Do Orbx add-ons work in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Check Orbx add-on compatibility with MSFS 2024, install the correct build, and fix wrong paths, duplicate scenery and console limitations.

Some Orbx add-ons are compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, but compatibility is product-specific—not automatic across the whole Orbx catalogue. Use the product’s declared simulator support as the deciding factor. MSFS 2020 ownership alone does not prove that an airport, scenery package or utility will work correctly in MSFS 2024.

Which Orbx add-ons are compatible with MSFS 2024?

An Orbx product is safe to install when its product information or installer explicitly lists Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, or its developer confirms that the same package supports both simulators. The Orbx name alone is not a compatibility guarantee because Orbx Central also distributes products made by partner developers.

Airports and basic scenery may transfer more readily than aircraft, traffic products or utilities that depend on simulator-specific systems, but that is only a risk guide. Our explanation of why MSFS 2020 package compatibility varies covers the technical distinction in more detail.

Does an MSFS 2020 purchase include the MSFS 2024 version?

There is no universal upgrade rule. Compatibility, ownership and entitlement are separate questions: a developer may update an existing package, provide a different build or treat the 2024 edition separately. Check the product entry attached to your account rather than assuming that an earlier purchase includes every later version.

How do I install an Orbx add-on in MSFS 2024?

On PC, install the package against the MSFS 2024 installation detected by Orbx Central; if Central does not offer MSFS 2024 as a target for that product, stop rather than redirecting its MSFS 2020 build manually.

  1. Update Orbx Central: an old client may not detect the simulator or expose the correct product build.
  2. Confirm the compatibility label: look for explicit Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 support in the product information associated with your library.
  3. Select the correct simulator: keep MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 libraries and Community folders separate.
  4. Let Central manage the package: it may install into an external Orbx library and link the package to the simulator. Do not also copy a second version into Community.
  5. Test it in isolation: start with other add-on scenery for the same airport or region disabled, then restore packages one at a time.

A product bought through the in-simulator Marketplace should be installed through the simulator’s own library rather than Orbx Central. For folder structure, package isolation and clean testing, use our MSFS 2024 mod-management procedure.

Why is compatible Orbx scenery missing or broken?

Wrong simulator paths, duplicate packages and overlapping scenery are the usual causes when an officially compatible Orbx product fails to display correctly.

  • The scenery does not appear: check that it was installed for MSFS 2024 rather than the MSFS 2020 Community folder. If an external library is used, confirm that its package link still resolves, then use Central’s repair or verification option if one is offered.
  • Buildings, runways or jetways appear twice: two versions of the same airport are active. Remove the older package and check both local add-ons and installed Marketplace content.
  • Ground textures overlap or terrain is raised or sunken: disable other airports, mesh, city enhancements and regional packages covering the same coordinates. Re-enable them individually to find the conflict.
  • Objects or textures are missing: repair or reinstall the supported package and check for any dependencies named in its product information.
  • Loading stalls or the simulator crashes: remove the package, confirm that MSFS 2024 loads normally, then reinstall only the correct build. Copying an entire MSFS 2020 add-on folder into MSFS 2024 makes this diagnosis much harder.

Clearing the rolling cache is not a substitute for removing duplicate scenery or correcting an installation path. Fix the package conflict first.

Do Orbx add-ons work on Xbox and PlayStation 5?

Orbx Central cannot install PC packages on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro. A console add-on must be published for that platform through the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 in-simulator Marketplace and shown as compatible there.

Do not assume that a PC purchase supplies a console copy, or that availability on one console guarantees availability on another. Xbox users can follow our guide to installing and managing Marketplace add-ons on Xbox; the same closed-platform principle applies on PlayStation, where manually downloaded Community packages cannot be used.

Should I try an unlisted MSFS 2020 Orbx product anyway?

Do not use an unlisted MSFS 2020 product in your main MSFS 2024 installation. On PC, an experienced user can test a copy in an otherwise empty add-on environment, but apparent success does not establish compatibility: airport elevations, navigation data, animations, jetways or performance can still be wrong.

Keep the original package untouched, never mix its files with a supported 2024 edition, and remove it before requesting support or diagnosing unrelated simulator problems.
