How does turbulence work in X-Plane 12, and can you adjust it?

What creates turbulence in X-Plane 12?

In X-Plane 12, turbulence is not one master camera-shake effect; several weather variables can disturb the air independently.

  • Wind-layer turbulence introduces irregular changes within a selected layer.
  • Gusts vary the wind speed around its sustained value, often producing repeated surges rather than random bumps.
  • Wind shear changes speed or direction across altitude, so crossing between air masses can cause an abrupt roll, yaw or vertical displacement.
  • Thermals and convection create rising and sinking air, especially around active cloud development and warm terrain.
  • Terrain-related airflow can make conditions rougher near ridges and on the downwind side of high ground.

The flight model responds to these air movements, so the effect is more than visual shaking. A light aircraft with low mass and wing loading normally moves more than a heavy transport in the same air, although aircraft-specific camera effects can exaggerate what the pilot sees.

How do I adjust turbulence in X-Plane 12?

Use manually configured weather when you need direct control over turbulence strength or repeatable conditions for training and testing.

  1. Open the Weather settings. You can do this while configuring the flight or from the weather panel after loading into the simulator.
  2. Select manually configured weather. Choose the manual or custom mode rather than real-world weather. The precise wording and panel arrangement can move between X-Plane 12 updates.
  3. Select the relevant wind layer. Edit the layer covering your aircraft’s altitude and reduce or increase its turbulence control. Check every overlapping layer rather than changing only the surface wind.
  4. Adjust gusts and shear separately. For smoother air, move gust speed closer to sustained wind speed and reduce sharp speed or direction changes between adjacent layers.
  5. Build a clean test condition. Start with one wind layer, no gust spread, minimal shear and stable skies. Add one variable at a time to identify which effect is producing the motion.

You cannot preserve the exact live atmosphere while independently forcing a chosen turbulence level. A practical compromise is to reproduce the broad wind, pressure and cloud conditions manually, then reduce turbulence or gusts. Why is X-Plane 12 still bumpy with turbulence set to zero?

A zero turbulence setting removes only that component; gusts, wind shear, convection, terrain airflow and unintended control inputs can still move the aircraft.

A mistake we see constantly is treating controller noise as weather. Watch the axis indicators without touching the controls; any flickering or movement points to hardware input rather than atmospheric turbulence. Also confirm that real-world weather has not been re-enabled and that you edited the layer at the aircraft’s altitude. Changing surface turbulence will not necessarily smooth a flight taking place thousands of feet above that layer.

Which turbulence setting is realistic?

A realistic setting matches the atmospheric situation rather than using one fixed turbulence percentage for every flight.

Use calm manual weather for control calibration and repeatable procedure practice. Add modest gusts or turbulence for ordinary rough-air training, and reserve strong turbulence, pronounced shear and active convection for conditions that justify them. Setting all three controls high at once creates an extreme atmosphere rather than normal windy weather.

Strong, steady wind can be smooth aloft, while light surface wind can coexist with convective turbulence higher up. Aircraft response matters too: compare flight-path movement rather than cockpit shaking alone, and use the aircraft’s documented rough-air or turbulence-penetration speed where one is provided.
