How should I read the KDFW TAF for my flight time?
KDFW normally has a 30-hour TAF issued on the standard UTC forecast cycles and amended when required. Read the group covering your estimated arrival or departure, plus enough time on either side to account for a delay or early arrival.
- Issue time: The first date-time group states when the forecast was prepared; it is not the start of every forecast condition.
- Validity period: This shows when the complete TAF begins and ends. Do not assume it covers a return flight on the following day.
FMgroup: New prevailing conditions begin at the stated time and continue until another group replaces them.TEMPOgroup: Temporary fluctuations are expected during the specified window. These can determine whether an alternate or additional fuel is prudent.- Probability group: This identifies a stated chance of specified conditions rather than guaranteeing that they will occur.
AMD,CORorCNL: These mark an amended, corrected or cancelled forecast. Discard a superseded copy.
A TAF describes conditions within the terminal area, not the whole Dallas–Fort Worth region. Thunderstorms outside the airport forecast area may still disrupt departure gates, arrival routes or ground operations.
How do UTC times convert at KDFW?
METARs, TAFs and aviation advisories use UTC rather than Dallas local time. KDFW is six hours behind UTC during Central Standard Time and five hours behind during Central Daylight Time.
For example, 1800Z is 1200 local during standard time but 1300 local during daylight-saving time. A mistake we see constantly is applying the wrong seasonal offset, which shifts a TAF change group by an hour.
Why can KDFW radar disagree with the METAR or TAF?
Radar, METAR and TAF measure or predict different things, so an apparent disagreement is often valid. Radar may detect precipitation aloft or several miles from KDFW while the airport observation still reports no surface rain; the TAF may forecast a later storm period that has not arrived.
Use an animated loop and check its timestamp. Radar imagery has processing and distribution delay, heavy precipitation can hide returns beyond it, and weak returns do not prove an area is safe for flight. When should KDFW weather be updated?
Check it during initial planning, again before departure, and once more before the arrival or approach decision. Refresh sooner when thunderstorms, fronts, low ceilings, strong winds or rapidly changing pressure are present, because a SPECI or amended TAF can alter the plan between routine products.
