Compare C-130 Hercules add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator, including full aircraft, exterior-only packs, freeware, fidelity and platform limits.
For Microsoft Flight Simulator, the main released C-130 choices are Captain Sim’s C-130 Hercules range and MSCENERY’s simpler C-130 Hercules. Captain Sim also has an exterior-only package that is not a conventional cockpit-equipped aircraft. Most freeware files are liveries or tweaks, while announced C-130J projects need a confirmed release before they count as available.
Available C-130 Hercules add-ons for MSFS
| Add-on | What it provides | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Captain Sim C-130 Hercules | A flyable payware Hercules with a virtual cockpit, external model and related variant packages. | It is aimed more at accessible flying and visual detail than exhaustive aircraft-system simulation. Check which variant and cockpit package the listing includes. |
| Captain Sim C-130 Exterior | An exterior-focused Hercules package intended primarily for external presentation. | This is not equivalent to the complete cockpit-equipped product. Buying it while expecting a normal virtual cockpit is a common mistake. |
| MSCENERY C-130 Hercules | A simpler standalone interpretation of the Hercules for casual flying. | Expect limited systems depth. Check the cockpit, avionics and supported platform rather than judging it only from exterior screenshots. |
| Freeware liveries and modifications | Repaints, sound changes, camera files and adjustments for an existing C-130. | Most require a specific payware model and sometimes an exact variant; they are not complete aircraft. |
Blackbird Simulations’ C-130J is the development project most often confused with an already downloadable aircraft. Treat any previewed Hercules project as available only when there is a released product listing for the exact simulator version and platform; an announcement or development video is not an installable add-on.
Which C-130 add-on should you choose?
Choose the full Captain Sim package if you want a recognisable legacy Hercules with a usable cockpit and several related variants. Choose the MSCENERY aircraft only if straightforward operation matters more than authentic systems behaviour.
None of these names alone guarantees a study-level simulation. Before buying, check for the features that separate a detailed four-engine turboprop from a visual model:
- Correct Hercules generation: legacy C-130 variants use four-bladed propellers and largely analogue flight decks, while the C-130J has six-bladed propellers, different engines and a digital cockpit.
- Engine and propeller modelling: look for functional condition levers, engine starts, propeller governing, beta or reverse operation and believable asymmetric handling.
- Aircraft systems: inspect the stated depth of the electrical, fuel, hydraulic, bleed-air and pressurisation systems.
- Cargo features: a moving rear ramp, paratroop doors or pallets may be visual animations rather than working payload systems.
- Package requirements: variant, tanker or livery products may require a separate base aircraft.
If the Hercules is only one part of a planned installation, our broader comparison of worthwhile MSFS add-ons can help put its value and complexity in context.
Are there free C-130 Hercules add-ons for MSFS?
Free C-130 downloads are predominantly liveries and enhancements rather than complete, from-scratch Hercules aircraft. Search our Microsoft Flight Simulator mods library, but read each file description for the required base model before downloading it.
Why does a C-130 livery not appear?
A missing livery usually targets a different C-130 package or variant, even when the folder and screenshots simply say “Hercules”. A repaint made for one developer’s C-130H will not automatically work with another developer’s model or a C-130J.
- Confirm the dependency: match the developer, aircraft generation and variant named in the repaint description.
- Install the base aircraft: a livery cannot create the underlying cockpit, model or flight dynamics.
- Check the folder depth: on PC, the add-on’s
manifest.jsonandlayout.jsonshould be at the package root inside theCommunityfolder, not buried beneath an extra wrapper folder. - Remove conflicting older copies: duplicate package names can make the simulator load the wrong version.
- Select the correct variant: some repaints appear under a separate aircraft entry rather than beneath every Hercules model.
Do C-130 add-ons work in MSFS 2024, Xbox and PS5?
Compatibility is determined by the individual product and platform, not merely by the words “Microsoft Flight Simulator”. An aircraft built for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 may work in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, but it should not be assumed compatible without a developer or Marketplace compatibility label.
- PC: supports both Marketplace content and manually installed Community packages.
- Xbox Series X|S: requires an Xbox-compatible release distributed through the in-simulator Marketplace; PC downloads cannot be sideloaded.
- PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro: only MSFS 2024 is available, and add-ons must have an approved PlayStation Marketplace release. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was never released on PlayStation.
If an owned C-130 is absent from MSFS 2024, check the simulator’s library or content controls, confirm that the package is enabled, and verify that its listing supports MSFS 2024. If the product is explicitly exterior-only, the missing conventional cockpit is a product limitation rather than a failed installation.
