How do I disable joystick twist in a flight simulator?

To disable joystick twist input in a flight simulator, open the controller’s axis assignments and remove the twist axis—usually labelled Z Rotation, RZ, Yaw or Rudder—from Rudder Axis or Yaw. Save the controller profile, then verify that no second profile or automatic binding has reassigned it.

This is a general controller-binding change rather than a calibration setting. The exact menu differs between simulators, but the principle is always to unbind that physical axis while leaving the joystick’s pitch and roll axes active.

How do I remove the joystick twist-axis binding?

  1. Identify the physical axis. Open the simulator’s input display or axis-detection tool and twist the stick. Note which indicator moves; common names include Z Rotation, RZ, Yaw and Rudder. Do not assume every device uses the same name.
  2. Select the joystick itself. Controller menus normally separate the joystick, throttle and rudder pedals into different device columns or profiles. Make sure you are editing the stick rather than deleting the pedal assignment.
  3. Search by input or assigned controls. Twist the grip when prompted, or filter the list to show commands already assigned to that axis.
  4. Clear the yaw assignment. Remove the twist axis from Rudder Axis, Yaw or the equivalent analogue command. Also check separate nosewheel-steering or tiller assignments if the unwanted movement occurs only on the ground.
  5. Save the controller profile. Use a named custom profile where the simulator supports one. Default profiles can be regenerated after an update, device reconnection or controller reset.
  6. Test with the controls indicator visible. Twist the stick and confirm that the rudder no longer moves. Then move any pedals or alternative yaw control to confirm that the intended axis still works.

Which setting should I clear in each simulator?

Clear the analogue rudder or yaw assignment attached to the joystick’s twist axis, not the simulator’s entire controller system.

Should I use a dead zone instead of disabling twist?

Use a dead zone only when you want to keep twist control but need to suppress small movements around the centre.

A large dead zone does not truly disable the axis. A worn sensor, loose grip or strong twist can still move the rudder beyond the dead zone. If rudder pedals or another controller will provide yaw, clearing the twist binding is the cleaner solution.

Why does the aircraft still yaw after twist is unbound?

Persistent yaw usually comes from another binding, an assistance feature or normal aircraft behaviour rather than the disabled twist axis.

  • Another controller profile: Check every connected joystick, throttle, pedal set and gamepad for a second Rudder Axis assignment.
  • Digital rudder commands: Remove unwanted Rudder Left and Rudder Right button bindings as well as the analogue axis.
  • Separate steering input: Some simulators expose nosewheel steering or tiller as its own axis, so the aircraft may turn on the ground while the airborne rudder remains still.
  • Automatic rudder assistance: Disable assisted yaw, take-off assistance or similar control aids if they are moving the rudder for you.
  • Unequal toe brakes: A partially applied left or right brake can pull the aircraft to one side during taxi.
  • Expected flight forces: Crosswind, propeller effects and an aircraft that is out of trim can create yaw even when no rudder input is being sent.

Use the simulator’s control-position display to separate commanded input from aerodynamic movement. If the on-screen rudder remains centred while the aircraft yaws, the joystick twist binding is no longer the cause.

Can I lock the twist grip instead?

A physical twist lock is useful, but the software assignment should still be removed if the axis is not needed.

The lock stops deliberate grip movement, yet a worn sensor may continue producing electrical noise. Unbinding the axis prevents that signal from reaching the aircraft. Avoid disabling all joystick input or turning off controllers globally, because that also removes pitch, roll and other required controls.
