Learn to fly the FlyByWire A380X in MSFS, from cockpit setup and FMS programming to take-off, managed flight, approach, landing and common fixes.
To fly the FlyByWire A380X in Microsoft Flight Simulator, configure a four-engine control profile, load fuel and payload through its EFB, programme the route and performance data in the MFD-based FMS, start all four engines, and use Airbus managed modes while confirming every change on the Flight Mode Annunciator.
What do you need before flying the A380X?
The FlyByWire A380X must be installed in the correct PC Community folder for MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024; this Community add-on cannot be installed on Xbox or PlayStation. If the aircraft is missing or loads with broken systems, follow our installer and Community-folder checks for the A380X before troubleshooting the cockpit.
Create an aircraft-specific controller profile rather than reusing one made for a twin-engine Airbus. Calibrate idle, CL, FLEX/MCT, TOGA and reverse detents, then check brakes and nosewheel steering. Our four-engine throttle, detent and steering setup covers single-, dual- and four-lever hardware.
For an easier first attempt, use clear daylight weather, a long runway and a moderate payload. Disable any piloting assistance that moves the throttles, trims the aircraft or handles take-off automatically.
How do I set up and start the A380X?
A cold-and-dark A380X is prepared through the overhead panel, EFB and MFD-based flight-management system before its four engines are started.
- Establish electrical power. Turn on the required battery switches and connect available external power. Airbus panels follow a dark-cockpit philosophy: an extinguished pushbutton often means the system is operating normally, so do not switch every unlit button.
- Align the navigation system. Set the inertial-reference selectors to NAV and allow alignment to complete. Electrical power can bring the screens alive immediately, but the navigation display and managed guidance will not be fully usable until alignment and position initialisation are complete.
- Load fuel and payload. Set passengers, cargo and fuel through the aircraft's EFB and apply the load. Enter or transfer the resulting zero-fuel weight, centre of gravity and block fuel where the FMS requests them. Changing the native MSFS weight-and-balance screen afterwards can invalidate the performance figures.
- Programme the flight. Enter the origin, destination, runway, departure, route, cruise level and arrival. Importing an operational plan is quicker; our guide to connecting SimBrief and transferring a route into the A380X explains the required account identifier and import process.
- Complete take-off performance. Select the intended runway and flap configuration, then calculate V1, VR, V2 and either a FLEX temperature or TOGA take-off. Do not copy speeds from another flight: runway, weather, mass and configuration all matter. Use our walkthrough for calculating and entering A380X take-off data if the speed fields remain blank.
- Start the APU. Select the APU master and start controls, wait for the APU-available indication and ensure APU bleed is supplying pneumatic pressure. Close doors, remove ground equipment, set the parking brake and switch on the beacon before engine start.
- Start all four engines. Put the engine-start selector in its start position and move each engine master to ON, allowing the engine indication to stabilise before continuing. Confirm that engines 1 through 4 show normal indications, then return the start selector to its normal position and disconnect external power when appropriate.
- Prepare for taxi. Check the flight controls, set take-off flaps and trim from the calculated data, arm the spoilers, select the required take-off autobrake mode and run the take-off configuration check. Resolve every red warning rather than assuming it will disappear on the runway.
Programming the route on the A380X MFD
The A380X uses its Multi-Function Displays and Keyboard and Cursor Control Units for flight-management work rather than the conventional MCDU found in older Airbus tutorials. Confirm that the active flight plan contains the intended departure, en-route legs, arrival and approach.
A route selected on the MSFS World Map does not guarantee that every procedure will populate correctly in the FlyByWire FMS. Check the lateral plan for gaps and the vertical plan for altitude constraints. Do not automatically delete a MANUAL or vector discontinuity: it may represent an intentional radar-vector segment rather than a broken route.
Taxi and take-off
Taxi the A380X slowly, using a properly bound tiller or nosewheel-steering axis and only enough thrust to start it rolling.
The cockpit sits well ahead of the nose gear, so the flight deck must pass slightly beyond a taxiway centreline before a tight turn begins. Once moving, idle thrust may be sufficient. Avoid holding high thrust against the brakes, and verify that an inverted brake axis is not applying continuous braking.
- Line up and verify the modes. Check the runway, flight directors, autothrust status, transponder, exterior lights and take-off configuration. The PFD should be ready to command the planned departure.
- Set take-off thrust. Stabilise the engines at intermediate thrust, then move the levers positively into FLEX/MCT when valid FLEX data are entered, or TOGA when full thrust is required. Confirm the commanded thrust and SRS guidance on the Flight Mode Annunciator.
- Rotate at VR. Apply a smooth rotation towards the flight-director command rather than hauling the nose up. After a positive climb indication, retract the landing gear.
- Reduce to climb thrust. When
LVR CLBappears, move the thrust levers back to the CL detent, not to idle. Autothrust then controls engine output while the physical levers remain in CL. - Clean up the aircraft. Retract flaps in stages using the displayed speed cues. Engage the autopilot once the aircraft is stable, if desired, and verify that NAV and CLB or the intended selected modes appear on the FMA.
How do Airbus managed modes work in the A380X?
Airbus managed modes let the FMS command speed, lateral navigation and vertical guidance, while selected modes let the pilot command a specific value through the Flight Control Unit.
Conceptually, push selects managed mode and pull selects a pilot-selected mode. The exact mouse gesture depends on the MSFS cockpit-interaction setting, so use the FMA at the top of the PFD as the final authority.

If the A380X refuses to follow NAV, the usual causes are a flight-plan discontinuity, a selected heading mode or an active leg that the aircraft cannot intercept. Use selected heading to establish a sensible intercept, then re-engage managed NAV and confirm the FMA change.
Descent, approach and landing
Programme the arrival before the top of descent, including the STAR, approach, transition, barometric setting, wind, temperature, minima and planned landing configuration.
Select the cleared lower altitude and command managed descent near the calculated descent point. If the FMA shows OP DES, the aircraft is descending in an open mode and will not honour the FMS altitude constraints. Monitor speed throughout; use speed brakes when genuinely required, then retract them before final configuration.
- Verify the approach. Check the runway, approach course, missed-approach routing and any remaining discontinuities. For an ILS, display the landing-system scales and confirm that the correct localiser and glide path are being received.
- Arm approach guidance. Select APPR when cleared and positioned to intercept. Watch for localiser and glide-path capture on the FMA; pressing APPR does not by itself mean the aircraft is established or capable of completing an automatic landing.
- Configure in stages. Extend flaps without exceeding their displayed limits, lower the landing gear, arm the ground spoilers, select the required landing autobrake mode and complete the landing checklist.
- Land manually or monitor autoland. For a manual landing, disconnect the autopilot when stable, follow the flight-director or visual path and make a small, controlled flare. At the
RETARDcall, move all thrust levers to idle. - Decelerate. Select reverse after touchdown and monitor spoiler and autobrake deployment. Only the two inboard engines have reverse thrust on the A380; the lack of reverse on engines 1 and 4 is correct, not a fault. Stow reverse as speed falls and take manual braking for the runway exit.
Why won't the FlyByWire A380X fly correctly?
Most A380X problems come from incomplete cockpit preparation, mismatched throttle calibration or assuming that the World Map has fully programmed the aircraft.
- The engines will not start: confirm usable fuel, fuel-pump configuration, APU availability, pneumatic bleed pressure, the engine-start selector and each engine master. Also remove any duplicated or obsolete A380X package from the Community folder.
- The thrust mode is wrong: recalibrate the detents and confirm that the on-screen levers reach CL, FLEX/MCT and TOGA cleanly. A lever sitting between detents can prevent the expected autothrust mode.
- The aircraft ignores the route: inspect the active leg, discontinuities and FMA. A completed import does not guarantee that NAV is engaged.
- A take-off configuration warning remains: compare flaps, trim, spoilers, brakes and take-off data with the checklist. Do not depart with the warning active.
- The aircraft will not move or pulls sideways: remove chocks, release the parking brake and inspect brake, rudder and tiller axes for duplicate or inverted assignments.
- Navigation displays remain incomplete: check electrical power and inertial alignment. The screens being illuminated does not mean that navigation alignment has finished.
A sensible first A380X practice flight
Use a runway start when learning basic handling and managed modes; use a gate start when practising the complete electrical, loading and engine-start sequence.
Choose two airports with long runways, an uncomplicated departure and an ILS arrival. Calm weather and daylight let you concentrate on throttle detents, the FMA and energy management. Once that flight is repeatable, add live weather, more complex procedures and heavier loading one element at a time.
