description=Virtavia 2011\n\nThe British version of the Phantom II was a substantially modified version of the American aircraft, featuring Rolls-Royce Spey Turbofans which provided better takeoff and climb performance, but resulted in a reduced top speed and service ceiling. Improved slow flight was achieved by boundary layer control via bleed air over the wings and leading edge slats on both the wings and horizontal tail. Many other changes were incorporated into the British version, including an extensible nose gear for carrier operations which increased the angle of attack for carrier launches. A total of 5,195 of the type were built, 127 by Mitsubishi, when production completely ceased in 1979. The prototype was first flown on May 27, 1958 and held great promise in a variety of roles. The aircraft was so appealing that the USAF signed up for the type as well. Phantoms set many world records during their prime, and many remain in service throughout the world.
