FSX & FSX: Steam Edition 5 min read

Why does FSX Gold installation fail, and how do I fix it?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix FSX Gold installation failures with the right Deluxe and Acceleration order, clean reinstall steps, DVD checks and error-specific repairs.

FSX Gold installation usually fails because the Deluxe base was not installed and started before Acceleration, old FSX files or installer records remain, Windows blocks the legacy setup, or the DVD cannot be read. Install each component in order, with administrator rights, after cleaning remnants and checking the media.

FSX Gold is the boxed package containing FSX Deluxe and the Acceleration expansion. FSX: Steam Edition uses a separate installation system; do not install Gold DVDs, boxed patches or Acceleration over the Steam edition.

How do I install FSX Gold in the correct order?

The reliable order is FSX Deluxe first, one successful test flight, and then Acceleration.

  1. Back up anything you need. Preserve third-party aircraft, scenery, saved flights and configuration files before removing an older installation.
  2. Remove a failed or partial installation properly. Uninstall Acceleration first, followed by Microsoft Flight Simulator X, using Windows' installed-apps controls. Restart Windows afterwards. Do not merely delete the FSX program folder, because that leaves installer records behind.
  3. Clear genuine leftovers. After uninstalling, rename any remaining FSX installation directory. If the first launch was also failing, rename %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX so FSX can build a fresh configuration. Renaming is safer than deleting because files can be restored later.
  4. Prepare the installer. Sign in with an administrator account, close other setup programs and right-click the first disc's setup.exe to run it as administrator. Leave compatibility mode off initially; forcing an old Windows compatibility mode can create different installer or activation problems.
  5. Install FSX Deluxe completely. Insert the second base disc only when prompted and allow bundled prerequisite installers to finish. Do not begin a separate installation from Disc 2.
  6. Start Deluxe before adding Acceleration. Launch FSX, complete activation if requested, reach the main screen, load a default flight and close the simulator normally. This confirms that the base files and registration data were created.
  7. Install Acceleration. Restart Windows, run the Acceleration setup as administrator, and use the product key supplied for that component where the package has separately labelled keys. Launch and activate FSX again before restoring any add-ons.

A dedicated installation folder outside Program Files can reduce later write-permission trouble with old add-ons, but changing folders will not repair damaged media or broken installer records.

Which FSX Gold error identifies the cause?

The stage and error code usually distinguish a DVD problem from an InstallShield, prerequisite or Acceleration failure.

Message or failure pointLikely causeBest next action
Error 1305 or 1335, usually naming a cabinet fileThe DVD, optical drive or copied installation data cannot be read reliablyClean and inspect the disc, test another drive, and follow our cabinet-file and media checks for Error 1335.
Error 1607 or 1628 before normal file copyingInstallShield did not initialise, another setup is active, or temporary installer data is damagedRestart Windows and use the legacy InstallShield repair sequence rather than repeatedly launching the DVD.
Error 1935 or an MSXML 4.0 messageA legacy XML or Windows assembly prerequisite is missing or damagedRepair that prerequisite using our MSXML 4 troubleshooting steps. Do not download individual DLL files from miscellaneous sources.
Acceleration says FSX is absent, rolls back or fails while the base simulator worksDeluxe did not complete its first run, its installer registration is damaged, or boxed and Steam files are being mixedConfirm that boxed Deluxe launches by itself, then use the Acceleration-specific repair procedure.
Setup completes but FSX will not startThe installation may be complete; the failure is now in first-run configuration, permissions, graphics components or an add-onTest a fresh FSX configuration without add-ons instead of reinstalling the DVDs immediately.

How can I tell whether the FSX Gold DVD is faulty?

A disc or drive fault is likely when installation always stops on the same named file or cabinet, especially if Windows cannot copy that file from the DVD to a temporary folder.

  • Clean the readable surface with a lint-free cloth, wiping from the centre outwards rather than in circles.
  • Try a different optical drive if one is available; ageing drives can read ordinary files while failing on large cabinet archives.
  • Use a normal file copy as a read test, but keep each disc's contents separate. Combining both base discs into one folder can overwrite files or break the installer's disc checks.
  • If the same file remains unreadable in another drive, Windows settings and compatibility modes will not repair the media.

If setup fails before it begins copying FSX files, concentrate on InstallShield, temporary folders, permissions and prerequisite components instead of the DVD surface.

Does FSX Gold need Service Pack 1 or 2 installed separately?

A normal FSX Gold installation does not need standalone Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 between Deluxe and Acceleration.

Acceleration applies the update level required by the Gold package. Standalone service packs are intended for boxed installations that will not use Acceleration; adding them unnecessarily can complicate diagnosis. FSX: Steam Edition must likewise use its own Steam-managed files rather than boxed service-pack installers.

What mistakes cause repeated FSX Gold installation failures?

Repeated failures often come from retrying without correcting the original installation state.

  • Installing Acceleration before Deluxe has launched successfully.
  • Deleting the FSX folder without uninstalling the registered products first.
  • Mixing boxed Gold files with FSX: Steam Edition.
  • Restoring aircraft, scenery or an old fsx.cfg before confirming that a clean installation runs.
  • Disabling security software or changing compatibility settings without evidence that either is blocking setup.
  • Treating an activation rejection as an installation failure; activation occurs after setup and requires the key belonging to the installed component.

Record the exact error code, named file and installation stage before another attempt. Those three details determine whether to repair Windows' installer components, clean the old installation, address Acceleration separately or replace unreadable media.
