Find why MSFS Map Enhancement crashes Microsoft Flight Simulator and fix version conflicts, bad caches, network interception and memory pressure.
MSFS Map Enhancement usually crashes Microsoft Flight Simulator because its imagery redirection is incompatible, stale cache or network state is being reused, another map tool is competing with it, or the extra streaming load exposes memory instability. Test the identical flight with the utility fully stopped, then update, reset, isolate and retest.
What causes Map Enhancement to crash MSFS?
The usual cause is a conflict in the chain between Microsoft Flight Simulator, the utility's local imagery redirection and the selected image server. Map Enhancement can trigger the crash without being the underlying fault; extra network, memory or GPU load may expose an unstable driver or add-on.
- Incompatible software: the installed utility build or selected profile does not support the installed MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 build.
- Stale cache or redirection: cached tiles, DNS state or a previous session's network changes are being reused.
- Competing tools: another map injector, old hosts-file entry, VPN, proxy, DNS filter or security product is intercepting the same request.
- Source-specific trouble: one imagery source returns unusable data, times out or leaves corrupt files in the utility cache.
- Resource pressure: high terrain detail, photogrammetry and large textures exhaust available RAM, VRAM or Windows commit memory while new tiles are processed.
- An unrelated add-on: a Community aircraft, scenery package, avionics module or background utility crashes MSFS at the same point.
A message such as Access remote image server normally indicates a source, firewall, VPN or DNS problem rather than an MSFS crash. Use our remote-image-server connection checks before reinstalling the simulator.

How do I stop MSFS Map Enhancement crashing the simulator?
- Create a repeatable baseline. Load a stock aircraft at a stock airport with fixed weather and no live traffic. Repeat the same flight after each change; changing aircraft, location and settings together makes the result meaningless.
- Stop Map Enhancement completely. Use its own stop or restore control so it can remove its network redirection, then close any tray or background process and restart Windows. If MSFS still crashes, follow our clean MSFS crash-isolation sequence instead of treating the map utility as the cause.
- Check the simulator edition and compatibility. Install a utility build intended for the installed MSFS version and select the correct MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 mode. If crashes began immediately after a simulator update, leave Map Enhancement disabled until its build explicitly supports that update; repeated simulator repairs will not fix an incompatible interceptor.
- Use the correct startup order. Configure one imagery source and start the utility's redirection before MSFS requests terrain tiles. Do not switch providers repeatedly during a flight. Our Map Enhancement setup and startup checklist covers the settings and ordering that commonly cause trouble.
- Reset both cache layers safely. Close MSFS, clear the utility's image cache through its own controls, then disable and delete the MSFS Rolling Cache through the simulator's Data settings. Leave Rolling Cache disabled during testing; recreate it only after several stable flights.
- Remove competing network interception. Run only one map replacement tool. Restore changes left by older tools, pause VPN or proxy software for the test, and permit Map Enhancement's local connection through the firewall. Do not permanently disable security software or delete unidentified hosts-file entries.
- Test without Community content. Temporarily empty the Community folder and use a default aircraft. If that fixes the crash, return packages in batches until it reappears; our scenery conflict isolation method explains the quickest way to identify the package involved.
- Reduce memory pressure. Temporarily lower Terrain Level of Detail, Object Level of Detail and texture resolution, turn off photogrammetry for one comparison, and close memory-heavy background applications. Keep the Windows page file system-managed rather than disabling it.
- Reinstall the utility cleanly. Stop its redirection before uninstalling, restart Windows, remove only cache or configuration data identified as belonging to Map Enhancement, and install a compatible clean copy. Confirm that security software has not quarantined one of its components.
Should I clear the Map Enhancement cache or Rolling Cache?
Clear the Map Enhancement cache first when the crash follows a provider change, occurs in one location or begins after an interrupted download. Clear the MSFS Rolling Cache as well when default imagery remains corrupt or the simulator may be reusing tiles captured under the previous redirection.
Do not delete the simulator's package folders, aircraft or scenery as a substitute for clearing Rolling Cache. Also avoid carrying caches between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 or between different imagery sources.
What if MSFS still crashes with Map Enhancement disabled?
If the identical scenario crashes after Map Enhancement has been stopped, its network changes restored and Windows restarted, the utility is not the primary cause. Check Community packages, aircraft modules, GPU drivers, overclocks, available memory and damaged simulator content.
Windows Reliability Monitor can show which process failed first, but an entry naming the simulator executable alone does not prove the cause. A repeatable tool-on versus tool-off test is stronger evidence than a single crash record.
MSFS Map Enhancement is a Windows PC utility. These fixes do not apply to Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, where external imagery-interception utilities cannot be installed.
