How do you check KATL weather step by step?

The reliable method is to verify the airport and timestamps first, then compare observed weather, forecast changes and precipitation movement.

  1. Search using KATL. Enter the four-letter ICAO identifier KATL, not merely the airline code ATL, and confirm that the result is Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

  3. Match the TAF to your flight time. Check both its issue time and validity period, then locate the prevailing, FM, TEMPO or probability group covering your planned departure or arrival. Use an amended TAF when one has replaced the original.
  4. Run the radar animation. Confirm the image timestamp and watch several frames rather than relying on one picture. Examine precipitation approaching KATL and the departure, arrival or alternate corridors—not just the airport marker.
  5. Recheck near departure. A routine METAR can be well into its reporting interval, while a newer SPECI may record a rapid change. For an actual flight, obtain the required briefing and check ATIS, NOTAMs and operational information as close to departure as applicable.

Where is the temperature in a KATL METAR?

The KATL temperature is the first number in the temperature/dew-point group near the end of the METAR body.

For example, 29/18 means an air temperature of 29°C and a dew point of 18°C. A leading M means minus, so M02/M05 represents −2°C and −5°C. The main group uses whole degrees Celsius; remarks may contain greater precision.

The dew-point spread helps indicate moisture and possible fog or low-cloud development, but it is not a forecast by itself. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, use (°C × 9/5) + 32.

Do not use a morning METAR temperature for an afternoon performance calculation. Obtain a time-specific forecast temperature, then combine it with pressure, runway condition, aircraft weight and the applicable aircraft performance chart procedure. The KATL TAF should not be treated as an hourly temperature forecast.

Which part of the KATL TAF applies to my flight?

The applicable TAF group is the one valid at your planned KATL departure or arrival time, expressed in UTC.

A validity group such as 1512/1618 runs from 1200Z on the 15th until 1800Z on the 16th. A group beginning with FM establishes new prevailing conditions from its stated time, while TEMPO describes temporary fluctuations during a specified interval. Where present, PROB30 identifies a 30% probability rather than prevailing weather.

If your operation falls close to a change boundary, plan for both sets of conditions. A common mistake is reading only the first wind and ceiling group even though an FM group changes them before the estimated arrival time.

What does Atlanta weather radar add to the forecast?

Weather radar shows the recent location, coverage and movement of precipitation around Atlanta, helping you assess whether a TAF thunderstorm or rain forecast is developing as expected.

Use both a regional view and a closer terminal view. KATL itself may be clear while thunderstorms affect a departure gate, arrival route or nearby holding area. Check the radar timestamp, animation direction and whether returns are building, weakening or repeatedly forming over the same corridor.

Radar is not a complete picture of flying conditions. It does not reliably show low cloud, fog, non-precipitating turbulence or all icing, and a mosaic may contain latency, attenuation or ground clutter. Why do KATL weather sources sometimes disagree?

KATL weather products can disagree because they describe different times, locations and types of information.

  • METAR: an observation at the airport at a stated time.
  • TAF: a forecast for conditions in the terminal area over a validity period.
  • Radar: a recent measurement of precipitation, not a forecast and not a direct surface observation.
  • Hourly forecast: modelled values such as temperature, wind or precipitation probability for a future hour.
  • ATIS: operational airport information that includes weather and the runways or approaches in use.

Compare the coded observation or validity times, not the time the page or application was refreshed. Search-result summaries and cached displays are especially risky because an amended TAF or SPECI may already have replaced the value shown.

How should KATL weather affect the flight plan?

Change the plan when time-matched weather threatens aircraft limits, approach minima, fuel assumptions or the safe use of the intended route—not simply because a general forecast icon shows rain.

  • Wind and runways: KATL has five broadly east–west parallel runways. Use the wind to estimate the likely operating direction, but do not assume an exact runway assignment. Review the KATL airport diagram, runway layout and approach charts before choosing performance data or an approach.
  • Ceiling and visibility: compare the applicable TAF groups with approach minima and any alternate requirements imposed by the relevant regulations or operator.

Treat the coded wind as planning information and confirm the actual runway and wind through the appropriate operational source.
