MSFS 2024 mission types explained: cargo, charter, medevac, rescue, firefighting, agricultural and helicopter jobs, plus unlock requirements.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 (MSFS 2024) offers civilian Career missions for ferrying, flightseeing, aerial advertising, skydiving, cargo, private and VIP charter, airline transport, medevac, search and rescue, firefighting, agricultural work and specialist helicopter operations. Certifications, aircraft, reputation and location determine which jobs appear on the mission map.
Which Career Mode missions can you fly?
The repeatable Career roster falls into the following practical mission families. Some contain several tiers or specialisations; our Career Mode breakdown explains how missions, companies and progression fit together.
| Mission family | What the job involves | Typical progression |
|---|---|---|
| Ferry and repositioning | Move an aircraft between airports without carrying passengers or commercial cargo. | Usually among the simpler early fixed-wing jobs. |
| Flightseeing and first flights | Fly passengers around a local scenic route, often passing specified landmarks. | Early general-aviation work where smooth flying matters. |
| Aerial advertising | Tow a banner along a prescribed route and complete the required pickup or release procedure. | Requires the corresponding specialisation and suitable aircraft. |
| Skydiving | Climb to the assigned altitude, reach the drop zone and release parachutists accurately. | Adds time, altitude and positioning requirements. |
| Cargo transport | Carry freight between airports, including remote, light, medium and heavy cargo variants. | Larger jobs require more advanced aircraft qualifications. |
| Private and VIP charter | Transport passengers on executive or private flights, with punctuality and passenger comfort affecting the result. | VIP work appears later than basic passenger flying. |
| Airline transport | Operate scheduled passenger sectors in larger transport aircraft. | A late-stage path requiring advanced licences, ratings and aircraft endorsements. |
| Medevac and air ambulance | Transfer a patient or medical team while balancing speed with a stable flight. | Unlocked through the medical-transport specialisation. |
| Search and rescue | Locate a person, vessel or incident site and complete the required rescue or recovery task. | Includes mountain and rotorcraft-oriented variants. |
| Firefighting | Load or scoop water or retardant, approach the fire and place effective drops. | Aircraft-specific procedures make this one of the more specialised paths; see our guide to loading, dropping and scoring firefighting missions. |
| Agricultural aviation | Apply material over marked fields while maintaining accurate low-level coverage. | Requires disciplined height, speed and turn management. |
| Specialist helicopter work | Carry passengers or sling loads, support construction and perform rescue or cargo tasks in confined areas. | Requires rotorcraft qualifications; sling-load jobs have additional prerequisites. |
Several advertised names are variants rather than separate systems. Remote and industrial transport sit under cargo, air ambulance is medevac, mountain rescue is search and rescue, and executive transport overlaps private or VIP charter. Training lessons and certification checks unlock work but are not paid mission categories themselves.
Why are some MSFS 2024 mission types missing?
Most missing mission types are locked by Career progression or filtered out by aircraft and location requirements.
- Complete the required licences and specialisations. Passing the basic pilot qualification does not unlock every job. Advanced cargo, airline, helicopter and specialist work has its own prerequisites.
- Earn the necessary aircraft endorsements. Turboprops, jets, airliners, helicopters and sling-load operations require the matching qualifications before their jobs become available.
- Distinguish employee work from company work. Employee missions normally provide the aircraft. Freelance jobs require an appropriate company and a compatible, serviceable aircraft that you own.
- Check the mission-map filters and search area. Clear restrictive filters and zoom out. Firefighting, mountain rescue and other specialised work may be concentrated in particular regions or conditions.
- Refresh a stale mission map. If all prerequisites are satisfied, return to the Career hub and reload the simulator after confirming that it is updated. A blank map is not always evidence that a specialisation has failed to unlock.
Are all MSFS 2024 activities Career missions?
Most repeatable commercial and specialist jobs are Career missions, but MSFS 2024 also has separate activity modes.
Free Flight, World Photographer, training, landing challenges and Challenge League events do not use the same mission-map progression or company economy. Our comparison of Career, Free Flight, World Photographer and challenge modes explains where each activity belongs.
Air racing, scientific research, experimental flying, low-altitude operations, glider flying and balloon operations have also appeared within MSFS 2024's broader activity set. Depending on the content, they may be presented as curated scenarios, challenges or aircraft-specific activities rather than permanent procedural Career categories; our overview of the simulator's wider mission and activity design provides that broader context. The native mission roster is civilian and specialist aviation, not armed combat.
Can any aircraft be used for a mission?
No; each mission expects a compatible aircraft class, and Career Mode does not let you substitute any installed aircraft freely.
Employee jobs assign a suitable aircraft. Company jobs depend on what you own, its condition and whether the simulator recognises it as compatible with that mission family. A third-party aircraft may work perfectly in Free Flight yet remain unavailable for Career jobs if it lacks the necessary Career integration.
For unrestricted aircraft choice, recreate the route in Free Flight. The flight can be similar, but Career objectives, reputation, scoring and company income will not carry across.
Which mission type is best for beginners?
Ferry and flightseeing jobs are the clearest starting point because they use familiar general-aviation flying and relatively simple objectives. Choose cargo or charter for structured point-to-point operations, airline transport for systems-heavy flying, and agricultural, firefighting, rescue or sling-load work when you want precise low-level aircraft handling.
