Yes. For general PC flight simulation, most simulators can be flown using only a keyboard, including Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX and FlightGear. A keyboard is adequate for cockpit setup, cruising and basic flights, but digital key presses make smooth pitch, roll, yaw, trim and throttle inputs—especially during take-off and landing—much harder.
There is a distinction between flying the aircraft and operating everything aboard it. Basic flight controls are usually bindable, but a complex or third-party aircraft may have switches that work only through its clickable cockpit. A strictly keyboard-only cold-and-dark flight is therefore not guaranteed.
Can you complete a full flight with only a keyboard?
A full keyboard-only flight is possible in a default aircraft when all the required controls have key assignments. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, FSX, Prepar3D, X-Plane and FlightGear all provide keyboard commands on PC, although their defaults and handling behaviour differ.

How do you set up keyboard-only flight controls?
A usable keyboard-only setup depends more on sensible bindings and technique than on memorising every default key.
- Start with a forgiving aircraft. Load a stable trainer with its engine running, calm weather and a long runway. This removes system operation and crosswind correction while you learn the controls.
- Create a separate keyboard profile. Search the simulator's control settings by function rather than copying a key list from another version. Defaults can change, and custom profiles may override them.
- Bind the essentials. Assign pitch, roll, yaw, throttle increase and decrease, elevator trim, wheel brakes, parking brake, flaps, landing gear, view reset and pause. Add a centre-controls command if the simulator provides one.
- Choose incremental commands. A keyboard cannot provide a true analogue axis. Bind throttle increase and decrease rather than relying only on commands that jump directly to idle or full power.
- Use short taps. Holding a pitch or roll key can drive the control towards full deflection. Tap, observe the aircraft's response, then tap again instead of making one long correction.
- Trim the aircraft. Once the speed and attitude are stable, adjust elevator trim until fewer pitch inputs are needed. Use auto-rudder or take-off assistance if ground steering is too abrupt.
- Make landing easier. Practise a long, straight approach in calm weather, establish the landing configuration early and adjust power in small steps. Keyboard-only landings become much harder when large corrections are left until the flare.
Why does keyboard flying feel jerky or unresponsive?
Keyboard flying feels jerky because each key supplies an on-or-off command rather than a continuously variable position. Several other problems can make that behaviour worse:
- Keys do nothing: check that the simulator window has focus, the flight is not paused, no text-entry field is active and the correct keyboard profile is loaded.
- Numeric keypad commands fail: verify the Num Lock state. On a laptop without a separate keypad, remap those functions to ordinary keys rather than relying on an embedded function layer.
- The aircraft keeps banking or pitching: some simulators move the virtual control progressively instead of centring it when the key is released. Use the centre command, apply a brief opposite input or inspect any connected controller for drift.
- Sensitivity changes have no effect: ordinary axis sensitivity curves often do not alter digital keyboard commands. Use a simulator-specific keyboard response setting if one exists; otherwise rely on shorter taps, trim and assistance options.
- The throttle jumps between extremes: the wrong command is probably assigned. Replace fixed-percentage or full-power commands with incremental increase and decrease controls.
- The aircraft swerves during take-off: use rudder or nose-wheel steering rather than aileron. Auto-rudder is a reasonable compromise when no analogue yaw control is available.
When should you buy a joystick or gamepad?
Keep using the keyboard if your focus is cockpit procedures, radio navigation, cruise flight or autopilot operation. Choose a gamepad when compact analogue control matters; choose a joystick for regular manual flying, crosswind landings, aerobatics or helicopters.
