What are the best helicopter add-ons and mods for MSFS?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Compare the best MSFS helicopter add-ons and mods, from H145 and H160 twins to Bell 47G, UH-1H and freeware, with setup and compatibility advice.

The best Microsoft Flight Simulator helicopter add-ons are HPG’s H145 or H160 for modern twins, FlyInside’s Bell 47G for hands-on piston flying, Taog’s UH-1H for a classic turbine, and the freeware SA 342 Gazelle for a no-cost start. Choose by native flight-model support, systems depth, controls and simulator-version compatibility—not appearance alone.

Best MSFS helicopters by flying style

The strongest choice depends on the type of helicopter flying you want to do rather than a single overall ranking.

Flying styleRecommended helicopterWhy choose itMain caveat
Modern utility and missionsHPG H145A capable all-round modern twin with glass avionics, automation and mission-oriented configurations. Its automation takes time to learn, and available equipment can depend on the package or expansion installed.
Modern civil operationsHPG H160Best suited to simmers who want an advanced glass cockpit, modern handling systems and fast cross-country flying. It provides less of the raw, manually managed experience found in older helicopters.
Classic piston flyingFlyInside Bell 47GRewards careful rotor-RPM, throttle and energy management while providing excellent visibility for visual flying. It is deliberately basic compared with an IFR-equipped twin.
Classic military utilityTaog’s UH-1H HueyA strong choice for troop transport, confined-area approaches and the distinctive feel of a large single-rotor utility helicopter.Confirm support for your exact MSFS edition before installing it.
Light civil turbine flyingCowanSim 206B3 or 500EGood options for sightseeing, short hops and practising visual approaches in familiar light helicopters.Systems depth and handling features vary between individual CowanSim products.
FreewareAérospatiale SA 342 GazelleAn agile turbine helicopter that offers a practical no-cost entry into MSFS rotorcraft.Check the package notes for simulator compatibility and any required flight-model utility.

If we had to recommend one broadly capable aircraft, we would start with the H145. For an uncomplicated first download on PC, browse our curated MSFS helicopter files, including the SA 342 Gazelle.

How should you choose an MSFS helicopter add-on?

Choose an add-on by its flight model, intended operations and support for your simulator version before considering cockpit graphics.

  • Flight-model architecture: Look for explicit use of the native MSFS helicopter model or a maintained custom system. A proprietary model can be excellent; the warning sign is an undocumented or abandoned external dependency.
  • Aircraft workload: Pick the Bell 47G for manual engine and rotor management, a light turbine for visual flying, or the H145 and H160 when you want automation and glass-cockpit procedures.
  • Operational equipment: IFR flying requires functional navigation, autopilot and radio integration. Doors, hoists and medical interiors are less valuable if they are only cosmetic and you mainly want realistic handling.
  • Control support: Check that the aircraft recognises analogue collective and anti-torque inputs. Force trim and autopilot bindings also matter in modern twins.
  • Exact simulator compatibility: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 are separate targets. An aircraft appearing in both simulators does not prove that all avionics, materials or flight dynamics work correctly.

Global physics tweaks are rarely the answer because good helicopters use aircraft-specific configuration or custom code. Our guidance on judging flight-model realism and control behaviour explains why that distinction matters.

Which companion helicopter mods are useful?

The most useful companion mods add places and reasons to fly without interfering with the helicopter’s own flight model.

  • Helipad and rooftop scenery creates meaningful confined landing sites.
  • Helicopter missions can add emergency, transport or utility objectives, provided they support the aircraft and simulator edition being used.
  • Liveries must match the exact base model and variant; a texture made for one developer’s H145 will not work on another aircraft.
  • Sound or handling replacements should be installed cautiously. They can overwrite aircraft files, conflict after an update or undo the developer’s tuned flight model.

Install companion mods one at a time and test the helicopter after each addition. That makes the offending package obvious if avionics stop loading or the aircraft develops abnormal handling.

Will MSFS 2020 helicopter add-ons work in MSFS 2024?

An MSFS 2020 helicopter may load in MSFS 2024, but it should not be treated as compatible unless its developer or package notes explicitly say so.

Common migration problems include blank displays, missing cockpit interactions, incorrect materials, broken sounds and altered flight dynamics. Remove any older copy before installing an updated package; two versions of the same aircraft in the Community folder can produce unpredictable results.

On PC, manually downloaded packages can use the Community folder. Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5 editions of MSFS 2024 cannot use external Community-folder downloads, so console pilots are limited to aircraft distributed through the in-simulator Marketplace. MSFS 2020 remains a PC and Xbox release and was never released for PlayStation.

How do you install a helicopter mod on PC?

Manual helicopter mods are installed like other MSFS aircraft, but archive nesting and obsolete dependencies cause many missing-aircraft reports.

  1. Verify the target simulator. Confirm that the download supports MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024 or both, and note any required external utility or base aircraft.
  2. Extract the archive. Do not place the ZIP or RAR archive itself in the Community folder.
  3. Find the actual package folder. In a conventional package, files such as manifest.json and layout.json sit near its root. An extra wrapper folder can prevent detection.
  4. Move it to the active Community folder. Restart the simulator, then check the aircraft selector. If it remains missing, remove duplicate versions and confirm that you are using the Community path belonging to the active installation.

Our complete PC aircraft installation and troubleshooting steps cover locating the correct Community folder and isolating conflicting packages.

What controls do MSFS helicopters need?

A joystick for cyclic control, an analogue collective axis and anti-torque pedals provide the best helicopter experience, although a twist-grip joystick can substitute for pedals.

Bind the physical lever to Collective Axis rather than relying on incremental buttons. Many throttle quadrants move opposite to a real collective, so invert the axis if raising the lever lowers the cockpit collective. Do not bind the same lever to both collective and general throttle unless the aircraft documentation specifically requires it.

Start with a neutral response curve and remove duplicate assignments from gamepads, throttles and pedals. Helicopter assistance settings can conceal a control conflict, so use them while learning if needed, then reduce them once the axes behave correctly.

Why does the helicopter spin or refuse to lift?

Uncommanded yaw usually indicates a missing or conflicting pedal axis, while failure to lift commonly points to a reversed collective, low rotor RPM or an incomplete start-up procedure.
