Microsoft Flight Simulator usually crashes or freezes when you switch to the external camera because that view exposes a faulty aircraft or camera add-on, a duplicate controller binding, or a GPU, VRAM or driver problem. Test a default aircraft with an unmodified keyboard command first; the result separates content faults from system-wide rendering faults.
What causes an external-camera crash in MSFS?
A crash tied to one aircraft points to its package; a crash across every aircraft points to controls, graphics or the simulator installation. The external view can expose the full exterior model, livery textures, effects and a wider scenery view, so it stresses different assets from the cockpit.

How do I stop MSFS crashing when I change view?
Start with a clean camera command and a stock aircraft, then add complexity back one item at a time.
- Test the camera command itself. Open the simulator's camera controls and select External without using the suspect joystick, yoke or controller button. If the menu or keyboard command works, the renderer is probably sound and the assigned button is the problem. - Create a stock baseline. Restart Microsoft Flight Simulator, load a built-in aircraft with its default livery at a stock airport, and switch views before moving. If that works, restore the original aircraft, livery, airport and weather one at a time. Testing everything together cannot identify the faulty component.
- Remove optional content. On PC, use Safe Mode if MSFS offers it after the crash, or temporarily move the contents of the Community folder elsewhere; do not delete them. An empty Community folder does not disable installed Marketplace packages, so disable the suspect package through the simulator's installed-content manager where available. On Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5, disable or uninstall optional aircraft, scenery and camera-related content, then fully restart the simulator.
- Check every controller profile. Search the assignments for the physical button and remove duplicate camera, window, pause or view commands. Disconnect unused controllers and close controller-mapping software, camera utilities and overlays for the test. - Isolate the aircraft package. If only one aircraft fails, remove its custom livery first, then reinstall or re-download the aircraft package if necessary. Do not copy camera configuration files from another aircraft. - Test graphics stability. Do this when the crash affects stock aircraft and occurs after the exterior image starts rendering. Apply a built-in lower preset, then reduce texture resolution, render scale and terrain or object detail. Temporarily disable Frame Generation, overlays and GPU tuning, and return CPU, GPU and memory clocks to their standard values. Update the graphics driver, or roll it back if the fault began directly after a driver change.
- Reset caches last. Delete and recreate the rolling cache through the simulator's data settings if the problem is location-specific. If one streamed or optional package remains suspect, remove and download that package again. Repair or verify the core installation only after add-ons, controls and graphics have been excluded.
What if MSFS freezes but does not close?
A stationary camera is not necessarily a simulator freeze: if menus, instruments or the flight clock still respond, the problem is usually a camera-control mode or input assignment. If the whole application stops responding or the audio loops, treat it as a genuine hang.
A short pause that recovers on the first external-camera switch usually means MSFS was loading exterior textures, effects or streamed assets. If the second switch is smooth, investigate storage, streaming and cache performance. If pauses worsen during a long flight, memory or VRAM pressure is more likely.
On a console, fully quit MSFS instead of resuming the faulting session from a suspended state. On PC, repeat the clean-aircraft test after closing external utilities. Does disabling crash detection fix an external-camera crash?
No. Crash detection controls simulated collisions and aircraft damage; it cannot prevent a desktop crash, application hang or graphics-driver reset. Change that setting only if MSFS displays an in-simulator crash screen because the aircraft struck an object while you were changing views.
When should I reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Reinstall the whole simulator only when every stock aircraft fails at stock locations with default controls and no optional content. On PC, use the platform's repair or verification function first. If one aircraft or livery alone causes the failure, reinstall that package rather than the complete simulator.
