To disable joystick twist in a flight simulator, open the selected joystick’s control profile and clear the physical twist axis—usually shown as Z Rotation, RZ, Yaw or Rudder—from the analogue Rudder Axis or Yaw command. Save the profile, then check that no other profile, device or Steam Input mapping restores it.

This is general flight-simulator guidance: disabling twist is a control-binding change, not a calibration setting. Pitch and roll can remain active while the twist axis is left unassigned.

What is the Z axis on a controller, and is RZ the joystick twist?

A controller’s Z axis is simply a third analogue input channel; it is not guaranteed to be the twist grip. Depending on the joystick and its driver, Z may represent the throttle, a slider or twist.

Hardware labels are not consistent, so never delete a Z or RZ axis by name alone. Detect it by movement first.

How do I make or detect a Z input?

To produce a Z input for the simulator’s detection tool, select its search-by-input or axis-detection function and twist the grip while leaving the throttle and other controls still. The moving indicator reveals how that controller reports its twist axis.

Does “Ian binding” or “Ian’s binding” mean anything?

No standard flight-simulator control is called an Ian binding. In this context, “Ian binding” or “Ian’s binding” is usually a mistype or misreading of axis binding, meaning the link between a physical controller axis and a simulator command. If it appears as a custom profile name, Ian may simply be the person who named that profile.

How do I remove the joystick twist-axis binding?

Remove only the twist-to-yaw assignment from the joystick’s active profile; do not disable the entire controller.

  1. Open the simulator’s controller settings. Select the physical joystick, not the throttle, pedals or gamepad shown beside it.
  2. Confirm the active profile. Some simulators keep separate default, custom, aircraft-specific or control-mode profiles. Edit the one actually loaded for the aircraft.
  3. Detect the twist input. Search by input, twist the grip and note every command assigned to the moving Z Rotation, RZ or equivalent axis.
  4. Clear the analogue yaw command. Remove that joystick axis from Rudder Axis, Yaw or the simulator’s equivalent analogue control. Do not remove the rudder-pedal assignment from its separate device column.
  5. Check ground-steering commands. If twisting turns the aircraft only while taxiing, clear any nosewheel-steering or tiller assignment attached to the same axis.
  6. Save a custom profile. A named profile is less likely to be confused with an automatically generated default. Confirm that the intended profile remains selected after restarting the simulator.
  7. Test the input display. Twist the stick and verify that the rudder or yaw indicator stays centred. Then test pedals, buttons or another yaw control to make sure the aircraft has not been left without rudder control.

Which rudder or yaw setting should I clear?

Clear the centred analogue rudder assignment associated with the joystick twist, using the correct device and profile for your simulator.

FSX users adding pedals should also follow the FSX rudder-pedal and toe-brake setup so twist, pedal rudder and differential brakes do not compete.

What if I launch the simulator through Steam?

Steam does not assign one universal name to joystick twist, but Steam Input can translate or duplicate a controller mapping before the simulator receives it. A conventional flight stick may be passed directly to the simulator, while another configuration may appear as a virtual gamepad.

Clear the in-simulator binding first. If the yaw mapping returns or two devices react to one twist movement, inspect the title’s per-game Steam controller configuration and remove the translated yaw mapping or disable Steam Input for that title. Restart the simulator afterwards so it can rebuild its device list. Do not disable Steam Input globally if another controller depends on it.

Should I use a dead zone instead of disabling joystick twist?

Use a dead zone when you still need twist for rudder control but want to suppress small accidental movements or sensor jitter near the centre.

  • Unbind the axis when rudder pedals or another controller will handle yaw.
  • Use a small dead zone when twist remains your main rudder control but the centre signal is unstable.
  • Use a physical twist lock and unbind it when the joystick provides a lock and you never intend to use twist.

Why is yaw still active after joystick twist is unbound?

If yaw remains active, another input, assistance feature or normal aircraft force is causing it rather than the cleared twist binding.

  • Duplicate analogue binding: Inspect every connected stick, throttle, pedal set and gamepad for another Rudder Axis or Yaw assignment.
  • Wrong profile: Check whether changing aircraft, switching control mode or restarting loaded a different profile.
  • Digital rudder command: A button, key or hat switch may still be assigned to Rudder Left, Rudder Right or rudder-centre commands.
  • Steam Input duplication: A virtual controller may be sending yaw alongside the physical joystick.
  • Assisted controls: Auto-rudder, take-off assistance or other piloting aids can move the rudder without twist input.
  • Ground-only steering: Nosewheel steering, tiller input or unequal toe-brake pressure can turn the aircraft during taxi even though the airborne rudder axis is centred.
  • Normal aircraft behaviour: Crosswind, asymmetric thrust, propeller effects and incorrect trim can produce yaw with no controller command.

Watch the simulator’s raw control indicator rather than judging only by the aircraft’s direction. If the indicated rudder input stays centred while the aircraft yaws, the joystick twist has been disabled successfully and the cause lies elsewhere.
