Why does my rudder not reach full deflection in FSX?

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, a rudder that will not reach full deflection is usually caused by incomplete Windows calibration, low FSX axis sensitivity, an oversized null zone, or two devices controlling the same rudder axis. Calibrate the pedals first, then use one rudder assignment and retest with auto-rudder disabled.

How do I restore full rudder travel in FSX?

Work from the physical pedal signal towards the aircraft, because changing FSX settings cannot repair an axis that never reaches its endpoints in Windows.

  1. Test the axis in Windows. Close FSX, press Windows key plus R, enter joy.cpl, and open the pedal or joystick properties. Move the rudder fully left and right. The indicator should reach both ends smoothly and return near the centre. If it stops short, recalibrate through the device properties or its own control software; our pedal calibration procedure explains the endpoint test.
  2. Remove duplicate rudder assignments. Open FSX's control settings and inspect every device in the controller list. Clear Rudder Axis from the yoke, joystick twist grip, throttle quadrant and any other device, leaving it assigned only to the intended controller. Automatic duplicate assignments are a mistake we see constantly.
  3. Use an axis assignment. Bind the pedals to Rudder Axis, not the digital Rudder Left and Rudder Right commands. Toe brakes must remain on their separate left- and right-brake axes. Reverse the rudder axis only if its direction is wrong.
  4. Reset FSX calibration. Select the correct controller on the Calibration tab. As a diagnostic starting point, move rudder sensitivity to maximum and reduce the null zone to minimum.   5. Disable conflicting assistance. Turn off auto-rudder while testing physical pedals. It is intended to coordinate rudder without a separate axis and can obscure what the pedal input is doing; our explanation of FSX auto-rudder covers when to leave it enabled.
  6. Test a default aircraft. Load a simple default light aircraft on the ground and compare its rudder with the add-on that showed the problem. If the default aircraft reaches full travel, the global controller setup is working and the limitation belongs to the other aircraft or its control software.

Why does full rudder travel work in Windows but not in FSX?

If Windows reaches both endpoints, the hardware is not the problem; the fault is in FSX's assignment, calibration or add-on control layer.

First check that you adjusted the same device that owns the rudder assignment. FSX stores settings separately for each detected controller, so changing the joystick's sensitivity does nothing when the rudder is assigned to the pedals.

If FSUIPC or another control utility processes the axis, avoid calibrating and assigning it through two systems at once. Let either FSX or the utility own the rudder path, remove the duplicate assignment from the other, and then recalibrate. Two active inputs can cancel, constrain or intermittently override each other.

Should rudder sensitivity be at maximum in FSX?

Maximum sensitivity and minimum null zone are the best diagnostic baseline for a conventional rudder-pedal axis in FSX.

A low sensitivity setting can compress the available command range, while a large null zone discards too much movement around the centre. Once full left and right deflection are available, increase the null zone only enough to stop unwanted centre movement. Sensitivity cannot compensate for missing physical range. If the Windows indicator stops at 70 or 80 per cent, repair or recalibrate that input before tuning FSX.

Why is rudder travel limited more on one side?

Unequal left and right travel usually indicates an off-centre calibration, rudder trim, a noisy sensor or a second controller applying a constant command.

  • Release and centre the pedals before starting FSX or running calibration.
  • Return rudder trim to neutral and check that no cockpit trim control is displaced.
  • Watch the Windows axis indicator for asymmetric movement, spikes or an endpoint that drifts.
  • Confirm that neither toe-brake axis has accidentally been assigned to the rudder.
  • Disconnect other controllers temporarily; if full travel returns, reconnect them one at a time and remove the conflicting binding.

Can an add-on aircraft intentionally limit rudder deflection?

Yes. Some advanced aircraft model speed-dependent rudder limiters, yaw dampers, flight-control laws, or hydraulic and electrical conditions that restrict visible rudder movement.

If the same pedals produce full deflection in a default aircraft, consult the add-on's operating documentation and test it with the required systems powered. Do not edit aircraft configuration values merely to enlarge the animation: rudder effectiveness changes yaw response, while a modelled limiter or incorrect animation is a separate issue.

The external rudder animation is not always a precise input indicator either. If the Windows and FSX axes both reach their endpoints but only the visual surface stops short, the aircraft model or animation is the likely cause.
