Where can you listen to live and recorded ATC radio?

You can listen to live and recorded air traffic control radio communications through dedicated aviation-radio streaming and archive services, airport-frequency scanner feeds, or a local air-band receiver. Coverage depends on a receiver near the airport, while local law determines whether receiving, streaming, recording or sharing those transmissions is permitted.

For our Aviation & Real-World Flying readers, the key distinction is that a real-world feed carries radio traffic captured by a physical receiver. It is not the same as built-in simulator ATC or a human-run simulation network.

Where can you hear live or archived ATC?

Dedicated web streams are the easiest option for a distant airport, while a local air-band receiver gives you direct reception where the law allows it.

A receiver for ordinary civil aviation voice traffic must support AM reception across the VHF air band, normally 118.000–136.975 MHz. An FM-only broadcast radio will not receive it correctly. Oceanic, military and some en-route communications may use other bands or data links, so they are less likely to appear on an airport stream.

How do you select the correct airport feed?

Search by the airport's exact ICAO or IATA code, then choose the controller position handling the phase of flight you want to hear.

  1. Confirm the airport. Large cities often have several airports, and searching by city name alone can put you on the wrong feed.
  2. Choose the position. Clearance delivery issues clearances, ground handles taxiing, tower controls the runway area, approach and departure handle terminal traffic, and centre or control works en-route sectors.   3. Check whether frequencies are combined. One stream may scan several channels. The receiver can miss a simultaneous transmission while it is stopped on another frequency.
  4. Follow the hand-off. A departing aircraft may move from ground to tower and then departure within minutes, so one feed rarely contains the complete exchange.
  5. Match the archive clock. Check whether times are shown in UTC or local time. Daylight-saving changes and crossing midnight can place the recording under a different date from the one expected.

ATIS is useful for runway, weather and airport information, but it is normally an automated broadcast rather than a conversation. Why can you hear the controller but not the pilot?

One-sided or incomplete audio usually means the feed receiver can hear one transmitter more strongly than the other, not that the missing party failed to transmit.

  • Receiver location: the controller may transmit from a strong airport antenna while an aircraft is low, distant or screened by terrain.
  • Line-of-sight reception: airborne transmitters are often heard over a wider area than aircraft on the ground, so the reverse problem can also occur.
  • Scanning delay: a feed covering multiple frequencies may join a transmission late, clip its first words or miss it completely.
  • Sector changes: approach and centre sectors can split, combine or use remote transmitter sites, leaving the aircraft on a frequency not covered by that receiver.
  • Quiet or closed facility: silence may simply mean there is no traffic, the tower is closed, or service has transferred to another controller.
  • Feed or browser fault: volunteer receivers can go offline, while browser autoplay restrictions, a muted tab or a stalled player can produce apparent silence.

ATC audio contains only transmissions made on the monitored frequency. It does not include cockpit intercom, telephone coordination between controllers or digital controller-pilot messages.

Can you legally listen to and record ATC?

The legality of receiving ATC radio depends on the country, and permission to listen does not automatically permit recording, rebroadcasting or publishing the communication.

Some jurisdictions allow reception of unencrypted aviation radio but restrict its use or disclosure. Others are stricter: in the UK, ordinary ATC traffic is not intended for general reception, so owning a scanner does not by itself establish that listening is lawful. Check the telecommunications rules applying to both your location and the receiver or stream.

Online availability is not proof that every use is permitted. Streamed audio may also be delayed, incomplete or attached to the wrong time reference, so it must never replace official aeronautical information or be used to make operational flight decisions.

Real-world feeds and simulator ATC are different

A real-world feed adds authentic background radio to a simulator, but its controllers and aircraft cannot see or respond to your simulated flight. FSX users can use our utility for accessing real-world ATC streams inside FSX, subject to feed availability and local law.
