Why is distant scenery blurry with MSFS Map Enhancement?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix blurry distant scenery with MSFS Map Enhancement by checking Terrain LOD, High LOD, imagery sources, streaming, cache and blocked tile requests.

Distant scenery can remain blurry with MSFS Map Enhancement because the add-on replaces streamed aerial-image tiles; it does not override Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s terrain LOD, mipmapping or tile-loading distance. Low-resolution horizon tiles are normal. Blur that persists as you approach usually indicates delayed or blocked downloads, weak source imagery or stale cache data.

These checks apply to the PC version because Map Enhancement is an external Windows utility. It changes the ground imagery layer, not the elevation mesh, photogrammetry buildings, autogen, weather or the simulator’s fundamental LOD system.

Which kind of blur are you seeing?

The way the blur behaves usually identifies whether Map Enhancement, MSFS 2024 or the imagery source is responsible.

How do I fix blurry distant scenery in MSFS 2024?

Use one location and one aircraft for testing, then change one setting at a time so that provider quality, caching and LOD are not confused with each other.

  1. Confirm Map Enhancement is active. For a clean test, close Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, select the required imagery source in Map Enhancement, start its map service and then launch the simulator. Our Map Enhancement setup and startup guide covers the correct order and cache controls.
  2. Keep online world-data streaming enabled. Map Enhancement substitutes imagery requested through MSFS’s online scenery system; it does not turn the simulator into an offline scenery installation. Disabling online world data can produce generic, low-detail terrain.
  3. Compare another imagery source. Reload the same area after changing source. If one source is sharp and another remains blurred, the limiting factor is coverage, source resolution or response speed rather than the simulator’s graphics settings.
  4. Raise Terrain LOD carefully. Terrain LOD affects how far MSFS maintains terrain detail. Object LOD does not sharpen aerial photography. Avoid pushing Terrain LOD and High LOD straight to their maximum values because the extra requests can create a streaming backlog and make the result worse.
  5. Test the caches. Close the simulator and clear Map Enhancement’s cache through the utility’s own controls. If old tile boundaries or the same blurry areas remain, temporarily disable the MSFS rolling cache; recreate it if that removes the problem. Change one cache at a time.
  6. Check for blocked requests. An Access remote image server message points to the selected provider, firewall, VPN, proxy or cached network configuration—not Terrain LOD. Follow our remote imagery request diagnostics before changing graphics settings.
  7. Reduce demand if tiles arrive late. Lower High LOD or Terrain LOD, remove an accidental simulator bandwidth limit and pause other large downloads. If scenery sharpens only after circling or pausing, use our slow scenery-streaming fixes to check bandwidth, VRAM pressure, storage and rolling-cache problems.

Should I enable High LOD in MSFS Map Enhancement?

Enable High LOD only when ordinary tiles load reliably and nearby ground is sharp but distant imagery is softer than expected.

  • Test High LOD when the connection has spare capacity, tiles load without gaps and the source contains detailed imagery for the area.
  • Leave it disabled when scenery arrives late, blank patches appear, requests fail or stutters increase. Asking for more detailed tiles cannot help if the existing queue is already falling behind.
  • Change imagery source when the ground remains low-resolution even directly beneath the aircraft. High LOD cannot create detail missing from the provider’s original photography.

A useful diagnosis is: sharp nearby and soft far away usually means LOD; soft everywhere usually means the source, cache or failed requests; isolated blurry patches usually mean streaming cannot keep pace.

Why are buildings still blurry when the ground is sharp?

Map Enhancement affects aerial ground textures, not Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s building models or photogrammetry. If roads and fields are crisp but buildings look melted or appear late, check photogrammetry streaming, Object LOD and available bandwidth rather than changing the Map Enhancement imagery source.
