Where can I download free X-Plane 12 scenery?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Find free X-Plane 12 scenery downloads, check compatibility, and install airports, mesh and photoreal regions in the correct scenery order.

You can download free X-Plane 12 scenery from Fly Away Simulation’s X-Plane scenery library, which covers airports, cities, terrain mesh and photoreal regions. Check each file’s description before downloading: many X-Plane 11 packages work in X-Plane 12, but older mesh, water and seasonal assets require closer compatibility checks.

Where can I find free X-Plane 12 scenery downloads?

Our dedicated catalogue of free X-Plane scenery includes individual airports, regional packages, city enhancements, terrain mesh and satellite-based scenery. Listings identify the intended simulator version and any required libraries wherever that information is available.

Do not assume that every file carrying the X-Plane name is interchangeable. Scenery made for Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX or Prepar3D cannot be installed in X-Plane, and an X-Plane package may depend on separate object libraries that must also be downloaded.

Which type of free scenery should I download?

Choose the scenery type according to what you want to improve; an airport package and a photoreal region solve different problems.

Scenery typeChoose it whenCheck before downloading
AirportYou want improved terminals, stands, lighting and ground detail at a specific ICAO location.Required libraries, supported X-Plane version and whether another package already covers the airport.
City or landmarksYou fly VFR and need recognisable buildings, bridges or local features.Whether it overlaps an airport, overlay or regional package.
Photoreal or orthophotoYou want satellite imagery covering the ground.Download size, installed size, tile coverage and whether mesh is included.
Terrain meshYou want more detailed elevation, coastlines or land-class placement.Coverage boundaries and conflicts with orthophoto or another mesh package.
Object libraryA scenery package lists it as a dependency. It normally adds no visible scenery by itself; install it only when required.

Photoreal regions can consume far more storage than airport packages. Our breakdown of free orthophoto regions and their storage demands explains the trade-offs before you commit to a large download. For broader coverage, our comparison of global scenery methods shows how overlays, generated orthophotos and replacement mesh differ.

Will X-Plane 11 scenery work in X-Plane 12?

Many conventional X-Plane 11 airports and object-based scenery packages work in X-Plane 12, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Packages explicitly updated for X-Plane 12 remain the safest choice.

  • Airports and landmarks: These often transfer successfully, provided their required libraries are installed.
  • Photoreal tiles: Ground imagery may work, but old water masks, coastlines or baked-in seasonal imagery can look wrong under X-Plane 12.
  • Mesh scenery: Older mesh can replace newer global terrain data across an entire tile, not just the advertised airport or region.
  • Plugin-dependent packages: Any included plugin or script needs separate X-Plane 12 compatibility. The scenery itself loading does not prove that its code will work.

Read the description and included documentation rather than relying only on the folder name. Freeware also does not automatically grant permission to modify or redistribute the package; retain the author’s documentation and licence.

How do I install downloaded scenery in X-Plane 12?

Extract the scenery and place its actual package folder inside X-Plane 12’s Custom Scenery directory, then restart the simulator so it can register the package.

  1. Extract the archive. Do not place the compressed ZIP, RAR or other archive directly in Custom Scenery.
  2. Find the package root. Open the extracted folders until you reach the directory containing scenery data such as Earth nav data, objects or library.txt. Avoid leaving that directory inside an unnecessary outer wrapper folder.
  3. Copy the package. Place the complete package folder in X-Plane 12/Custom Scenery. Install required libraries as separate folders in the same location.
  4. Launch and close X-Plane. This updates scenery_packs.ini. X-Plane must be restarted after adding or changing scenery.
  5. Check scenery priority. Keep custom airports above conflicting airports, overlays above the orthophoto or mesh they accompany, and base mesh or orthophoto packages near the bottom.

Why does downloaded scenery not appear?

Missing scenery is usually caused by a nested folder, an absent library or incorrect priority in scenery_packs.ini.

  • Nothing changes at the airport: Confirm that you are at the correct ICAO location and that the custom airport sits above any competing version.
  • X-Plane reports missing objects: Install every library named by the package documentation. The simulator’s Log.txt usually identifies the missing resource or failed package.
  • The package is listed but ignored: Check that its line in scenery_packs.ini is not marked SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED.
  • Only an empty or flat area appears: Inspect the folder structure. A common mistake is creating Custom Scenery/Package/Package/Earth nav data instead of placing the inner package at the top level.
  • Terrain has changed unexpectedly: Disable duplicate mesh or orthophoto tiles and test one package at a time. Two base meshes cannot control the same tile simultaneously; the higher-priority package wins.

When diagnosing a large installation, temporarily disable all new packages and restore them one by one. That is faster and more reliable than repeatedly rearranging the entire scenery list.
