The Guimbal Cabri G2 is the best helicopter for beginners in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. It is compact, predictable and designed as a real-world trainer, with excellent visibility and less system workload than a turbine helicopter. It still requires correct cyclic, collective and pedal coordination, so the skills transfer to larger rotorcraft.

Why is the Cabri G2 best for learning?

The Cabri G2 teaches helicopter fundamentals without burying the pilot in turbine systems or high-performance handling. It is not effortless to hover—no useful trainer should be—but its reactions are easier to read and correct than those of faster, heavier helicopters.

  • Manageable workload: The governed piston powerplant reduces the amount of engine management required once the helicopter is running.
  • Good visibility: The broad windscreen makes it easier to judge sideways drift, height and the landing point.
  • Honest handling: Poor cyclic or pedal coordination remains visible instead of being concealed by a sophisticated stability system.
  • Transferable technique: Hovering, pedal turns, departures and approaches use the same basic coordination required in larger rotorcraft.

What controls do beginners need?

You need analogue control of the cyclic, collective and anti-torque pedals wherever possible. A spring-centred joystick works well enough for the cyclic; an aeroplane yoke is poorly suited because hovering requires small, continuous inputs in every direction.

  • Cyclic: Assign joystick pitch and roll axes, then use modest sensitivity around the centre. Excessive dead zones create a sudden jump as the control begins moving.
  • Collective: Bind a throttle-style lever to the helicopter collective axis. Collective changes blade pitch and power demand; it is not the same control as engine throttle.
  • Anti-torque: Use pedals or a joystick twist axis for yaw. Check the direction before take-off because a reversed pedal axis causes an immediate spin.
  • Engine throttle: Do not bind the same lever to both collective and engine throttle. Duplicate assignments are a common reason for falling rotor RPM or inconsistent lift.

A gamepad is usable on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, but limited collective and yaw resolution makes hovering harder. There is no universal sensitivity percentage because controller drift and spring strength differ; adjust only enough to make small inputs possible. How should you practise your first hover?

  1. Remove unnecessary variables. Start ready to fly on a wide, level surface in daylight, using calm preset weather rather than live conditions.
  2. Check every axis. Move cyclic, collective and pedals separately while watching the cockpit controls. Remove duplicate bindings and correct any reversed axis before lifting.
  3. Raise the collective slowly. Add matching anti-torque input as the skids become light. Avoid large cyclic movements; pressure followed by a pause works better than repeatedly chasing the helicopter.
  4. Hold a low hover. Stay roughly one to two metres above the surface and look well ahead rather than directly beneath the aircraft. Correct drift early with tiny inputs.
  5. Add forward flight. Once the hover is controlled, lower the nose slightly and accelerate smoothly. Practise straight departures before turns or confined-area work.
  6. Return through a stable approach. Reduce speed and descent gradually, re-establish a low hover, then lower the collective only after the helicopter is settled over the landing point.

Why does the Cabri G2 spin or tip over?

Should beginners use helicopter assists?

Use helicopter assists only as temporary training aids because full assistance can hide the coordination the Cabri G2 is meant to teach. Anti-torque assistance can help a gamepad user learn cyclic and collective control first, but it should be removed once basic hovering is understood.

Do not confuse simulator-wide assistance with an aircraft's own stability augmentation system. The latter is part of how some larger helicopters operate; the former may override or counteract your physical controls.

Which helicopter should you fly after the Cabri G2?

The Bell 407 is a logical next step once you can hover, perform controlled pedal turns and land the Cabri without assistance. Its turbine power, greater speed and stronger torque response introduce more workload without abandoning conventional helicopter controls.
