Learn how MSFS 2024 firefighting missions unlock, how to scoop and drop water, what affects scoring, and how to fix missed objectives.
In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, firefighting is a Career Mode specialisation. You fly an assigned water bomber or air tanker to an active fire, make accurate drops over the marked area, refill when required, then return and land. Mission grading rewards both extinguishing the target and safe, disciplined flying.
Where do firefighting missions appear?
Firefighting contracts appear on the Career Mode map after you have met the relevant licence and specialisation requirements. They are not a separate top-level game mode; they sit within the same progression system described in our guide to Career Mode progression and mission types.
Employee missions supply an eligible aircraft, making them the simplest way to begin. Freelance or company contracts can require an appropriate company and an owned aircraft which qualifies for the job. The specialisation panel shows the prerequisites, while our explanation of licences, aircraft eligibility and Career unlocks covers the wider ownership rules.
If no firefighting contracts appear, check that the specialisation is unlocked, clear any restrictive map filters and inspect other regions. Career contracts are generated across the map, so unlocking a job type does not guarantee that one will be positioned beside your present base.
How do you complete a firefighting mission?
- Read the briefing. Identify the fire location, assigned aircraft, extinguishing agent, refill method and expected return point. Do not assume every tanker can scoop water.
- Check the specialist controls. Confirm that water or retardant release and, where applicable, scoop operation are mapped before departure. The precise control labels and default buttons can differ between aircraft and input devices.
- Fly to the marked fire. Arrive with enough height and distance to assess the wind, terrain, smoke and shape of the target rather than descending directly into a hurried first pass.
- Make a stable drop. Approach along the long axis of the target where practical, hold a steady heading and release slightly before the marked area so the liquid falls into it.
- Refill if instructed. A scooping aircraft uses a suitable body of water; a land-based tanker normally returns to the designated reload point. Follow the objective prompt rather than improvising a refill location.
- Finish the objective chain. Extinguishing the visible fire is not always the last step. Follow the return, landing, parking and shutdown instructions until the mission debrief appears.
How do tanker and scooper missions differ?
| Aircraft type | Typical operation | Main handling concern |
|---|---|---|
| Land-based air tanker | Starts with water or retardant and reloads at a designated ground location when another load is required. | A heavy load changes acceleration, climb performance and turn radius. |
| Amphibious scooper | Refills during a controlled run across suitable water, then climbs back towards the fire. | Landing gear position, scoop configuration, water contact and speed must all be correct. |
The Air Tractor AT-802 represents the land-based tanker technique, while the Canadair CL-415 uses the amphibious scooping method. Always follow the assigned aircraft's cockpit indications and mission prompts; the two workflows are not interchangeable.
How do you make an accurate water drop?
An accurate drop begins before reaching the fire: establish a shallow, stable run with the wings level and account for wind drift. The mission marker indicates where the liquid must land, not necessarily the point at which you should press the release control.
- Approach into wind when terrain and the target shape permit, reducing groundspeed and sideways drift.
- Release before the near edge because the water or retardant retains forward momentum as it falls.
- Use one deliberate continuous drop rather than several short bursts scattered around the marker.
- Avoid steep turns immediately after release, especially while carrying part of the load.
- Climb and reposition outside the fire area before setting up another pass.
Dropping too high spreads the load and allows more drift. Flying extremely low leaves little room for terrain, trees, turbulence or a late pull-up. A controlled low pass is more effective than chasing individual flames with abrupt manoeuvres.
Why is my firefighting drop not counting?
A drop usually fails to register because most of the load missed the active mission area, the objective was not yet active or the aircraft was not configured correctly.
- No liquid appears: check the tank quantity, release binding and duplicate controller assignments.
- The stream crosses the fire but progress does not change: lower the release height, correct for crosswind and place more of the load inside the marked zone.
- The fire looks nearly extinguished: inspect the entire target for a remaining active patch before leaving.
- The objective does not advance: make sure the mission is asking for a drop rather than transit, assessment or return to base.
- A scoop run collects nothing: retract amphibious landing gear, deploy the scoops, use the designated water and stabilise the aircraft on the surface within its indicated operating range.
Merely touching the water does not refill a scooper. Keep the wings level, hold a controlled planing attitude, monitor the tank indication and close the scoops before climbing away. If a correctly configured drop repeatedly produces no mission response, retrying the contract may be necessary because the objective trigger can occasionally fail.
What affects the mission score and reward?
The debrief considers mission completion alongside the quality and safety of the flight. Accurate coverage helps, but a collision, uncontrolled water run, excessive manoeuvring near terrain or poor landing can still damage the result.
A mistake we see repeatedly is treating the fire as the only objective. Career missions are scripted from departure through shutdown, so skipping prompts or ending the flight immediately after the final drop can leave the contract incomplete. Preserve enough fuel and time for the return leg.
Can you practise firefighting outside Career Mode?
Free Flight is useful for learning the aircraft, practising water handling and testing control bindings, but it does not reproduce the complete Career contract, generated target and reward sequence. Our overview of MSFS 2024 game modes and activities explains where Free Flight and Career Mode differ.
