How do I fix camera stuttering in MSFS 2024?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix stuttering when moving the camera in MSFS 2024 with targeted checks for frame pacing, CPU load, VRAM, scenery streaming, add-ons and TrackIR.

To fix stuttering when moving the camera in MSFS 2024, first cap the frame rate at a value the simulator can hold, then lower Terrain LOD, Objects LOD and traffic. If frame-time spikes remain, test without add-ons, frame generation, photogrammetry and head-tracking software to identify the real bottleneck.

Camera movement makes Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 draw newly visible terrain, cockpit surfaces and traffic while loading additional assets. That exposes CPU, GPU memory and streaming problems which may be less obvious while looking straight ahead. If the simulator also pauses without camera movement, follow our broader MSFS freeze and stutter checks.

Is it camera jitter or frame-rate stutter?

Real rendering stutter produces uneven frame times, while camera or tracking jitter can occur even when the frame rate stays stable.

If mouse and controller views are smooth but head movement is not, use our checks for separating TrackIR tracking faults from simulator stutter. In VR, reprojection and headset frame timing require different treatment; see our VR-specific jitter and stuttering fixes.

How do I stop MSFS 2024 stuttering when I pan the camera?

Work through frame pacing, CPU load, GPU memory, streaming and add-ons in that order, changing only one variable at a time.

  1. Create a repeatable test. Park the same default aircraft at the same airport with fixed weather. Disable head tracking, then compare cockpit and external panning with a mouse, keyboard or controller. Use an FPS or frame-time display if available; average FPS can look acceptable while individual frames still spike.
  2. Stabilise frame pacing. Temporarily disable Frame Generation and apply one frame-rate limiter at a value the system can maintain in the test location. Do not stack simulator, graphics-driver and external limiters. If V-Sync causes rhythmic judder, test it off or select a cap compatible with the display refresh rate.
  3. Reduce main-thread pressure. Lower Terrain Level of Detail and Objects Level of Detail first, followed by aircraft, road, ship and airport traffic. These settings matter during a pan because the simulator must prepare newly visible objects. If reducing Render Scaling barely changes the stutter, the processor or main thread is more likely than the GPU to be limiting performance. Our MSFS 2024 CPU and GPU tuning guide covers that diagnosis in more depth.
  4. Relieve GPU and VRAM pressure. If GPU usage is saturated, reduce Render Scaling, clouds, shadows or reflections. If video memory is near its limit, lower Texture Resolution and remove unusually heavy aircraft or scenery. VRAM exhaustion often causes a sharp hitch whenever the camera reveals a detailed cockpit panel or terminal.
  5. Test scenery streaming. Pan through the same view twice. If the second pass is smooth, temporarily disable photogrammetry and other online scenery features, stop background downloads and test a wired connection where possible. If disabling photogrammetry fixes the issue, the cause is scenery delivery or caching rather than the camera itself. Delete and recreate the in-simulator Rolling Cache if it is enabled and appears corrupted.
  6. Remove add-ons from the test. On PC, temporarily empty the Community folder and disable external traffic tools, overlays and camera utilities. Test marketplace scenery separately because emptying the Community folder does not remove it. If the stutter occurs with one aircraft or at one airport, restore other content and isolate that package.
  7. Restart before destructive repairs. Fully close MSFS 2024 and reboot the computer or console. On PC, install a stable graphics driver and return CPU, GPU and memory overclocks to standard settings for the test. Do not repeatedly erase shader caches: after a simulator or driver update, rebuilding them can make the first view of an area stutter again.

Should I enable Frame Generation for smoother camera movement?

Frame Generation can make camera movement appear smoother, but it cannot repair frame-time spikes caused by the main thread, full VRAM, scenery streaming or faulty add-ons.

Diagnose the problem with Frame Generation disabled, establish a stable native frame rate, and then enable it. If panning becomes fluid but develops latency, tearing or intermittent jolts, revisit the frame cap and V-Sync arrangement rather than raising graphics settings immediately.

Why does the camera stutter only in the cockpit?

Cockpit-only stutter usually points to detailed interior textures, glass displays, reflections or an aircraft-specific add-on rather than global scenery.

Compare the affected aircraft with a default, less complex aircraft at the same location. Lower the glass-cockpit display refresh setting when available, reduce Texture Resolution if VRAM is tight, and disable custom liveries. If only one aircraft triggers the problem, changing global scenery settings is unlikely to be the best fix.

What can console users do about camera stutter?

On Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro, fully quit MSFS 2024, restart the console and test with traffic, photogrammetry and third-party scenery disabled.

Remove recently installed content one package at a time and recreate the Rolling Cache if it is enabled. Avoid deleting saved data or reinstalling the entire simulator first; persistent camera stutter is more often caused by an overloaded scene, streaming interruption or add-on than a damaged installation.
