Configure touchscreen monitors for Microsoft Flight Simulator, including Windows touch mapping, instrument pop-outs, placement and common fixes.
On a Windows PC, connect each touchscreen by video and USB, set Windows to Extend these displays, map touch input to the correct screen, then pop supported Microsoft Flight Simulator instruments or toolbar panels into separate windows and move them across. Touch does not turn the entire cockpit into a native multi-touch interface.
Configure the touchscreen in Windows first
Windows must recognise the monitor twice: once as a display and once as a touch-input device. An HDMI or DisplayPort cable normally carries only the picture, so most monitors also require a USB upstream cable. A suitable USB-C connection may carry both.
- Connect every display and USB touch cable. Confirm that Windows shows an image on each monitor and responds when you touch it. A charging-only USB cable will not carry touch data.
- Extend the desktop. Open Windows Display settings, select Extend these displays, then use Identify and arrange the numbered screens to match their physical positions. Do not use Duplicate if each screen will hold different instruments.
- Set resolution and scaling. Use each panel's native resolution. Mixed scaling can work, but starting with the same scaling percentage on adjacent displays makes window placement and pointer movement easier to diagnose.
- Map touch to the correct monitor. Search Windows for Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input, open the matching Control Panel tool and choose Setup. Press
Enterto skip each non-touch display, then tap the touchscreen when instructed. - Calibrate only if taps remain inaccurate. Set the screen's final orientation and scaling before calibrating. Recalibrate after rotating a portrait display.
A mistake we see constantly is setting the touchscreen as the primary monitor and assuming that maps its touch input. Display assignment and touch assignment are separate Windows settings.
How do I put MSFS instruments on the touchscreen?
Load an aircraft, power its avionics and detach each supported display from the virtual cockpit.
- Find an active instrument screen. PFDs, MFDs, navigation displays and some GPS units are common candidates, although support depends on the aircraft.
- Use the default pop-out command. Hold
Right Altand left-click the display surface when the pop-out indicator appears. Click the screen itself, not its surrounding bezel. - Move the new window. Drag it by its Windows title bar onto the touchscreen, then resize or maximise it as required. If it opens off-screen, activate it and use
Windows+Shift+Arrowto move it between monitors. - Test touch input. Tap several controls and verify that the pointer appears on the same screen. If it jumps to another monitor, repeat the Windows touch-mapping procedure.

Which touchscreen layout should I use?
Use instrument pop-outs for a PFD, MFD or GPS, and reserve additional rendered views for larger outside-view monitors.

For a compact home cockpit, a common arrangement is the main outside view above and one or two smaller touchscreens below. Match that physical arrangement in Windows so windows and the mouse pointer move across the correct edges.
Why does the touchscreen control the wrong monitor?
The touch device is mapped to the wrong display in Windows, even if the desktop picture appears on the intended monitor.
- Run the Windows pen-and-touch Setup process again and press
Enteron every screen that is not touch-enabled. - Delete an old calibration before creating a new one, especially after changing ports, display order or orientation.
- Check that each monitor's USB data cable is connected to the PC rather than only to a charger or hub with no data connection.
- Use native resolution and check Windows scaling if taps are consistently offset from the visible control.
Why will an instrument not pop out?
The instrument must support pop-out windows, and its display surface normally needs to be active. Turn on the aircraft's battery, avionics and display units, click the illuminated screen rather than the bezel, and check the relevant control binding if Right Alt has been reassigned.
Some aircraft systems simply do not expose a detachable display. Touchscreen hardware cannot change that limitation.
Why is the popped-out avionics window black?
A black window can result from an unpowered aircraft display, an unsupported panel, a graphics or focus fault, or a window that failed while being created. Work through our diagnostic checklist for black or unresponsive avionics before rebuilding the monitor layout.
How do I keep touchscreen panels in the same place?
Microsoft Flight Simulator does not always restore every pop-out's size and position reliably between sessions. Connect and wake all monitors before starting the simulator, keep the same Windows display arrangement and avoid swapping video ports once the layout works.
For a permanent cockpit, you can save and restore instrument-window positions with a panel manager. This is especially useful when several PFD, MFD and navigation windows must reopen on different touchscreens.
What touchscreen limitations should I expect?
MSFS touch interaction generally behaves like single-pointer mouse input rather than a purpose-built multi-touch cockpit.
- Rotary knobs can be awkward: a touchscreen has no scroll wheel, and small drag targets are less precise than a mouse or physical encoder.
- Windows focus can change: tapping a detached panel may direct keyboard commands to that window. If the simulator pauses when focus changes, disable its pause-on-task-switch or focus-loss option where available.
- Pop-outs reduce performance: use only the displays you need. Lowering the glass-cockpit display refresh setting can help where that option is provided.
- Support varies by aircraft: one aircraft may expose both primary displays while another exposes only a navigation screen or none at all.
Can touchscreen monitors be configured on Xbox or PlayStation?
No—the practical multi-monitor touchscreen workflow is for the Windows PC versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Console versions do not expose the Windows extended-desktop, touch-mapping and movable pop-out-window system required for this type of home-cockpit configuration.
