind.
- Remember that reported cloud bases are normally expressed above ground level, not as the altitude shown directly on an aircraft altimeter.
- Allow a newly loaded flight or weather refresh time to transition instead of judging the first cloud frame.
- Disable every second injector before troubleshooting a persistent mismatch.

How much performance do weather add-ons cost?
Weather injectors that retain X-Plane’s native rendering usually add less graphics load than products replacing the wider atmosphere, but dense volumetric clouds remain expensive regardless of the source. xEnviro or aggressive VisualXP presets therefore need more performance testing than a data-focused engine such as Active Sky.
Test with the same aircraft, location, viewpoint and weather preset. Reduce the add-on’s cloud or atmospheric detail first, then rendering resolution and anti-aliasing if the GPU is saturated. Changing several settings at once makes it impossible to identify the expensive feature.
Are X-Plane 11 weather plugins safe in X-Plane 12?
Generally not, unless the developer explicitly labels the installed build for X-Plane 12. XP12 changed its cloud, atmosphere and weather systems, so old injectors, shader modifications and Lua weather scripts may do nothing, overwrite unsuitable datarefs or produce broken skies.
