MSFS 2024 does not have a separate “DLSS 5” option. On PC, it exposes DLSS Super Resolution and, on supported NVIDIA RTX hardware, Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation. The exact DLSS model can depend on the simulator build, GPU driver and NVIDIA app override, rather than a numbered in-game switch.
Is there a DLSS 5 setting in MSFS 2024?
No—Sim Update 5 does not contain a graphics setting literally named DLSS 5. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 integrates individual NVIDIA technologies rather than presenting every DLSS marketing generation as a selectable mode.
- DLSS Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image.
- Frame Generation inserts an AI-generated frame between rendered frames on compatible RTX hardware.
- Multi Frame Generation can generate multiple frames per rendered frame, with x3 and x4 options on supported RTX 50-series systems.
A newer model supplied through an NVIDIA driver or app override may work without changing the wording inside MSFS. That does not mean every capability associated with a newer DLSS generation is natively integrated. Which RTX cards support each MSFS 2024 DLSS feature?
DLSS Super Resolution works across RTX generations, but NVIDIA frame-generation capabilities depend on the GPU.

These are hardware boundaries, not image-quality levels. For example, an RTX 30-series card may use an eligible newer Super Resolution model while remaining physically unable to enable NVIDIA Frame Generation. Our separate instructions cover enabling frame generation and checking its requirements.
Does x4 Frame Generation mean DLSS 4 or DLSS 5?
No—x4 describes the displayed-frame ratio, not the DLSS version number. In x4 mode, three AI-generated frames are inserted for each conventionally rendered frame; x3 inserts two.
This can raise displayed FPS substantially, but it does not quadruple the simulator’s base rendering rate, main-thread performance or flight-model processing. If the underlying rendered frame rate is unstable, increasing the multiplier can make the counter look impressive while cockpit displays, rapid camera movement and control response still feel poor.
The simulator’s x3 and x4 changes are covered in our Sim Update 3 performance and Frame Generation notes. Those multiplier labels should not be read as “DLSS 3”, “DLSS 4” or “DLSS 5”.
How do I use the latest compatible DLSS features?
Use the simulator’s built-in DLSS controls first, then apply a driver-level override only when NVIDIA explicitly offers one for MSFS 2024.
- Update the simulator and NVIDIA driver. Multi Frame Generation options require a compatible simulator build, graphics driver and GPU.
- Select NVIDIA DLSS in Graphics options. Start with Quality mode and reduce the quality level only if GPU load remains the limiting factor.
- Configure Frame Generation separately. On compatible hardware, choose the available standard or multi-frame option; selecting DLSS Super Resolution does not automatically enable it.
- Check the NVIDIA app profile. If an official DLSS override is offered for MSFS 2024, it may load a newer compatible reconstruction model without adding a “DLSS 5” entry to the simulator.
- Judge the result in motion. Inspect glass-cockpit text, moving propellers, wing edges and rapid camera pans rather than relying only on the FPS counter.
Replacing DLSS files manually is not the same as official support. A mismatched file can cause artefacts or crashes, and simulator updates may replace it.
Why is Frame Generation missing or greyed out?
Frame Generation is unavailable when any required part of the hardware or software chain is missing.
- The GPU does not support the requested mode; RTX 20- and 30-series cards cannot unlock NVIDIA Frame Generation through an override.
- The simulator or graphics driver is out of date.
- Required Windows graphics scheduling support is disabled or unavailable.
- A laptop is running MSFS on its integrated GPU instead of the discrete NVIDIA GPU.
- The simulator is running in VR, where the desktop Frame Generation modes are not offered.
- An NVIDIA app override has been mistaken for a hardware unlock; overrides cannot add an optical frame-generation capability the GPU lacks.
Which DLSS mode should I choose?
DLSS Quality is the sensible starting point at 1440p or 4K because cockpit lettering and distant scenery retain more detail. Balanced can help when the GPU is heavily loaded, while Performance is best reserved for very high output resolutions or cases where GPU headroom matters more than fine image detail.
If lowering the DLSS quality level barely changes the base frame rate, MSFS is probably limited by the CPU or main thread. Frame Generation can make presentation smoother in that situation, but it cannot remove pauses caused by scenery loading, avionics calculations or an overloaded main thread.
