To fly over a US national park in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, open Free Flight, search for the park or a nearby airport, create a short VFR route across the park, and track it on the EFB moving map. Choose a slow aircraft, daylight, clear weather and enough altitude for the terrain.
How do I find a national park on the MSFS 2024 map?
The most dependable method is to search for a nearby airport and then add the park or its main landmark as a waypoint. Park-name results and points of interest vary, and MSFS 2024 does not draw every national park boundary on the globe.
- Open Free Flight and search for the park's full name. If a point of interest appears, select it and check where the marker actually sits; it may represent a visitor centre or label rather than the best viewpoint.
- Search for a nearby airport by name or ICAO identifier if the park produces no useful result. Set that airport as the departure rather than treating the park marker as an airport.
- Add one or more custom waypoints over the feature you want to see, such as a canyon rim, lake, mountain or coastline. A large park may need several waypoints rather than one marker at its geographical centre.

- Track the aircraft on the EFB after loading the flight. The moving map is often more useful than cockpit GPS for an informal sightseeing circuit; see our EFB map and aircraft-position instructions if the map is hidden.
Do not rely on a visible border to tell you when you have entered the park. Use recognisable terrain, roads, rivers, lakes and named landmarks to confirm your position.
Which airports are good starting points for national park flights?
Choose an airport close enough to keep the flight short but far enough away to give you time to climb above surrounding terrain.

How should I set up a national park sightseeing flight?
A high-wing piston aircraft such as a Cessna 172 is the easiest choice because it is slow, stable and leaves the ground visible beneath the wings. A bush aircraft suits short strips and mountain areas, while a helicopter is useful for close observation but requires more work and fuel management.
- Weather: Use good visibility and a cloud base above every planned ridge. Live weather can hide the entire attraction behind cloud, smoke, haze or snow.
- Time: Morning or late-afternoon light reveals terrain shape well, but avoid placing the low sun directly ahead of the aircraft.
- Altitude: Plan from terrain elevation, not sea level. If a ridge is at 7,000 feet MSL, flying at an indicated 2,000 feet would put the aircraft inside the ground; roughly 9,000 feet MSL would provide 2,000 feet of clearance.
- Speed: Around 80–110 knots works well in common light aircraft. Fast jets and airliners cover the viewing area before streamed scenery has time to resolve fully.
- Route length: A 20–60 nautical mile circuit is usually more manageable than trying to cross an entire park in one flight.
Why is the EFB route missing from the cockpit GPS?
The EFB and the aircraft's avionics can hold separate flight plans. Transfer the route to the avionics where that aircraft supports it, then verify the waypoints and active leg before take-off. Autopilot NAV mode will not follow a route merely displayed on the EFB, but you can still follow that line visually.
Can I fly low over a national park?
MSFS 2024 will usually let you fly wherever the virtual aircraft can physically go, but it does not comprehensively enforce every real-world restriction. For realistic flying, maintain a generous terrain margin and treat 2,000 feet above the surface as the normal minimum over noise-sensitive national park areas where practical.
That 2,000-foot figure is a real-world operating recommendation, not a blanket rule making all lower flight illegal. Some locations have specific restrictions: the Grand Canyon has a Special Flight Rules Area with flight-free zones, corridors and prescribed altitudes. The absence of an in-sim warning does not mean the same route would be legal in a real aircraft.
Why does a national park look blurry or generic?
Most remote parks use streamed aerial imagery, terrain mesh and generated vegetation rather than city-style photogrammetry. A poor connection, incomplete streaming or insufficient terrain detail can therefore produce soft textures, delayed trees and indistinct rock formations.
- Confirm that online world-data streaming is enabled and not being restricted by the connection.
- Give the area time to load before making a fast, low pass.
- Use clear weather to rule out haze, cloud shadows and snow cover.
- Expect airport scenery packages to improve their stated coverage area, not reconstruct an entire national park.
