How do water runways work in MSFS 2024?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how MSFS 2024 water runways, seaplane bases and water starts work, which aircraft can use them, and how to fix common spawn problems.

In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, a water runway is airport data that defines a usable lane on a lake, river or coast for floatplanes and amphibians. It is not a painted strip. Selecting a defined runway start or water parking position spawns you afloat; suitable aircraft can also land on open water.

What is a water runway in MSFS 2024?

A water runway supplies the simulator with an operating direction, usable area and one or more starting positions on water. It may belong to a dedicated seaplane base or to an airport that has both conventional and water runways.

The runway itself can be completely invisible. Buoys, docks and shoreline buildings are optional scenery objects rather than part of the runway definition. Although its construction examples concern an older simulator, our explanation of how simulator scenery defines water runways and spawn positions shows why visible water alone does not create a selectable runway.

Map selectionWhat it doesBest use
Water runway startPlaces the aircraft afloat and aligned with the defined take-off directionImmediate departure
Water parking or dockPlaces the aircraft at a fixed position, usually near the shoreSetting up before taxiing
Unlisted open waterHas no selectable surface start in the flight plannerFree-flight landings where the water surface works correctly

How do I start on a water runway?

The reliable method is to select a defined water start attached to a recognised seaplane base, rather than choosing an arbitrary patch of blue on the world map.

  1. Select a water-capable aircraft. Use a floatplane, flying boat or amphibian; an ordinary wheeled aircraft cannot operate safely from water.
  2. Find a seaplane base or mixed-use airport. Search for the airport and inspect its available departure positions rather than selecting only the airport icon.
  3. Choose the water position. Pick the water runway start, dock or water parking position. At mixed airports, check that you have not selected a paved runway.
  4. Use calm weather for the first attempt. Strong wind and waves can make the aircraft drift, weathercock or overturn immediately after loading.
  5. Check the aircraft configuration. Amphibious wheel gear must normally be retracted on water. Deploy water rudders for low-speed taxiing if the aircraft has them, then retract them before accelerating for take-off.

Our instructions for selecting a valid seaplane departure point cover the world-map choices and what to do when a location has no usable water spawn.

Which aircraft can use water runways?

Only aircraft modelled for water operations should use a water runway. Suitable types include fixed-float seaplanes, amphibians with retractable wheels and flying boats whose hull forms the main water contact surface.

  • Fixed-float aircraft: operate from water but usually cannot use a normal paved runway unless fitted with appropriate landing gear.
  • Amphibians: can use land or water, but the gear position must match the surface. Gear down on water can cause a violent nose-over.
  • Flying boats: sit on their hull and may use wingtip floats for stability.

A conventional aircraft does not become water-capable because it can be placed near a lake, and a livery cannot add float or hull physics. Add-on aircraft also need correctly modelled contact points and water handling.

Can you land anywhere on the water?

A designated water runway is not required for every free-flight landing, so many broad lakes and coastal areas can be used. However, visible water does not guarantee a safe physical surface or enough room for a departure.

Small ponds, narrow rivers, uneven water masks, shallow shorelines, bridges and scenery objects can cause collisions or leave the aircraft stranded. Wind and wave state matter as well: a location that works in calm conditions may be unsafe in rough weather. Landing there does not create an airport or make that spot available as a future surface start.

For handling technique, including step taxiing, water-rudder use, wind correction and amphibious gear checks, use our practical seaplane take-off and landing guide.

Do water runways work with ATC and flight plans?

A recognised seaplane base can be selected as a flight-plan departure or destination, but ATC and ground guidance depend on the airport data supplied with that location. Water airports often have less detailed taxi routing and fewer instructions than major land airports.

Do not expect centreline paint, threshold markings or hold-short lines. Use the runway alignment shown in the planner or avionics, account for wind, and check the path ahead for boats, docks, terrain and other scenery. Missions may also require the assigned water landing area even when another nearby lake is physically usable.

Why is my water runway not working?

  • The aircraft starts on land or against a bank: the selected position may be a land runway, or the scenery's water start may be poorly placed. Choose another listed water position.
  • The aircraft flips or noses over: check amphibious gear position first. Excessive speed, rough water and strong crosswinds are the other common causes.
  • The aircraft will not steer: deploy its water rudders if fitted and apply gentle power. Multi-engine seaplanes may also use differential thrust. If the binding works in one aircraft but not another, check your per-aircraft control profile and active device preset.
  • The runway is invisible: that is usually normal. A water runway is a data-defined operating lane, not a texture painted on the surface.
  • No water start appears: the location may be visual scenery only, without a defined runway or parking point. Use another seaplane base or scenery that explicitly supplies water starts.
  • The aircraft will not accelerate: retract water rudders when appropriate, reduce weight, turn into wind and avoid trying to take off through steep waves or confined water.
