Why are there deep terrain holes in FS2004 scenery?

Deep terrain holes or pits in FS2004 usually come from a faulty terrain-mesh BGL, an unfilled elevation-data void, or a conflict between add-on mesh and an airport flatten/elevation file. Ground textures rarely cause them. Disable the newest mesh or airport scenery, restart FS2004, and re-enable packages individually to identify the offending file.

What causes deep pits in FS2004 terrain?

A malformed elevation sample in terrain mesh is the usual cause of a narrow, extremely deep pit away from an airport. Corrupted or poorly compiled mesh can interpret missing elevation data as a very low point, producing a hole, trench or sharp downward spike.

How do I find the BGL causing the terrain hole?

The fastest reliable test is to disable add-on scenery in groups until the terrain returns to normal.

  1. Record the exact location. Note the coordinates or nearest airport and confirm that the hole appears there consistently with more than one aircraft.
  2. Back up the configuration. Keep a copy of scenery.cfg and do not delete any BGL files while diagnosing the problem.
  3. Disable recent scenery. Untick the newest regional mesh, airport or terrain packages in the FS2004 Scenery Library, restart the simulator and revisit the same location.
  4. Test groups rather than every layer. If many add-ons are active, disable half of the suspected layers. Repeat with the affected half until one package remains.
  5. Quarantine individual files if necessary. With FS2004 closed, move suspect .bgl files to a temporary folder outside every active scenery directory. Keep companion airport and flatten files together unless the package documentation clearly identifies them.
  6. Replace or remove the faulty component. Restore a clean copy from the original archive, remove an obsolete duplicate, or leave the incompatible package disabled.

A mistake we see constantly is moving a mesh layer up and down the Scenery Library and assuming priority will override it. FS2004 generally selects the most detailed available mesh for a location, so changing layer order may not suppress a malformed high-detail mesh. Disabling or replacing that mesh is the dependable test.

Why does the terrain hole appear only near one airport?

A pit, cliff or sunken airport confined to one airfield normally indicates an airport-elevation or flatten conflict rather than defective regional mesh.

  • Disable duplicate versions of the same airport, including older airport-facility files left by another package.
  • Keep the airport's supplied flatten or elevation-correction BGL with the matching airport version.
  • Check whether a regional scenery package also modifies that airport.
  • Use the package's specified layer order when one is provided; otherwise test the complete airport above the broader regional scenery.

If the runway surface itself is correctly positioned but only one aeroplane drops through it, use our checks to separate airport-elevation faults from aircraft contact-point faults. Changing mesh will not repair incorrectly positioned aircraft wheels.

Can graphics settings fix an FS2004 terrain pit?

Graphics settings cannot repair bad elevation data. Reducing terrain mesh complexity may hide or soften the defect, but it is only a workaround and can make legitimate terrain less accurate elsewhere.

Texture resolution, autogen density and display resolution do not determine ground elevation. If a hole remains fixed at the same coordinates after restarting FS2004, treat it as a scenery-data problem rather than a graphics-card problem.

What if the hole remains with every add-on disabled?

A terrain hole that survives a full add-on shutdown usually means an external scenery area is still active or a default FS2004 file has been overwritten or damaged.

Check the Scenery Library for folders outside the usual Addon Scenery location, because some installers register mesh elsewhere. If all third-party areas are genuinely disabled, restore altered default files from a known backup or use the original installer’s repair facility. Do not download an unrelated BGL with the same filename or delete default terrain files at random. The decisive test is simple: if removing one add-on makes the fixed-location pit disappear, that package contains the incompatible mesh, flatten or airport-elevation data.
