Can you use a joystick with MSFS 2024 on GeForce NOW? Learn why flight sticks are not detected, what inputs work and the practical alternative.
No, not as a native flight controller. GeForce NOW does not pass a joystick, yoke or HOTAS through to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Although MSFS 2024 supports them on a local installation, its cloud session normally receives only GeForce NOW-supported gamepads, keyboard and mouse. An Xbox-style gamepad is the dependable choice.
Why does GeForce NOW not detect the joystick?
GeForce NOW forwards the input types supported by its streaming client, but it does not expose a standard DirectInput joystick as raw hardware inside the cloud PC. MSFS 2024 therefore has no device to recognise or bind.
The joystick may work perfectly in Windows and still be absent from the simulator's Controls settings after streaming starts. Reinstalling drivers, adjusting sensitivity or calibrating it will not fix an input device that never reaches the cloud session. Changing between the browser and desktop client does not normally add joystick passthrough either.
This distinction catches many simmers out: a controller can be fully supported by a local installation but unavailable through a streaming service. Our guide to choosing controllers for local and cloud-based MSFS 2024 explains the compatibility differences.
How can I check whether my joystick is being passed through?
The decisive test is whether a joystick or gamepad device appears in MSFS 2024's Controls settings during the GeForce NOW session.
- Check for a gamepad mode: if the joystick has a hardware XInput or gamepad mode, select it before opening GeForce NOW. Most conventional flight sticks do not offer this.
- Restart the streaming session: connect the device before launching the game so the client has an opportunity to detect it.
- Open the Controls settings: look for a device tile corresponding to the controller. A generic gamepad may appear, but a normal joystick or HOTAS usually will not.
- Test every axis and button: even when gamepad mode works, separate throttle, rudder and additional axes may be missing or combined.
If the device is absent there, no MSFS binding change can make it work. The limitation sits between the local hardware and GeForce NOW, not inside the simulator.
Can joystick-to-gamepad remapping make it work?
Remapping can sometimes present a joystick to GeForce NOW as a virtual XInput gamepad, but this is an unsupported workaround rather than native joystick support.
- The stick may be reduced to the gamepad's two analogue sticks and triggers.
- A separate throttle, rudder pedals and extra control panels may not be available.
- Button combinations, centre positions and sensitivity can behave differently from native joystick axes.
- Force feedback and device-specific features will not be passed through as normal flight-control functions.
A flight stick with a built-in gamepad mode has a better chance than one relying on local remapping software. Even then, MSFS 2024 sees a gamepad rather than the real joystick, so we would not buy flight hardware specifically for this arrangement.
Which controls work best with MSFS 2024 on GeForce NOW?
A supported Xbox-style gamepad is the best choice for flying MSFS 2024 through GeForce NOW, with keyboard and mouse used for cockpit interaction where the client supports them.
| Input | Expected GeForce NOW result | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Supported gamepad | Forwarded as a game controller | Primary flight controls and camera movement |
| Keyboard and mouse | Supported on compatible clients | Cockpit switches, menus and shortcuts |
| Joystick, yoke or HOTAS | Normally not exposed to the cloud session | Local MSFS installation |
| Virtual gamepad remapping | May work with reduced functionality | Experimental fallback only |
If cloud streaming is essential, our joystick-versus-gamepad buying guidance explains why a conventional gamepad is the safer purchase.
How do I get full joystick and HOTAS support?
Run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 locally on a Windows PC to give the simulator direct access to the joystick, throttle and rudder axes. Once Windows and MSFS recognise the hardware, follow our MSFS joystick binding and profile steps to assign the flight controls.
Choose local installation when separate throttle and rudder axes, extensive button bindings or several flight peripherals matter. Choose GeForce NOW with a supported gamepad when avoiding local hardware requirements matters more than using a full cockpit-control setup.
