How do I fix MSFS VR errors?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix MSFS VR errors with an OpenXR, headset detection, black-screen, crash and stutter checklist for Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024.

Most Microsoft Flight Simulator VR errors are fixed by confirming PC VR support, selecting the correct active OpenXR runtime, starting the headset software before MSFS, disabling overlays and Community add-ons, then reducing VR resolution and testing again. Diagnose detection, black-screen, crash and stutter faults separately; they rarely share one universal fix.

What should I check before changing MSFS settings?

Confirm that the platform and headset can provide VR before changing simulator settings.

  1. Check platform support. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 support OpenXR VR on PC. Xbox consoles do not support MSFS VR. MSFS 2020 was never released on PlayStation; MSFS 2024 is available on PS5, but PSVR2 support requires the free 2026 update to be installed.
  2. Test the headset outside MSFS. Its own home environment or test application must display correctly and track head movement. If that fails, repair the headset connection, software or tracking first.
  3. Select one OpenXR runtime. Make the runtime supplied by the headset platform—such as the Quest, SteamVR or vendor software—the active OpenXR runtime. Installing several runtimes is normal, but switching between them without restarting can leave MSFS connected to the wrong one.
  4. Use a clean launch order. Connect and wake the headset, start its platform software, confirm tracking, launch MSFS in 2D, load a simple flight and then invoke Toggle VR Mode.
  5. Verify the control binding. Search the simulator's control settings for Toggle VR Mode and assign it explicitly. Imported profiles and updates can leave the command unbound or create conflicting assignments.

A Windows Mixed Reality headset also depends on Windows still supporting its required runtime. No setting inside MSFS can replace headset software that has been removed or is no longer supported by the installed operating system.

Which type of MSFS VR error do I have?

The point at which VR fails usually identifies the faulty layer more accurately than the wording of a generic error message.

How do I fix OpenXR and headset detection errors?

Rebuild the connection from the headset to MSFS with only one runtime and no optional API layers active.

  1. Close everything. Exit MSFS, the headset application, SteamVR if used, performance overlays and recording utilities. Restarting only the simulator may leave the failed VR process running.
  2. Reconnect the headset. For a wired headset, reseat the display and USB connections without using an unpowered hub. For a wireless headset, test a cable connection if supported; this separates network trouble from an MSFS fault.
  3. Activate the intended runtime. Use the OpenXR setting inside the headset platform software. Do not repeatedly switch runtimes while MSFS is open.
  4. Disable optional layers. Turn off OpenXR extensions, toolkits, overlays, frame counters, colour filters and recording hooks. They can be restored individually after basic VR works.
  5. Test outside the simulator. If the headset platform cannot render its own environment, stop troubleshooting MSFS and repair the headset installation or connection.
  6. Start MSFS last. Load a default aircraft at an uncomplicated airport before enabling VR.

For errors such as “No headset detected” or a VR command that appears to do nothing, use our more focused headset detection and OpenXR checks.

Why does MSFS go black or crash when entering VR?

A black screen or crash during the switch to VR usually means the renderer failed while creating the second view, allocating graphics memory or handing control to OpenXR.

  1. Remove third-party content. Move everything out of the Community folder and use Safe Mode if MSFS offers it after a crash. Temporarily disable third-party Marketplace packages through the simulator's content-management screen as well.
  2. Turn off overlays and injectors. Disable GPU overlays, recording tools, frame counters, post-processing injectors and optional OpenXR utilities. An overlay that works in 2D can still fail when VR creates additional render surfaces.
  3. Use a simple baseline. Test a default aircraft, clear weather and a quiet airport. Complex glass cockpits, detailed scenery and live traffic make poor diagnostic loads.
  4. Lower graphics-memory demand. Reduce VR render scaling and texture quality before entering VR. Close browsers and other GPU-accelerated programs.
  5. Test another graphics API only when offered. If that MSFS version exposes more than one DirectX mode, switch modes and restart the simulator. Do not copy a DirectX fix from MSFS 2020 into a build of MSFS 2024 that does not offer the same option.
  6. Address driver timing. If the fault began immediately after a graphics-driver change, perform a clean installation or return to the last known working driver rather than changing ten simulator settings at once.

If the desktop mirror remains active while only the headset is dark, follow the VR black-screen diagnosis by display layer. If MSFS closes or returns to the desktop during the mode switch, work through the VR transition crash fixes instead.

Are VR stutters actually an error?

Stuttering without an error message is usually a performance or tracking problem, not a broken VR installation.

  • If the headset home environment also jumps when you move your head, check tracking cameras, room lighting and the headset connection.
  • If performance collapses around detailed airports or traffic but improves when looking at the sky, lower terrain and object detail plus traffic settings; that pattern is commonly CPU-limited.
  • If reducing VR render scaling immediately helps, the GPU was overloaded. Texture reductions help when graphics memory is the limit.
  • If objects develop doubled edges during head movement, test motion reprojection separately and target a stable frame rate rather than the highest visual settings.

A mistake we see constantly is changing render scaling, upscaling, refresh rate and reprojection together. Change one control, repeat the same flight and keep only the changes that improve frame timing. Our MSFS 2024 VR stutter and jitter procedure covers that performance branch in detail.

Should I reset or reinstall MSFS?

Reinstalling Microsoft Flight Simulator should be the last step because most VR errors occur in the headset runtime, graphics driver, add-on layer or configuration rather than the simulator's large content packages.

  1. Restore the VR graphics preset to a conservative default and test before rebuilding a custom profile.
  2. Clear the graphics shader cache after a driver change, accepting that the first flight may stutter while shaders are rebuilt.
  3. Repair the headset platform and OpenXR runtime before repairing MSFS.
  4. Use the game platform's repair function only after backing up local control profiles, configuration files and add-on locations. Avoid a full application reset unless you understand which local packages it may remove.
  5. Reinstall the simulator last. Reinstalling MSFS will not fix an unsupported console, failed headset connection or incorrectly selected OpenXR runtime.

After every change, repeat the same default-aircraft test and record whether the headset was detected, whether the desktop mirror continued rendering and whether failure occurred before or after Toggle VR Mode. Those three observations identify the responsible layer far faster than applying unrelated VR tweaks.
